Kim's Video Reviews
An absolute must for film fans.

...Kim’s Video can only be described as a frustrating documentary that is sorely focused on the wrong things for far too long of its run time.

There's so much here, but ultimately it's a mess and doesn't quite do justice to what I imagine Kim's Video and its legacy is supposed to have.

It's a fascinating story, but the movie is a mess.

Redmon and Sabin’s doc claims the story of the Kim’s Video diaspora is an “overlap of art, crime and cinema.” It lives up to that description, in an amiably sloppy way.

A nonfiction work of swirling whimsy and rabbit-hole intrigue that eschews mere nostalgic appreciation in favor of a cockeyed hybrid approach that amuses and bemuses in equal measure.

The gratifications and fascinations offered by “Kim’s Video” are inseparable from frustrations, but it may yet prove powerful if it inspires other filmmakers, historians, and critics to examine this terrain more thoroughly.

A playful and intelligent film that teases one thing and delivers quite another.

Like any good neo-noir, this one has a serpentine plot with plenty of absurd elements and a lot of unanswered questions, but it also has a conclusive and rather happy ending, which is not noirish at all.

This caper-slash-personal essay is an admirable endeavor that honors, above all, a filmmaker’s fixation on a medium that makes him whole.

“Kim’s Video” reaches so hard for quirky profundity that it falls on its face.
| Original Score: 1.5/4 | Apr 5, 2024
The twists and turns are often jaw-dropping while the back-patting and glad-handing always proves a bit suspicious. It's a joke gone too far mixed with an exorbitant amount of luck to correct a wrong few (if any) even remembered.

While the true story about the Kim’s Video collection is both weird and distressing, it could have been told a lot more effectively as a straightforward short…there is a whole lot of manufactured drama going on as the film progresses
| Original Score: C | Apr 4, 2024
Just so pretentious, I honestly have no idea who this movie might be for, other than film critics.

Less a retail history than a shaggy dog story. One that actually appears to be true. Go in knowing that and you might get a kick out of it.

Kim’s Video is packed with drama, mystery, and humor.
| Original Score: 3/4 | Apr 3, 2024
Mildly engaging, but unfocused and meandering documentary

Kim's Video reminds viewers that there was something very special about browsing the shelves of shops both large and small.

If you think you know the story of what happened to the infamous movie collection housed at Kim’s Video on St. Mark Place in the East Village, think again.

...a case can be made for those films in which the storytelling--and the sheer fearlessness it takes to tell the story--reigns above all. That film is David Redmond and Ashley Sabin's Kim's Video.
