Juanita Reviews

I''m thankful that I took a chance on it. With plenty to discover, I'm already eager to continue exploring worlds to which I wouldn't otherwise be privy.

Very middle of the road movie... Alfred Woodard is very good in it.

Mothers in American cinema are either deified or demonized," something Juanita successfully avoids doing.

Alfre Woodard is a gem, even if the movie isn't.

If the main takeaway from Juanita is that it exposes us to a variety of characters we're not used to seeing interact with each other in places that are also just as rare, it's a breezy watch that could pair nicely with a tall glass of wine one evening.

Although "Juanita" teeters off track a bit with the chef's half-baked back story, it soars when it allows its lead to explore the complexities of love and unbridled joy. And Woodard completely owns it.

The only thing keeping this movie from completely driving off the road is Alfre Woodard.

It's a step in the right direction for Netflix in one way, giving an older black woman her own narrative but one hopes that with progress, more adequate resources and more gifted storytellers will help bring these stories to light in the future.
