INU-OH Reviews

This is maybe the finest work Yuasa Masaaki has done in the last decade, and it has so much of animation's ability to produce a cinematic breeze of fresh air. I love it unreservedly and hope to be able to revisit it many, many times.

| Original Score: 4.5/5 | Mar 10, 2023

If this is where Yuasa intends to leave us for a while, he's done so with the best possible reminder of what a remarkable talent he takes with him.

| Original Score: 4.5/5 | Feb 27, 2023

The Noh of the 14th century meets the rock of the 1970s in this unusual anime offering.

| Original Score: 2.5/4 | Feb 5, 2023

Director Masaaki Yuasa deliberately indulges in jarring imagery, refusing to wrestle the plot into coherent sense, especially as it spirals into a surreal rock-n-roll musical. What emerges is an intriguing exploration of storytelling.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Jan 9, 2023

Inu-Oh is an innovative reworking of a Japanese folk tale, with this anime movie making social commentary about what happens when two musicians from the 1300s give their own retelling of folk tales and suffer the consequences for it.

Inu-Oh is one of the most satisfying animated experiences of 2022 and should be mandatory viewing for any fan of the medium.

| Original Score: 9/10 | Dec 20, 2022

Yuasa and his team have made another excellent and entertaining experience, and I can’t wait to see what they do next.

| Original Score: 8.5/10 | Nov 30, 2022

Masaaki Yuasa’s latest anime feature embodies a revolutionary spirit in its tale of outcasts breaking ground in medieval Japan.

| Nov 14, 2022

A unique retelling of a forgotten age of Japanese culture and history, that blends classical and modern elements seamlessly and is captivating viewing.

| Original Score: 4/5 | Sep 28, 2022

A rollicking good time!

| Original Score: 4/5 | Sep 27, 2022

An affirmation of lost histories and outcast perspectives that screams with a protean power.

| Original Score: 4/5 | Sep 27, 2022

A visually arresting rock opera which tackles a traditional story in an unusual way

| Sep 27, 2022

While a simple story set against a historical backdrop, Inu-Oh feels much closer to the Baz Lurhmann end of the spectrum than it does to faithful retelling of events.

Masaaki Yuasa’s latest effectively harnesses the power of rock to demonstrate the importance of storytelling in maintaining history.

Overall, you may never be swept away by an animation and feel like you’re at a concert in any other film this year.

| Aug 13, 2022

It feels like the sort of film [Akira] Kurosawa would have made had he worked in animation.

| Aug 12, 2022

An unusual film, an interesting film... But not your every animated feature or even your standard anime feature.

| Aug 12, 2022

Basically, “Inu-oh” is to Noh as spray-painted graffiti is to traditional Japanese calligraphy.

| Aug 12, 2022

While never short on creativity, the plot points and storytelling rhythms are hard to fathom at times since there's more than enough to keep you busy between the visual wonders and loud head-banging music with its storytelling lyrics.

| Original Score: B+ | Aug 12, 2022

A psychedelic, bombastic rock opera.
