Invictus Reviews
Great historical insights but could've been more concise.
A lame sports movie that attempts using historical pretense to disguise itself something more compelling.
I wanted to like it but got highly annoyed and bored with Harry's center stage drama that insulted the true heros, Please consider someone who won't detract to host the Invictus Games so we can focus on what's important and not worry that we are giving more money to the grifters.
It was offensive that the wounded veterans weren't the sole stars... Harry, again, took the opportunity to whine and whimper . How weak and attention-seeking can one spoiled little dimwitted prince be? Everyone knows that Invictus was created in part by Harry's handlers to help reshaped his wayward image. But using disabled vets as a marketing tool to fix his dumpster-fire "brand" after all that he's done to damage his country is just sick.
A plodding, bland telling of what is an amazing true story. The politics of sport is told in such a dull manner, that what is supposed to be an uplifting ending falls remarkably flat.
I have not finished watching it by the time of writing this, But I like some parts of it. The question is: What would happen if the president banished the team and its flag from the beginning
This is an uplifting film, with a good cast. I was interested in the historical aspect rather than the sports side of it and I wasn't aware of the story beforehand, so it was an interesting watch. I thought Morgan Freeman did well portraying Mandela and so did Matt Damon as the team captain. I liked the tone of this film and as I say I thought it was at least somewhat uplifting, so I'd recommend it on that basis.
I really enjoyed this film. As someone born in South Africa, I was impressed with A-List American actors perfectly hitting their South African accents. Morgan Freeman however gives a weak performance in parts and struggled with achieving Mandela's mannerisms and accent. In some parts he nails the role. There just isn't consistency with his performance. The story accurately captures racial tension at the time without any attempt to re-write history. Some parts are painful to watch and will upset.
I love this movie, its very iconic. I love how accurate particular scenes during the Rugby World Cup, also I do like you can watch the movie but you don't have to be a Rugby supporter to watch the movie. Furthermore its just beautiful to see a country united between groups of people through sport and the effect of sport can be on the population. Morgan Freeman performed very well as Nelson Mandela and Matt Damon as the captain of the Rugby team and all the other cast members.
A little bit hit-and-miss, though 'Invictus' still manages to produce the requirements for a solid sports drama. Morgan Freeman and Matt Damon are two actors I enjoy a lot, but by the end of this 2009 film I was a tad underwhelmed by them. Freeman as Nelson Mandela sounds great on paper, but in reality you kinda lose what makes Freeman so great - his voice, given he has to act with a South African accent. He still does a good job nevertheless, I just don't think I'll remember this particular portrayal of Mandela - unlike Idris Elba's attempt in 2013's 'Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom'. The merging of the two plot points - politics and rugby union - is done well, though the former is easily more interesting than the latter... and I say that as someone who loves sport and dislikes politics! It's one that is worth a watch, it just didn't give me anything to remember.
Rugby meets politics in this enjoyable movie.
While it features an inspirational story for the ages, a Rugby game that helped to unite a divided nation, and contains a host of talented performers, Invictus never feels more than just a good film. Clint Eastwood has helmed plenty of great movies, but here it feels like he's on autopilot mode. Everything, from the story structure to the character development to the inevitable happy ending feel so workmanlike that I found very little of it to be in any way emotionally affecting. Freeman makes an unsurprisingly fantastic Mandela, running the country in as democratic a way as possible and meeting resistance at every turn, and Matt Damon gives a gutsy performance as the captain of the Springboks, whose victory on the big stage is the event that could potentially bring the people of his country together at last. The problem is, while the film aims for inspiration, its big trailer moments sometimes make little sense. For example, during the final minutes of the World Cup final, Damon gives a speech to his team in which he emphasises ‘Defence, defence defence.' But the scores are tied, so his team wouldn't win if they went with that strategy. The element I found most interesting was Mandela's head of security, Tony. He's a man with an unwavering dedication to his job and his boss, and the introduction of white people into his staff threatens the security and stability of his position. You can see how constantly conflicted he is, and it makes him easily the most complex performance. Overall, Invictus is an inspiring story, told with little flair or intrigue, and never ends up feeling like the ground breaker it should be. Not a bad film, but not a great one either.
Invictus is a good movie that captures the spirit of Nelson Mandela beautifully. I have always loved Clint Eastwood as a director and I think he and Morgan Freeman does an excellent job at conveying what an incredibly intelligent man Madiba was and what he stood for. Technically though, the movie isn't anything special and it lacks the finesse of beautiful cinematography and design. Also, the rugby games represented in the movie are unclear and lacks the excitement that's needed to make this movie truly great. As a South African myself, I would have also liked it if they had more original South African languages the movie. Personally, I think hearing Americans speak only English with a bad foreign accent always takes away from a movie. Other than that, it's a good story that I would recommend to everyone.
Invictus is a historical picture based on Nelson Mandela and the 1995 South African rugby team. I think the movie does a decent job of representing the issues in South Africa at the time and also telling the story in a respectful way. Morgan freeman and Matt Damon's accents are pretty decent for my unaccustomed American ears but native South Africans may disagree. There was definitely some overuse of slow motion in the climax scenes, it was almost like someone hit the slow-mo button and forgot to turn it off. I think it was supposed to make it more intense but it instead made it feel super artificial and in my opinion kind of ruined those scenes, it was so bad I actually started laughing at one point because it was a solid minute of slow motion grunting. That and a few scenes that definitely did not need to be in the movie were my only real gripes with it. Other than that I really enjoyed it and would say it was a decent watch.
A wonderful and inspiring film about the early days of Nelson Mandela's early days as president of South Africa. Morgan Freeman and Matt Damon inhabit their characters. This is a wonderful film!
A really good sports film with Morgan Freeman and Matt Damon doing superb jobs and having a unique direction from Clint Eastwood.
A really interesting film about one of the greatest men who ever lived: Nelson Mandela. Unfortunately, the script focuses on Rugby, only brushing over the miracle of a man so Great that he was able to forgive those who illegally held him in jail for 30 years.
