Jack Brooks: Monster Slayer Reviews

Sep 16, 2024

Jack Brooks: Monster Slayer. Need I say more? Oh, okay then. Really, if the title doesn't give you a clue to what sort of movie you're about to watch then I really can't add that much. It's a cheesy, low budget B-movie (or maybe even C-movie) about a loser who had his family killed by a monster. Now, he's a plumber by day and a student at night. Plus he has anger issues. Guess what - he's destined to fight monsters. And that's about it. But is it any good? Well, Robert `original Freddy Kruger' Englund is in it, so that does mean it's not going to be completely awful and the former spiky-fingered one does overact nicely. As for the rest of it, well, it's okay. The first three quarters of the film don't contain many monsters. Which is a shame, based on its title. However, if you enjoy where it's going, you'll be rewarded with a suitably decent pay-off. This comes in the form a nice slice `n dice battle in the college with monsters splattering all over the place. Overall, it's fun - especially for the ending. I just wish they could have put the ending in the middle and then added more of the same.

I really liked this movie Robert Englund was a good man who didn't deserve what happened to him. Jack Brooks was also a very tragic character who I actually really liked. The scene of his family's death was actually very effective and the practical effects of this movie was just fantastic. Some acting was meh and some jokes fell flat but I actually really, really enjoyed this movie.

A must see monster movie. Honestly, this movie is in my top 5 favorite movies of all time.

Even though some of the monster effects are a bit cheesy at times, that's kinda the point. This is a horror-comedy. And in that respect this film is an absolute treasure and deserves more of a cult-following than people have given it. I love this film and even own it on Blu-ray. Robert Englund is a blast in this and it's a tight story for a B-list horror movie. The creatures are never scary, but they can get a chuckle and can be creepy as well. This has one of the best uses(in my opinion) of Bobby Darrin's Beyond The Sea. It's funny as the background music to Jack's family being killed and is used later to help push him back into saving his classmates. Jack is an interesting character and I love his transformation in the film. Even though this film is not for everyone, if you're into some B-movie horror films(Like the original Evil Dead Trilogy, etc.) I think you'll absolutely love this movie.

Fair-to-middling horror comedy tries hard but doesn't always succeed; Robert Englund hams it up as the main monster.

Awesome! Loved the old schoolness. Who needs cgi?!

Entertaining, but it seemed like all the action takes place when the film is already over. It is a fun movie, but Matthews doesn't seem like the realistic underdog or a god among men in his leading role

Robert Englund is and forever will be better known as Freddy Krueger, one of the genres most iconic and revered characters. But since then his appearances are nothing but disasters, his name alone enough to turn fans off. This is his best performance since the glory days in Elm Street and by far the best part of this overeager horror comedy. He plays a possessed science teacher and his enthusiasm is nothing short of infectious. The rest of the cast is lukewarm at best, clumsy at its worst. Most attempts at comedy fail with just a few lines and a minor character (Howard, the hardware shop man) surviving the over-enthusiastic directors. There's not scares whatsoever, just some blood and some bad special effects. Fun and inessential. Better is the low-budget 15-minute short 'Teen Massacre' to be found on the disc as bonus. If nothing else, it's earnest and has plenty of gore.

Besides a good performance from Robert "Kruger" Englund, the movie is mostly a dud.

The first two acts have severe problems, but the third act is just action packed enough to work. The main character is incredibly unlikable, but Robert Englund is great in a different kind of villain role. If you can't stand the first 60 minutes, fast forward to the finale.

Not the best (far away, although it's really good), but maybe the funniest horror movie of history. I laughed so much so many times... :D Really better than I thought!

A great final act that's a real blast, filled with OTT gore and gooey FX, and sharp wit. But did I really have to sit through so much rambling uninteresting crap (aside from scenes with Robert Englund) to get there?

If you liked Killer Klowns From Outer Space I highly recommend watching this movie.

Like the good old days of popcorn and horror--The Black Heart Beats Again!!

the movie would've been nice if not for the tacky production design and prosthetics. in addition to the fact that the characters lacked depth and are not fully developed. in short a waste of time.

The make-up and monster FX are completely amazing featuring NO CG at all (and if there was it was so minute I couldn't tell). The production design, score etc are all above par but the problem lies in its pacing. After a solid first 20 minutes it sloooows...way...down and doesn't pick back up again until the last 20 or so. Still it's better than most and both director Knautz and the FX team should be sought after because they show alot of promise and skill.

A sincere but sometimes-excessive send up of low-rent horror hokum, Jack Brooks: Monster Slayer features some sharp laughs and features a scene-stealing performance by Robert Englund.
