"Kumiko, The Treasure Hunter" leaves much to be desired, earning a lackluster two stars from this viewer. Despite a really good plot foundation, the film falls short in execution. The main actress fails to evoke empathy, leaving the audience disconnected from her journey. Expectations build throughout, only to be met with a disappointingly predictable ending. The film's pacing is hindered by a bland and boring first act, making it tempting to skip ahead. While the concept is undoubtedly great, it becomes clear that a great idea alone doesn't carry a film. The visuals are appealing, and everything looks great, but the lack of emotional engagement and the predictable narrative prevent this potential gem from shining. In the end, "Kumiko" offers a promising premise that unfortunately fails to deliver a truly captivating cinematic experience.

B. I'm not sure it would have made as much sense if i hadnt watched the original movie Fargo. A woman following her own path in life is something thats not explored much/done well in films which made it really great to see Kumiko do.

This film has quite some charm to it. Its quirky, sweet and somewhat mysterious, with good cinematography. I liked the shots of the titular character seemingly on her own in a large wilderness in the US. I felt sorry for her and wondered what the full story was - quite why she believed the treasure from the film Fargo would be found in the same place in the US (I have seen the film Fargo but some time ago). I can't say I understood the whole plot as such but I really enjoyed the film for its sense of mystery, the childish innocence and naivety of the titular character and I liked the incidental music played towards the end. I thought the subtitles were lacking a bit at the start, with it seeming there was more dialogue than subtitles provided - it seemed as if I could only read some of the dialogue but still, I very much enjoyed the film overall. The ending may frustrate some people but then it may delight eithers - its hard to say and I don't want to provide spoilers, so I'll just say that I enjoyed it and I'd recommend it if you'd like to watch something a bit different and your ok with subtitles.

Not too bad, the film has its moments, but ultimately unsatisfying.

Wildly depressing, slow and somehow engaging all at the same time. Kumiko is a wildly mislead woman faced with the cultural challenges of being single and not passionate about her work - when Fargo sparks her sense of adventure.

It's a parable on the illusion of worldly things, and our attachment to them nonetheless.

I mean, jeez. Maybe this poor, sad girl just needed a friend.

Elements of Coen-esque storytelling are clearly evident in this somberly comedic take on modern ennui. (3.5/5)

Great movie more people should see, especially fans of "Fargo."

I totally empathize with not wanting to deal with the stresses of life and people pulling you in every direction. Sometimes you just want to get away from everything. Maybe not to Fargo in search of a fictional briefcase, but somewhere.

OK film but, since I fell for the critics' hype, it left me disappointed. The movie is the story of a lonely Japanese woman, Kumiko. She's an 'office lady' who doesn't fit in to the strict constraints of Japanese society and doesn't seem to want to fit in. Yet, she comes off as extremely melancholy, which, if this were a true story, one would say she's clinically depressed. Kumiko is obsessed with believing the scene from "Fargo" where the stolen money is buried in the snow is true (this is based on a debunked urban legend). So, she plans and then goes on a quest, Don Quixote like, to Minnesota to find the treasure. The whole movie is intentionally bizarre, heartrending in its own way and, ultimately, just depressing. This is one of those films the critics go gaga over yet most ordinary people are left shaking their heads as to what they just saw. Unless you like this type of existential film, I would pass on watching "Kumiko, the Treasure Hunter".

Beautiful, haunting, slow moving movie. It deals with the insanity of isolation and loneliness so wonderfully. Every bit characters is so fully realized and captivating. Kumiko's decent into madness is engrossing and tragic.

Got to admit, not a movie I was seeking out, despite my love of all things Japanese, but I'm glad I saw it. I related to poor Kumiko more than I care to admit to.

If nothing else, this is one heck of a beautiful film to look at. And for some reason (I don't know if it's just my earphones or what), I really liked the sound editing/effects on this one.
