Intolerable Cruelty Reviews
Adult romantic comedy is awesome i recommend it
It's got its quirky moments but it's by far not as rough around the edges as other films by the Coen brothers. It's like this film has been washed with some kind of fabric softener. Still a decent watch though.
Absurdly funny courtroom scenes. Billy Bob Thornton was over the top.
The idea of this movie is really good and some moments really made me laugh, but the as a whole... it is a MESS. I can't give it over 50% no matter how much others tell me that it is worth it.
I can't get enough of this movie. Highly underrated.
Along with "The Labykillers" which followed this movie, the Coen's managed to make two of their worst movies back to back. The jokes are thin, the characters unlikable, just a really disappointing effort.
Slapstick comedy which made all of characters over act.
Edit: I gave this movie a half star because negative stars were unavailable. Water boarding, electrocution, bamboo shoots under the fingernails, and Intolerable Cruelty. All of these acts have been condemned by humanitarians in first world countries. This movie is completely UNWATCHABLE. I can't really put my finger on it. Was it the goofy direction? The implausible dialogue? The wooden acting? The apathetic editing? Take your pick. Intolerable Cruelty is intolerably cruel to have to sit through to the ending. I got up about half way in, turned around to my seat mates in the audience, and called them all fools for staying any longer. I then yelled "Fire" at the top of my lungs.
This film is quite predictable in one way but its also quite witty in another - the two main characters (played by George Clooney and Catherine Zeta-Jones) are certainly devious and clever in their own way but things, shall I say, don't always work out (you'll have to watch the film to find out more). I liked that it featured what I felt was a good 'meeting of minds' if you will - the scenes with the two characters flirting made for good cinema, in terms of the one upmanship. This being a Cohen brothers film, its reasonably stylish in a visual way, the colour/lighting is mostly in yellow, for one thing. There were some quirky characters - I'm not sure why one of the people in a Las Vegas scene is clearly Scottish, although given Clooney wears a kilt in said scenes, I assume there's reason for it. Also I liked Billy Bob Thorntons character. There were some quite amusing scenes, when things turn a bit pear shaped - I enjoyed those and I also liked the madcap dream scenes. Its definitely a quirky watch but a quite entertaining one. I suppose aspects of the plot could be thought of as a bit cliched but I felt that, overall, it was a well made film, so I'd recommend it.
Clever dialogue, plenty of laugh out loud moments, great chemistry between Clooney/Jones, plot twists, and awesome acting. This movie delivers for those who like thought provoking scripts. If you're an action/adventure meathead w low intellect, yes you'll be bored.
Enjoyed that a lot! :)
The Coen brothers, over the years, have clearly set the bar high for their films. When they release something that is generally decent but not up to their established standards, it is usually either ignored or judged a failure. Such is the case with Intolerable Cruelty, an attempt to pay homage to the screwball comedies of the 1930's. George Clooney and Catherine Zeta-Jones establish a reasonable rapport as they face off against each other and Cedric the Entertainer generates some laughs in his small role. The film veers off course when it starts edging towards slapstick, but much of the dialogue elsewhere is witty and Clooney is able to turn on the Clooney charm when called for.
Hilarious ! I practically fell out of my chair when they said " Objection your honor--Strangling the witness."
Light Coen Bros. film that doesn’t come to life until the final act.
The actors have no chemistry and the story is surprisingly unpleasant.
