Jerrod Carmichael: Rothaniel Reviews

Feb 12, 2024

It was an incredibly personal conversation that could be more of a therapy session than a standup comedy special. I appreciate his honesty in this one and felt it was more of a personal confession than anything else.

Raw, honest, sensitive, real. Everyone should watch this

This was not a comedy special, but a piece of exceptional performance art. It was masterful storytelling, an autobiography of sorts. It was written masterfully. I recommend it to anyone who enjoys masterful telling of the human condition.

A beautiful, intimate and thoughtful comedy special that finds Carmichael vulnerable, at times lost for words, and yes, very funny.

Jerrod Carmichael's new comedy special, Rothaniel, directed by Bo Burnham, was deeply touching and gratyfing. From start to finish this was a treat. It was truly funny yet so personal, and honest, and somehow that honesty and rawness was the most beautiful thing about this. The way this was shot and directed only made me feel more, especially on deeply personal moments when the camera was focused directly on his face. That was really smart of Bo. My God I love this so much. Please watch it.

I swear once he comes out it's like the show stops being about a man telling jokes to a pity party. Seriously even when he comes out he has this 5 second pause then looks up at the audience like "Oh yall not gonna clap for that?" When I heard he was coming out I thought it would be more of the witty and charismatic guy I grew to love but maybe he should have taken more time to love and except himself before doing this clearly his confidence is not all there.

My only previous experience with Jerrod Carmichael was this past weeks episode of SNL, which was one of the funnier of the season so far, and included an impressive monologue, during which I made a mental note to check out some of JC's specials in the future. This was far from what I anticipated while also offering so much more than I would ever expect from a comedy special. I was already making comparisons to Bo Burnham as he instantly comes to mind when thinking of comedy specials that transcend comedy, so was surprised, and then quickly not so surprised, to see Burnham directed and edited this. Just as Burnham's Inside was easily the best comedy special of 2021, it will be tough to unseat Jerrod Carmichael's Rothaniel in 2022.

This is a bright and funny young stand up comedian. He is a good storyteller and took on some bold and thought provoking topics. He is funny and interesting with a unique delivery. He definitely appears honest and unconcerned about hour the politically correct world will perceive his humor. I did not love it as a stand up special because it is not as funny as some; however, his storytelling kept me engaged and I did laugh. I do not like Bo Burnham, at all, and maybe it was his direction that left this one not living up to all it could be. Watch this comic though-I expect better and better things in his future.

More of an interesting evening at a bar than fart jokes. But manages to keep engaged and entertaining the whole time. Also has a consistent tempo of really funny jokes.

Jerrod brought something to this special I have never seen before. In a mere 55 minutes he releases himself to the viewer after holding himself in for so long. I've never seen this level of intimacy in a stand up special. It is such a open and personal setting that the audience even begins to talk to him and guide the entire narrative of the special. All credit to Jerrod but also a huge well done to Bo Burnham. His direction is so integral to how this special is put together. It's the first stand up special where the direction has stood out to me and it gave me a much larger appreciation for what is being done here. This conversation with Jerrod that the viewer has reminds me of Circles by Mac Miller in the sense that Jerrod takes his time despite the remarkably short runtime he lets the story breathe and it makes it feel like we are conversing with him, like were sitting down with a friend who is struggling. The jokes land every time, and the story hits hard. I want to see more of Jerrod. I think he is a huge talent, and wherever I see him or hear him I am very pleasantly surprised by what I'm seeing and what he's saying. Congratulations to everyone involved in the production of this including the audience. This better win an Oscar next year.

Amazing. Rare to see this kind of TRUE vulnerability in a performer.

So brace yourself for only a little comedy. But I was riveted by how personal Jerrod goes in this intimate chat. I know there are periods where he's not even trying to be funny, but I found the conclusion to be oddly cathartic. If you're open to a slower pace, this will be a true treat.
