Irresistible Reviews
It's plain all along that Stewart has little interest in his characters and their troubles except as a means for him to score didactic points, primarily about the evils of unrestricted campaign financing.

I don't think it works well as a drama or a comedy. It's not especially funny... There's a good message here, but it's buried under a lot of stuff that doesn't work.

In desperate need of ruthless incisiveness, it goes soft at every turn.

Jon Stewart can't actually be bothered to show us any diversity throughout Irresistible, and it's a failing of the film that shows his own ideological narrowness.

Irresistible is hugely diverting and sporadically profound. At the very end, though, it takes the path of least resistance and - dagnammit! - lets everyone off the hook.

The final impression is of a thesis only partially expanded into satisfactory dramedy.

As a non-partisan response to the craziness of "this system, the way we elect people" (which is indeed "terrifying and exhausting"), it gets my vote.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Jun 28, 2020
"Irresistible" is a shell game that wants to entertain us until it's time to make us think, but it doesn't say anything we don't already know...
| Original Score: 2.5/4 | Jun 27, 2020
Not good.
| Original Score: 2/5 | Jun 27, 2020
"Irresistible," which can't decide if it's a satire, a farce or an old-fashioned come-from-behind underdog story, just isn't it. Resist.
| Original Score: C- | Jun 27, 2020
Irresistible is exactly what it accuses everyone else of being - haplessly, groundlessly condescending.
| Original Score: 1.5/5 | Jun 26, 2020
As things close, we realize we never once really learned, well, what people believe and want in this town - besides simply loving it.
| Original Score: 2.5/4 | Jun 26, 2020
It's nothing The Daily Show, under Stewart's leadership, didn't already cover. Which is a little alarming in 2020.
| Jun 26, 2020
Irresistible is a giant mess that rarely entertains, Stewart's whimsical pontifications sadly falling on deaf ears.
| Original Score: 1.5/4 | Jun 26, 2020
It's a big old nothingburger of a movie: Wag the Dog with a muzzle on.
| Original Score: 2/5 | Jun 26, 2020
The movie can't help tuning out the voices of the very people whose cause it seeks to espouse.
| Jun 26, 2020
Stewart makes the same mistake his characters do; he condescends to his audience.
| Original Score: B | Jun 26, 2020
The whole point of the film, if I'm following it correctly, is that money in politics is bad and that our Red State/Blue State narrative is driven by the press and political strategists and serves to divide us further. Whoa... mind blown.
| Original Score: 1.5/4 | Jun 26, 2020
Mr. Stewart is nobody's bumpkin when it comes to dumb stereotypes. Still, the scheme of his script requires them, and they aren't all that amusing, even in retrospect.
| Jun 25, 2020
For nearly its entire length, the movie comes off as condescending, particularly about small towns.
