It's Kind of a Funny Story Reviews
Situating an optimistic comedy in an insane asylum was, from the start, a crazy idea. [Full review in Spanish]

Nonetheless, in black comedy style, the film sweetly tackles a serious subject matter.

Features an exceptional cast, a sensible blend of dark humor with dramatic overtones, and the inclusion of several creative fantasy sequences.

In truth, it's probably the kind of material better handled in a three-minute emo song than an entire film where its navel-gazing sensitivity is inflated to ridiculously enormous proportions.

Galifianakis proves himself as an actor here, and Gilchrist and Roberts will surely be going places. It is a feel-good movie despite the subject matter.

The wry observational drama, hinting at darker forces that never fully surface, may offer a more realistic portrayal of life in a psych ward that the usual Hollywood version. But the film plays it too safe...

An uneven film, and its earnestness is a bit stretched, but its characters are mostly oddly endearing.
| Original Score: 2.5/4 | Jun 7, 2019
Despite some good work from Zach Galifianakis and strong individual moments, "Story" never quite clicks - mainly because it tries too hard to be an indie darling.

Galifianakis [is] able to turn on a dime; balancing his disarming humour with moments of anguished outbreaks. His is one of the best supporting performances of recent memory; equally funny and heartbreaking. If only I could say the same of the movie.
| Original Score: 2.5/5 | Aug 15, 2011
For all its problems, though, the film is easy-going, frequently channels into a sweet-natured tone and is able to raise a few chuckles.

It may not be One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, but it's also not Patch Adams.
| Original Score: 2/5 | Apr 4, 2011
...runs out of steam about half way through but with a likable cast and an interesting setup you'll want to finish what you started.

It's also a kind of two-dimensional romance, a kind of flippant look at life on a mental ward, and (...) kind of made me want to give Zach Galifianakis a hug.

It's Kind of a Funny Story lacks substance, but after you've spent a short time in this ward, you have to agree with Craig: These crazies aren't so bad.
| Original Score: 2.5/4 | Jan 31, 2011
The film's central element -- its sensitive exploration of a young teen's emotional confusion -- creates strong audience empathy, however, and gives Fleck and Boden a fertile focus for their signature light-hearted humanist storytelling.

Wavering between affecting dramedy and goofy asylum- com, this is an enjoyable but superficial placebo that soft-soaps the realities of psychological disorder.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Jan 26, 2011
[A] flimsy, box-ticking quirk fest.
| Original Score: 2/5 | Jan 18, 2011
As a self-help sitcom, it feels both glib and icky. Glicky?
