Julien Donkey-Boy Reviews

Apr 3, 2025

I'm surprised how negative the critic views are. I doubt any of them have a family member or know someone with schizophrenia and can't really understand this film. My sister is deeply schizophrenic and everything here rang true. It's a beautiful and heartbreaking film.

A challenging but unforgettable film from the master of bizarro-realism. Korine's script is vividly brought to life by the committed and naturalistic performances of the cast, most notably Ewen Bremner and Werner Herzog. Essential viewing for any actor or filmmaker.

Filme fraco, o roteiro é ruim, eu nem sei o que eu falo sobre esse filme só sei que ele é desinteresse e uma imagem horrível.

One of the best films made by Harmony, a mixure of every emotion under the sun, this was very emotional.

My favorite film of all time, the greatest thing I've ever seen on film bar none

A simple yet harrowing cinema verite snapshot of the lives of characters under the influence of both fate and the results of their own actions. Filmed under the somewhat severe strictures of Dogme 95, it is difficult to watch, and that is good - it's supposed to be. The film evokes a mix of emotions you will find in no other work. Bremner is so good as a hapless schizophrenic (and child murderer) he is nearly unrecognizable. Herzog is always brilliant and no less so here. This film is not for everyone. It needs to be viewed openly and without comparison or classification. I find it entertaining but not easy to watch at all. Korine definitely hit this one out of the ballpark.

Beautifully flawed. Well worth the moments, many, of expressionistic and poetic beauty. Has a real heart for it's characters. Great acting. Fun to boot!

Korines second flick, done two years after his cult film "Gummo". While that film was weird and quite gross this film is more experimental. Julien is a schizophrenic and a strange guy with issues. His family and especially his father acted out by Werner Herzog is also pretty spectacular. His sister is having a baby, probably his own baby and we witness their life. It's presented with many artistic points of view and presentations. Stills from scenes filled with sound, blurry pictures, weird angles. It's labled as a Dogme, wrongfully if you ask me - it does not follow all the rules and many are straight up broken. Still raw and direct. It feard it would be a very poor film, but it's very interesting and it has some very fine moments and scenes. Still it's not a masterpiece or something, but a pretty successful experiment. I found the schizophrenia a bit overdone and this is first and foremost a drama flick if you ask me. It's much sadder than it's fun. It's also feels a bit dragged, even with a rather fast pace and only about 90 minutes of playtime. 5 out of 10 aces on top.

Harmony Korine has found his perfect balance of gut wrenchingly disturbing and genuinely human implementing a documentary-like style which opens you to the harshly gritty realism he wishes to convey in every inhuman and human moment alike, though as Roger Ebert said "The odds are good that most people will dislike this film and be offended by it. For others, it will provoke sympathy rather than scorn. You know who you are."

This is a great movie, period.

Another garbage fest of amateur shock value, the likes of Gummo. This movie tries everything it can to be disturbing but it is just plain trash. Don't waste a second of your life on this heap.

I care not what "serious film critics" think. This is little movie comes close to being perfect.

"Don't scream. I don't want you to scream. Be a man and quit that moody brooding. " Even if you like movies that are extremely uncomfortable and dark (like me), you still might not like this movie. While I enjoyed this film, I couldn't recommend this movie to anyone. If you liked Kids, Gummo, Trash Humpers, and Spring Breakers, you'll probably like this movie. If not, stay far away.

I sincerely do not know if I liked this or not.

Such beauty and uniqueness that doesn't surface until you get deeper and deeper into the film. Each social commentary is as mesmerizing as the images are. Ewen Bremner gave an amazing performance. One of a kind films that doesn't have much to say, but has plenty to offer.

A film that should be running in the background during a terrible art exhibition. Not one to be watched at home for entertainment or enjoyment. Depressing for a couple of scenes, but mostly just painfully dull.

Harmony Korine's sophomore film "Julien Donkey-Boy" is an ambitious piece of cinema to chew on for the average viewer but this is only because of it's ambitious subject matter. While rigorously documented in the medical world, Schizophrenia as presented in first person has never quite been fully developed maturely on film. One of the issues with depicting this mental disorder on the screen is casting and Ewen Bremner as Julien could not have been better cast. We are lead into Julien's world through a variety of vignettes and lo-fi sequences that reveal the subtle complexities in Schizophrenic people. Is the picture a pretty one? No. The audience is left with images that disturb, haunt, and frustrate. However, watering down this content or omitting it completely would fail the sensitive subject matter in every possible way. As is the case with Korine's body of work, he is not haphazardly attaching an opinion on to his film but rather letting the cameras tell the story as is, untouched by the rigidity of traditional filmmaking (such as a definitive script, fully arched plot, and characters that must act a certain way). Korine's film is a triumph of true representation and succeeds in shedding light, or purposeful dark, on a disorder that is rarely deeply depicted on screen.

Been a while since I've seen it, but from what I recall - it sucks donkey balls.

Disconnected scenes from the life of a mentally disturbed lad and his bizarre family, shot through a shcizophrenic camera. As stylistically annoying as Korine's other movies, but also uncharacteristically boring; very little happens, and Julien is not an interesting character.

Nearly unprecedented cinematically, and yes, (look down) Cole Smithey down below is quite right: it could make you physically ill. However, one of the most important lessons I learned in film school is that simply because a film is difficult to watch or very disturbing doesn't make that film a bad film. Some of the greatest art that's ever been made has been remarkably controversial or even condemned as downright disgusting before people really understood what that art represents or wants to say. See how (look up) the audience percentage is more than double that of the critics? Sometimes the aficionados get it right and dictate to the people something that they don't want to hear: that the film they love is shit. Sometimes the people know better: that the film is brilliant. This film falls in the latter category, it's disturbing, but it's excellent.
