Kelly's Heroes Reviews
way overrated. neither the comedy, the heist aspect, or the combat action is anything special, and the cast of characters are mainly uninteresting oddballs
This has been one of my all time favorites. The critics and historians are possessed by historical accuracy. If I wanted that I would watch a documentary. I watch movies for the entertainment I derive from them. I find this highly entertaining. I am old, went into the military in 1970. After a lifetime the pathos of Burning Bridges by The Mike Curb Congregation is moving.
First heist movie that they actually got away with it? The scene with Clint, oddball, and Big Joe walk down the street to the tank was the main reason Clint Eastwood was casted in that role, Clint Eastwood wasn’t bad it’s because I only really know him as a cowboy. Him in the military didn’t work for me
One of my all time favorite movies, crazy how many people have never seen this movie.
Very good movie. Outrageous plot but excellent cast makes it work. Very 70s. Not accurate for WW2. Not even accurate for vietnam period.
A totally offbeat WWII movie. Not much truth about it, but that's the point. It's a story of the perfect robbery. And the thieves are not villains. The Nazis have a stash of stolen gold in a bank behind enemy lines. Is it illegal, then, for the U.S. troops to try to rip it off? The casting of the central characters is absolutely perfect. Rickles is Rickles; Savalas is Savalas; Eastwood is, of course, Eastwood. And Donald Sutherland is... a 1960's peace and love hippy who is time warped into commanding a squadron of tanks. You have to see it to understand. Not meant to be taken seriously. Just meant to be thoroughly enjoyed for what it is.
What can I say?? I love watching Nazis get shot and blown up every chance I get! The action in this movie was very well-done and so was the build up to some of it. Some of the humor landed, however at times the film does feel a little dated. Nevertheless, the acting and directing are really good and it's just amazing that actors like Clint Eastwood shined as much as he did in so many unforgettable legendary movies! Donald Sutherland remains a very underrated actor and deserves a lot of recognition for his career as well. It's really cool to think about how this movie could've been a potential influence for later WWII movies to come out that are just as good if not better (such as Inglorious Basterds or Saving Private Ryan). You can definitely see the overlap and pattern of inspiration.
One of my all-time favourites. WWII bank heist comedy. It has it all. The cast is stellar, full of legends from a time when Hollywood was worth something.
Putting aside the corn and the over the top silliness, Kelly's Heroes is still an overall fun movie to watch. Calm and cool Eastwood as usual holds this movie together. Donald Sutherland is funny at times but with many other times just way overacting with some cheese and the corn. The soundtrack choices too were just out of left field and wow did they ever make all the Nazi army so oblivious! I still present this movie as a 7.5 out of 10 and it was good to finally watch again after over 25 yrs of not seeing it until today. I also enjoyed the authentic tanks and movie sets to give it the 7.5 rating.
One of my favorite movies. I watch it at least once a year. The cast, especially Telly Savalas, are outstanding. Donald Sutherland, Clint Eastwood and the comedic genuis of Don Rickles make this one of the best movies to come out of a cornucopia of B movies from the 70s. The "Top" critics here could take a lesson in humility, and also make at least a semblance of an actual critique. Laziness is apparently the privilege of a"Top" critic. It you asked them to make a movie, I'm sure they'd be too busy sous viding their hamster.
For me it didn't work at whatever it was trying to do.
Just love this movie. I spent 24 years in Army. The SNCOs run the day to day from the stores to low level tactics and this story reflects this.
I know this tends to get good ratings and reviews but it didn't really appeal to me overall. There were some bits of fairly amusing dialogue and some decent action type scenes but there were also too many long, drawn out and fairly bland segments that stopped me from geeling engrossed. I'm not especially keen on older war films, it seems. I'd given this film a shot as I quite like Clint Eastwood films but I can't give it more than a 5/10 personally and I wouldn't really recommend it as such, no.
A film from my childhood I still enjoy watching today, good humoured, silly, brain in neutral and enjoy. Occasionally I find myself humming ‘I don't if you think my dog's a hound, you better stop kick my dog around'
This classic war movie was really good. Clint Eastwood, Telly Savalas, Don Rickles, Donald Sutherland, Carroll O'Connor, and the rest of the cast did an excellent job in this movie. The plot of the movie was action-packed, dramatic, and entertaining. It's about fighting to survive and finding a fortune that can change your lives. If you haven't seen this classic movie yet, check it out sometime. It's a definite must see.
A WWII heist movie with Clint Eastwood and Telly Savalas what more need you say? I felt that Donald Sutherland's Oddball has a more 60s Vietnam era vibe, consist of the year of filming, but his portrayal is excellent and fits the tone of the film. For me, the pleasure is in the supporting characters such as Don Rickles' Crapgame and Jeff Morris' Coyboy among others.
I enjoyed this one, a great cast and entertaining story that was amusing at times, but not necessarily believable.
Aside from the God-awful opening and closing music, it's not a bad flick. The scene near the end with the three walking up to the German tank, and the way the barrel lowered on them reminded me of that white flag greeting scene in George Pal's, "The War of the Worlds". Donald Sutherland's Oddball was clearly a Vietnam-era transplant into WWII, still, he had me on the floor laughing. "Why don't you stop with all the negative waves?"
