Jeanne du Barry Reviews

Apr 13, 2025

Yes, the movie is quite dull, but I really view it more as a missed opportunity. The film does not depict du Barry's travails during the French Revolution. Instead, we get a few seconds of a voice over acknowledging her execution at the very end of the film. (And not very accurately either. Contemporaneous accounts indicate she went to the guillotine crying and screaming, not stoically as the voice over implies). The fact a revolution extolling the common man would execute one of their own for no other reason than sleeping with the enemy more than a decade earlier is much more interesting than the romance itself. Sure, depict that relationship, then move on to more interesting things. On the plus side, the costumes and sets were magnificent. You really get a feel for 18th century Versailles.

I bawled my eyes out. I loved it so much.

Great film. I prefer these more down to earth intimate portrayals of historical figures rather than flamboyant big budget productions that lack heart. This is a French historical film that Ridley Scott’s Napoleon should have aspired to.

The film is ruined by the main actress. She is 48 and looks 48, which is not remotely the age of Jeanne when she became Louis' favorite. Jeanne is supposed to be sexy, rose and plump. This one is bony, dried up and terribly modern looking. She cannpt close her mouth because of the overbite. The rest of the casting is fine. But this actress, twice the age of the protagonist, ruins the film. Darn it. Must have slept with the director.

Oof definitely a vehicle for Maiwenn's ego trip; the costumes and sets were spectacular but the story and acting were lacking. I love period pieces, but Amadeus and Farinelli have much better pacing, acting and character development, even if Farinelli is admittedly far more garish.

It was a beautiful movie. The acting was superb. The story. One that needed to be told. I had to watch in subtitles which never bothers me. Beautifully written, directed and the actors emotion was a treat. I am so glad I got to finally see this film.

I was so looking forward to this film. I love historic drama and fiction. But after watching this self-centered attempt by lead actress/Director "Maiwenn" I'm totally nauseated. It could have been SO good. This film is an example of how history gets all mixed-up when not told accurately. The facts are well documented. Poetic license is always accepted when it comes to details, but not monumental facts. It should have been billed as " Based on a True Story", but even that doesn't excuse the multitude of inaccuracies portrayed. First, I was constantly distracted by Maiwenn. Her acting was barely passable, she was completely mis-cast and the directing was uninspired and cliche'. As someone who has deeply researched Du Barry and seen her portraits I know one of her most attractive attributes was her youth and innocent appearance coupled with great intelligence and wit. She was a natural blonde with blue eyes. Her countenance angelic. The contrast of her also being an intellectual, artistic Courtesan was what made her so attractive. The producers chose, instead, an actress who in appearance looks like a born seductress. Most of the time Maiwenn looks like she's a horse who's been ridden hard and put away sweaty. The real Jeanne du Barry was elegant and classic. Born to be a King's mistress. Maiwenn would be better cast ruling from the deck of a pirate ship. It was a period in time when royal courtesans were held in high regard. ..even by some wives. The scene where the king stops and first lays eyes on her is so contrived. For ANYONE besides the queen to look directly at the king without being addressed would have been seriously punishable. The REAL Jeanne DB caught the Kings's eye due to her outrageous style and beauty. She would have NEVER been caught dead in a peasant dress EVER, especially not Versailles Palace. She had complete access to fantastic gowns and de rigueur wigs due to her employment in a fashion house. No woman in her right mind would have shown her face at Versailles not wearing a gown and fashionable wig. Think Marie Antoinette who lived there at the time too. The Queen died prior to du Barry. The King courted Jeanne as she courted him. He didn't pluck her off the streets. She was already well versed in court etiquette. And to this day a king bows to no one. So many historical inaccuracies in a time when these realities and facts are SO easily researched is unforgivable. Did the filmmakers think the story more interesting if Jeanne was a trashy whore who knew zip? Upon discovering Maiwenn was the Director made the debacle even worse. Had she truly cared about the project she would have cast an actress who would have been more enchanting less Linda Lovelace. The leaps of time taken at the opening of the film skip over and totally skew historic fact. Jeanne worked in both a high end fashion house and a wig salon where she met wealthy patrons and was in a position to become a kept mistress. Married Monsignor du Barry was NOT her pimp. In fact, she became HIS mistress. He cultivated her to present to the king for his own benefit, as a way into royal court. They were lifelong friends and allies, especially after the king died. She married his titled BROTHER in order to become the Kings mistress. The screenplay is totally rotten with cliche'. Jeanne never worked in a whore house but was a very wealthy kept mistress to many wealthy men, some aristocrats. WOW. Did the Director and writers do any research at all???

The “professional” critics are too harsh. Trust the audience rating. It’s a good film. Thoroughly enjoyed it.

So beautiful! One minute you are smiling and the next, trying to hold back tears. Maiwenn managed to bring you in/with Jeanne Du Barry on the roller coaster that was her life. Love against all odds. 💜

I was pleasantly surprised with this movie. I loved that the human side of the king was shown. His obvious boredom with all the pomp and circumstance was almost comical. The story convinced me that the King didn’t see Jeanne as being beneath him and he allowed her to be herself. The costumes and scenery were beautiful. The story shows that people really haven’t changed much over time. The English subtitles were easy to read and follow.
