The Killing Reviews
The Killing is a movie streamlined and lacks extraneous fluff. SK's genius is earmarked with smooth pacing, type-cast acting, and interesting chronology.
Stanley Kubrick's noir is well-written and expertly acted. If only it weren't too slow to be enjoyable.
An intricate and perfectly cast noir heist that inspired Tarantino and others. Slow and persistent buildup and a nonlinear story lead to a riveting second half. Kubrick knows how and when to deploy spectacle to heighten the film's emotional intensity, and his use of visual motif delivers some unforgettable images. Great performances by Sterling Hayden, Elisha Cook Jr., and Marie Windsor.
Very biased movie, trying to tell us that crime doesn’t pay. The lesson is you should respect the regulations for carry on luggage. Actually the whole thing is very well set up and the voice over works. On Tubi.
Great movie. Quite entertaining. One of the best Kubrick's movies.
Slick Kubrick before he fully went into auteur mode, the movie works as a crime noir. The annoying newsreel type voiceover and cheap exposition in the dialogue are the only major faults with the otherwise great film. Great characters and stylish, giving Kubrick the chance to sharpen his greatness that would come later.
This was a young Stanley Kubrick's first great motion picture. Sterling Hayden and Timothy Carrey were terrific along with the rest of the cast. The film was well directed, well acted and had a brilliant plot. This is one of my favorite films by Mr. Kubrick. I highly recommend. 95/100
Kubrick's first great film, that still remains one of his best, I love The Killing. A great noir film that includes beautiful use of the 1.66:1 aspect ratio and incredibly influential nonlinear editing. The Killing is an enthralling watch that pays out in a surprisingly unexpected way.
The cinematography was good, as might be expected from Kubric. I liked some of the framing and low shots. The actors were excellent. But some aspects didn't work for me - jumbled timeline, voiceover, mumbling, characters making clumsy choices to advance plot, slightly corny ending.
'The Killing' is Stanley Kubrick's most underrated movie. It's time-shifting narrative is a work of pure genius, and you can see the film's influence on movies such as 'The Dark Knight'. Overall, I cannot recommend this film enough.
When watching the direction and listening to the incredible dialog, you know the man behind the camera is special. Crime Noir at it's finest.
Even though the heist genre has been done countless times, Stanley Kubrick's "The Killing" feels completely original and unique. The movie is probably the most fun movie from the legendary filmmaker's filmography. It is fast-paced and enjoyable and genuinely kept me engaged once the heist sequence started. I liked how it didn't give everything away right away and it made more and more sense as it went along. I think it is a great example of how to tell a story and present characters in this type of movie. Overall, it isn't necessarily the best movie Kubrick ever did, but it is the easiest to watch and maybe has the most rewatch value simply because of how much fun it is.
Great film noir by Stanley Kubrick. You can see the clear influence on Quentin Tarantino and the Coen brothers.
It would be watchable if Det. Steve Holder wasn't in it. He's so unlikable it's tough to focus on the story. Couldn't get through season 4
Really good. Great plot. Good acting. Very watchable. Well done.
Stunning, fast paced Kubrick film that is full of twist. Told in a documentary style, the film was quite ahead of its time, with its jumping/looping timeline not being a familiar structure at that time. Some of the exposition needed some trimming. Otherwise, a must see for fans of classic crime drama.
Being a relatively straightforward crime thriller makes it somewhat unique in the Kubrick filmography, and it's still one of the best movies in the genre.
Fantastic film noir, very enjoyable watch. The pacing is simply perfect.
One of the best paced, most tightly produced crime dramas I've seen for a long time. Watched it on prime.
