Krisha Reviews

Wow. Raw, harrowing and amazing filmmaking about addiction issues.

Terrible film. No compassion. Point of view was interesting but even this, although conveyed with technical imagination, got lost by not understanding the main character’s distress. Reminds me of Dickens's Christmas Carol without Scrooge’s chance of redemption .

Is there anything more uncomfortable than those occasions when disgruntled families gather together? 2016's 'Krisha' explores this in great detail. SYNOPSIS: 'Krisha returns for Thanksgiving dinner after ten years away from her family, but past demons threaten to ruin the festivities.' Filmed as part movie and part documentary, this is an incredibly awkward and troubling film which explores how addiction can devastate an entire family and cause unrepairable damage both physically and mentally. This is an ambitious first film from director Schults, who also stars in the film as the estranged son. It's an engrossing 80 minutes which feels like a car crash as things go terribly wrong but you can't look away. It's challenging because the scenarios feel so real. We've all been in similar family get togethers though maybe not to this extreme. It's an eye opening film. Almost genius. 8/10

A general description of the plot would understandably cause most to dismiss it as tawdry melodrama or the stuff of bad theatre, but the execution saves this thing. Paced and shot like a horror film, "Krisha" isn't so much subverting the family drama as it is slicing it open. When the emotional outbursts finally come they feel raw and unhinged. There's no resolution, only pain. Anyone who has witnessed this kind of emotional destruction at a family gathering knows how eerily accurate this depiction is.

Nepotism at its finest, writer/director/producer/star Trey gets his actual family to film a terrible portrayal of alcoholism. His lack of understanding of the behavior of an alcoholic is almost as bad as his lack of understanding of cinematography. Don't waste your time with this.

Best thanksgiving movie ever made

It's a painful holiday movie about an addict mom that comes home thinking that she's "done the work" and ready for what being around the whole family will bring. Unfortunately, the family isn't ready for her either.

Poster child for all subsequent independent dramas hoping to breakout and achieve some visibility. Sadly it's one of the only, if not THE only low-budget drama with no known actors to accomplish this in the last decade or so.

Not sure if Krisha is supposed to be a sympathetic figure but you can definitely understand why her son rejects her by the end of the movie. She's toxic. An absolutely terrific and complicated movie about a dysfunctional woman whom you root for although she doesn't deserve it.

I'd give it 0 stars if i could...i really dont understand all the positive reviews. It was a pointless movie with a stupid ridiculous ending, no resolution whatsoever. Geesh, if i wanted to watch a train wreck like this I'd just hang out with my family on Thanksgiving!!

Story? We learn that she messed up her life and alienated family. Then we learn that she is still doing it. Roll credits.

I have heard of movies considered a ‘slow burn' but come on. I actually prefer a slower paced film where some plot builds, characters are developed slowly and methodically. A lot of my favorite movies fall into that category. And I'd heard a lot of good things about this film and really looked forward to seeing it. I didn't finish it. I tried. I really did. But a half hour in and literally nothing happened. It was like peering into any home in Anytown, USA and watching the slow, boring events of a typical holiday gathering. I was looking for clues, development, characters to reveal some intimation of who they were. Nothing. Nada. Half hour in. I am sure that based on the other reviews there must be something special with this movie but for the life of me, I couldn't see any indication that it was worth another hour of my time. And I don't feel like I'm being hypercritical...I have a bit more attention span than the average person in society these days. Slow is fine. Slow is good. But give me *something* to chew on by the end of the first half hour. Plant a seed or two, build some suspense if you want to keep an audience in the dark. Let us know that something is going to eventually happen. Because I'll be honest with you: a million movies get released every year in the world and the vast majority of those fall into that category where your time is wasted and you regret suffering through it all. So I'm not sure that it's so much that I gave up on this film as I read the tea leaves (what few existed) and simply cut my losses. Maybe I'll try it again some day and see if I can find something about it that doesn't feel like boring reality 온라인카지노추천. If I do, I'll come back and edit my review.

What Trey Edward Shultz is able to accomplish here with zero budget and no professional actors (most of the cast are his actual family members), is nothing short of extraordinary. A unique vision of a woman having a total mental breakdown and its effects on her family.

Do Not Try This At Home "Krisha" is an excellent illustration of the naivete and obliviousness of individuals, families, and our culture about how to deal with substance abuse. If a relative with a substance abuse problem shows up after many years and asks to join the family at a major holiday as the first step of reconciliation, the family should say "no". The family should inform the substance-abusing relative that they will seek assistance from professional substance abuse counselors to develop a plan for their relationship. Families should not accept the self-report of substance abusers that they are clean and sober. Substance abusers lie. Assessment of the relative's sobriety should be by professionals. Meetings with the family, and especially with children the substance abuser abandoned, should be in the presence of a professional. FULL DISCLOSURE: My review is based on the trailer, reviews, articles. and muy professional and personal experiences. As a registered nurse, I received training in substance abuse. I worked with substance abusers as an RN. Co-workers were substance abusers. I have experienced substance abuse in my family including the death of my oldest son from opioids. Because of that, I was not emotionally able to watch the movie.

Trey Edward Shults makes his way to the front as a hell of a director. I want to see this movie more. 7.3/10

hard to watch but worth your time.

Krisha is a small budget, hard hitting, deeply personal film that has a strong emotional resonancy if not a film that fully succeeds. The debut film from Trey Edward Shults was made on the very small budget of $30000. It was basically shot in a family member's house. The film never actually leaves the house as the story is centred over just one day, that day being Thanksgiving when Krisha comes to visit. Krisha is sort of the 'black sheep' of the family. She abandoned her now adult son and has a lifetime of substance abuse. At first the day goes awkwardly well, but soon it descends into chaos and heartbreak as old wounds are opened up. It can be a hard watch sometimes as the dialogue is very strong and highly emotional. It makes for an intense film. At times the scenes go a bit over the top, stretching the strains of reality. And some of the acting is overwrought. But for a small budget debut film it's a very auspicious one.

Krisha is the story of a woman who has struggled with some substance abuse, who is now trying to reconcile with her estranged family over Thanksgiving dinner. There was a ton of authenticity to the film in the way the characters interact. This felt just like a real family, and I appreciated the way different people reacted in their own unique ways to any conflict. There were a number of scenes that felt a lot like they were improvised, which can get a bit awkward. It takes truly talented improvisational actors in order to make artificial long conversations feel real. But most of the way through Krisha didn’t feel overly staged. It also touches on real problems that families can deal with when they have someone they see as a black sheep. Although, I haven’t personally seen this kind of conflict at family gatherings, and I’d probably avoid it because I find it so unpleasant. There were some terribly lackluster scenes in Krisha. For instance, the moment where two boys go watch porn in the parents’ room is easily one of the most pointless scenes I’ve seen in recent memory. That time would have been more useful if they had worked in more conversations between Krisha and the boyfriend who encouraged her to attend this event. The MVP of the film was easily Bill Wise who plays Krisha’s wise-cracking brother-in-law. I found him hilarious, and I could actually imagine certain family members of my own who would behave just like him. Krisha Fairchild who shares a first name with her character did a decent job as well, because you could see her growing frustration and despair as the movie progresses. This kind of heavy family drama isn’t exactly my favorite, and at times I found it a little tedious. But I did appreciate that the film felt real, and I think people who are fans of mumblecore will get a kick out of Krisha.
