Kicks Reviews

Good movie. It was a ghetto coming of age movie with a character who after being shy and bullied stepped up. Otherwise, superlative acting from the entire cast.

Kicks follows teenager Brandon who lives in a poor neighbourhood and aspires to own a decent pair of trainers just like his friends. After struggling to save he finally gets his dream footwear only to be mugged by a local gang leader. Given the importance these kicks are to Brandon, and how they made him feel he treks across his neighbourhood on an ill-advised mission with his 2 friends to get his shoes back. The story is about the characters he meets along the way and how not everyone is who they first seemed to be. Kicks was a very different kind of film that at it's core is a gritty urban drama but also mixed in subtle elements of fantasy as we escape into the lead character's head and the person he wants to become. The young cast were very good and the showdown at the end was particularly menacing. Very different from other films of this genre.

Can't believe this has an 86% rating. Lots of dumb characters doing dumb things. But maybe the point of the movie is to get dumb people to watch it and reflect on their own behavior?

Fantastic movie. This is a coming-of-age tale that sets itself apart thanks to some beautifully stylish direction, a raw and believable script, tense storytelling and stellar performances from Guillory, Siriboe, Wallace and Meyer.

Such an intense and raw movie.

I like to story and the style but the age of the actor playing the main character is too young and the narration is overbearing.

A 15 year old man is dreaming of getting som Air Jordans on his feet. He's poor, short, not the coolest in the gang and he feels a bit left out since most people have something, but he got nothing. Cool shoes should fix it, so when he manage to get some he is suddenly the coolest cat in the hood. Some hoodlums manage to steal his kicks, so he's left with nothing again, until he decides to get them back. OK story, that's never really about shoes - that's the best part here. It's filled with ghetto talk and hard fellas for those who like that stuff, but for me it was a bit overdone. Scenes with house parties, weed, drugs, guns and violence is taking up a lot of space here, and I feel I'm watching some uncut rap music video from the 90's. It was cool when it was new and I was 14, but now it feels a bit dated. OK acted out, nice to see Mahershala Ali here too. I never felt that astronaut thing worked out the way it should, that could have been a way better feature. 6 our of 10 40's.

I thought this movie was profound it talks to a younger generation and their need to conform to societal standards of what they should wear or buy to fit in or conform, especially to the youth in underprivileged areas

One of the best movies I've ever seen. I laughed I cried, it was so artful and real. The acting was superb and the plot was one that tears at your heart. It's such a great film.

Depicts a close semblance to the day to day struggles of Afro-American male youth. Great Movie. And Jahking Guillory is headed for greatness

I was recommended a movie called Kicks, which is solely (ha) about a pair of shoes. The black and red Jordan I, specifically. The young protagonist, Brandon, is a great character because he is a real person. There are millions of him. He is taken by the idea that having popular, expensive shoes would infinitely improve his social status. He isn't wrong. It immediately does. What happens next, unfortunately, can only be described as "what comes with the territory" these days for high school kids wearing a car note on their feet. Who also don't own a car. That can lead to trouble. The music in the movie pulls you into the scenes they accompany. I really enjoyed the soundtrack. The movie is set in California, which is evident by the selection. There's some perfectly-timed slow-mo and excellent camera work. The movie never lets you get bored with it. I wasn't close to it, either. It's exciting. It's heartbreaking, at times. It's also rewarding. It reminds me of Moonlight, because manhood seems to be a pretty heavy theme. There was a loose focus on the lack of parental guidance, and how that manifests itself into seeking guidance from the wrong sources. Mahershala Ali shows up once again in a very similar role but only adds to the movie, which features a relatively unknown cast. Is that Charlie Murphy's son? I'll Google it later. If you like good film festival type movies this is a good pick, for sure. It clocks in at about 80 minutes, so you don't exactly have to plan your night around it.

Great movie and music. Probably the best movie I've seen so far in 2017.

Great movie. Acting was really convincing and believable. Powerful drama that didn't feel preachy with well thought out characters. Told a story that really shows how much perspective matters and how little you will ever know about a person unless you took a look at their life.

Kicks has a simple story but a captivating one about becoming a man and what makes that happen, which just so happens to be a pair of Air Jordans this time around. Some great shots and good chemistry from a rather young and unknown cast.

Maybe as a short it would have been okay, but it's simply just a lackluster of a movie. The plot is stretched very thin, the writing's authenticity is quite inconsistent, the characters are one-dimensional and very cliched and the "sci-fi" scenes with the astronaut don't really work in the film, it feels like it's only there for the sake of being there and to add "artistic value", which it did not. Overall, it has an interesting enough ideas, but the plot is quite uninspired and the fact that Kicks is the directors first feature film really shows. Should have been a short-film.
