Kin Reviews
The script is so utterly pointless and offers little to no probative value other than to set up a franchise without a care or a thought into the current movie they were making.

Kin is at its best when the Baker brothers engage in sharp and ruthless action, whereas the screenplay's attempt to imbue the material with gravitas fails to create the requisite substance.

The film simply delivers a gripping, focused story that skillfully intertwines styles while somehow competently sticking the landing

Kin remains faithful to the portrayal of a lonely Black boy, whose discovery of a mysterious weapon allows him to become something of a superhero.
| Original Score: C+ | Jul 16, 2021
It's consistently serious, which is a spectacular way to allow audiences to digest the outrageousness of hi-tech alien weaponry.

Kin is an atrocious marriage of bad acting and laughable writing...

Kin is incredibly rough and detached, holding too much in its peripherals but nothing directly in sight.

A solid, worthy adventure tale. Kin certainly has its issues, but leaving us hanging is not one of them, despite what may be your initial reaction to the end of the film.

[A] slightly-above-Netflix quality film with enough heart and style.

Mostly works, despite some occasionally thudding B-movie dialogue.

The new film "Kin" wants to be many things: a sci-fi fantasy, a road trip comedy, a coming-of-age story, and a brutal actioner. At times, it succeeds in individually essaying all of them, but taken as a whole, the film is quite a mess.

Kin is a movie that never should have been made.

James Franco is excellent as the stereotypical sleazy dirtbag. As an actor, he is a chameleon who always delivers on screen.

The 80s feel that the film tries to imprint feels false. [Full Review in Spanish]

The elusive representation of an alien duel in an abandoned factory and the first zenithal planes show a clear unfulfilled promise. [Full Review in Spanish]

This laser gun story misfires.
| Original Score: 1.5/4 | Jun 6, 2019
Clearly the work of talented filmmakers with unique sensibilities, but it ultimately paints itself into a dramatic corner from which it never quite figures a way out.
| Original Score: 2.5/4 | Jun 3, 2019
Would've best been presented as a Netflix series of sorts instead of the overly stuffed, uneven science-fiction-come-road-drama it ultimately plays out as
| Original Score: 2.5/5 | May 1, 2019
Despite the calibre of some of the performances, and however fresh and novel some of the cinematography and pacing, it's difficult to recommend Kin because of its central premise.
