Kill the Messenger Reviews
I think overall it’s a good telling of events but it also is kind of boring at parts. To quote a family member “there’s no action!”
An interesting story here but the way in which it is told a lot of the dramatic and emotional pull in should have on it's viewers is lost.
The content of the plot is very memorable to those of us living through the era, but vital for younger people to know what our government has stooped to. The extent of the backlash from the feds continued until "the messenger" committed suicide.
Based on a true story of a reporter who risks everything to expose the truth.
Fine film, but does nothing you haven't seen a million times before.
This is a biographic crime drama film set in the murky world of drug trafficking. The fact it's based on a true story interested me and seeing how different people of varying authorities respond to what's discovered is interesting but it isn't by any means a fast-paced action type film. I suppose its fairly thoughtful. It's interesting to see who opens up to the journalist working on the story and how people attempt to manipulate things. The performances are pretty decent, with Jeremy Renner playing the main role of Gary Webb. This is a competent film, one that felt more poignant toward the end, hence my rating. I would recommend it, yes.
This news drama was really good. Jeremy Renner, Mary Elizabeth Ronstead, Rosemarie Dewitt, Oliver Platt, and the rest of the cast did a fantastic job in this movie. This true story about uncovering the truth about the Contra War in the 1980s was thrilling, shocking, and dramatic. It's about uncovering the truth no matter what circumstances come your way. In reality, the truth always finds a way to the public and those in power will suffer the consequences and be labeled a monster forever. If you haven't seen this movie yet, check it out sometime. It's worth watching.
Taut drama. Although seemingly one-dimensional, I disagree with those who have used this as a slur. It is a story based on GW's findings, his search for truth, and the impact he had on events, so surely being one-dimensional means the screenwriters and director haven't veered off course! There aren't many moments of palpable suspense, but the few there are, are enough to add a stomach-turning element to just how 'real' his story was

Kill The Messenger was an enjoyable thriller about an investigative journalist but there was too much focus on the main character's family rather than on what was being investigated. Not too much happens, but it was entertaining enough, the pacing was fine, and the story was engaging at times besides the excessive focus on his family which took up far too much of the runtime. The cinematography and soundtrack were nothing special, but the acting was decent. It's definitely one of the least depressing journalism films.
this is as real and messed up as it gets. as a reporter i feel the paranoia! great watch!!
A really slow-boil drama. Based on a true story, the direction and Jeremy Renners performance are both reasons to watch this film
3.5/5 This is a competent movie, that doesn't really distort the issues surrounding the "Dark Alliance" series that Gary Webb wrote for the San Jose Mercury. But it feels too thin. I think the problem is that there's two movies here, or a miniseries, and both stories deserve a more fleshed out experience. The story of how the US funded the Contras in part with drug money is an important tale, and there were some really damning details that were left out of this movie. Then came the character assassination by Webb's fellow journalists, particularly from the Washington Post and the LA Times, who refused to believe that he could possibly be right. Extraordinary claims require extraordinary proof, we are told, but was the CIA cocaine trafficking really extraordinary? The NY Times published a piece about it in 1993. John Kerry held hearings in 1989. This film's release prompted the Post to write yet another attack piece on Webb, ten years after his suicide. Fortunately, other journalists called them out for it, including the Times. This isn't hagiography. Gary Webb had personal problems, and this movie doesn't shy from them. He is shown as arrogant and headstrong, never questioning himself. This should have been a better movie. I watched All The President's Men afterward, to make myself feel better about journalism's potential, and good paranoid thriller movies.
Superb performance by Jeremy Renner in this bio pic. The true story of a man who reported a story that the big papers missed and the CIA wanted hidden. This film has strong performances. Its main weakness is in the script which seems slightly underdeveloped. However, its a powerful true story that needed to be told. I am sorry I came to it so late.
Wow. I never knew about this. True story about how the American gov't brought in $1.2 billion of crack cocaine from South America, to raise money for their Contra army.
Jeremy Renner gives a great performance. Not much after that
