Ishtar Reviews
I don't care what ANYONE says! Ishtar is a brilliant comedy and a movie for the ages!! Been watching since I was a kid and the subtle nuances have been hitting ever since! AMAZING
This is far from the worst film ever made, but it's certainly not good. You know things are really bad when you catch yourself thinking, "this is no Spies Like Us."
Ishtar is one of the most underrated movies of all time. Dustin Hoffman and Warren Beatty are brilliant as a hopelessly hapless singer/song writing duo who take up residency as lounge singers at a hotel in Morocco after their lives fall apart in New York. They soon get sucked into international intrigue and become pawns on separate sides of a power struggle between the CIA and a rebel group trying to take down the emir of the fictional country of Ishtar. I think critics decided they hated the movie before it even came out due to its well publicized budget and schedule overruns and audiences never gave it a chance. Like The Big Lebowski, it was misunderstood and under appreciated in its time, and like The Big Lebowski it has undergone a significant critical reevaluation in recent years. Martin Scorcese has even cited it as one of his favorite movies and Quentin Tarantino is also a big fan.
It's not the worst movie ever made, as it's reputation suggests. It's just a lame, pretty worthless, pretty meh regurgitation of Bob Hope and Bing Crosby "Road to Rio" movies of the 40s. Not recommended
If you've ever tried to be creative this movie will hit home in a big way. It isn't a "classic" but it does pull off some nifty tricks. I think my favorite is Warren Beatty presented as a big oaf, and Dustin Hoffman as a suave ladies man. The songs go into the "so bad they are good" category. They are perfect for two song writers who don't realize how bad they are. Dustin Hoffman even thinks they are in the same league as Simon and Garfunkel. If you simply take it for what it is, "road picture" style comedy, it is very good. There are scenes that are very funny. People's chief complaint seems to center around how much it cost to make. I don't know about you but I don't use a film's budget to determine whether or not I like it. It is worth watching if you can keep an open mind and look for the gems.
Gross, gross, did I mention gross. NRJ.
Of all the films of 1987 this was technically one of them, I am almost sure of it.
Warren Beatty and Dustin Hoffman are doing ridiculous from the very beginning, and this caused me difficult to watch til the end. This is one of the famously low rated films in Hollywood. So my expectation was so low and my mid was biased. Bad to be bad.
"Two schmucks in the desert." You've gotta be the blind camel to watch it, just feeling the flow of comedy wrapping around your heart. Amuse yourself, believe in what you do, be on that tiny scene, be ridiculous, sing it out loud, there's no age to do that! Hoffman and Beatty having a ball together, that's irresistible my friends!
It's a spoof. It isn't perfect but lower your expectations and give it a chance. I found it quite funny and at times hilarious.
I really, really enjoyed it. I learned about it because Jonathan Crombie (Anne of Green Gables series, Broadway's The Drowsy Chaperone) and his friend John Mitchell made a documentary about it a year or so before JC died. the only part I did not like was when Dustin Hoffman pretended to speak Arabic.
The Director's Cut version is recommended so one can get the full scope of ludicrous plot and unlikable characters in a movie seemingly shot in single takes. Everyone tries so hard despite the incoherence
I think the reviews have been hard on this movie. I laughed through it entirely. You have to have a zany sense of humor I grant you but if you do you will watch it again and again. I felt very lonely when I saw how poorly this movie was received:(
The single reason this is so terrible is that Warren Beatty and Dustin Hoffman are totally miscast. Overplaying their roles as incompetent and talentless musicians they succeed in finding literally no laughs in any of the situations into which writer-director Elaine May shoehorns them. Even proven comic talents like Charles Grodin and Jack Weston count for nothing. How did this legendary fiasco ever get released? There is a microscopic fascination in observing so many elements misfire, but that's it.
I love this movie. If you liked it's a mad, mad, mad world or Midnight Run, you'll like this. It's an idiotic premise played straight by the stars of the day. The production quality is top notch. Charles Grodin is hilarious as the CIA station chief. It got scathing reviews. I don't get it. It's like I watched a different movie.
This is the perfect thanksgiving movie. Thoroughly enjoyed watching this while drinking a whole Heineken mini keg. Bad movie worth a watch for being so bad. These men are pawns
If you personally know anyone who THINKS they write masterpieces but ACTUALLY write nonsensical garbage, this movie was made for you. It's hilarious. Don't take it seriously and you'll enjoy it.
A vastly underrated movie, undermined by irrelevant pre-release reception. It didn't seem to accord with its huge budget but it's a sly, subtle and often hilarious film.
