Kurt & Courtney Reviews
A good movie that goes off the rails toward the end apparently afraid of drawing the obvious conclusion that Kurt was murdered - but it provides enough evidence to call for a fresh new investigation, by the Feds (not the local authorities, who've covered Kurt's murder up with a false and rush-to-judgment suicide claim). A chilling account that screams for justice to be done, for once and for all.
Great documentary with a lot of evidence framing Love for the death of Cobain in exchange for a lucrative record deal and kurt cobain's fortunes from nirvana, Broomfield can't openly pin Courtney as the main suspect because throughout the film she is clearly making calls to his producers and financers threatening them with legal recourse. So he implies it as much as possible without agreeing to the obvious fact that she hired a killer to off Kurt and make it look like a suicide , El duche was killed right after he gave an interview for this movie stating that he was approached by courtney love to make a hit on kurt cobain. I also suggest watching Biggie and Tupac alongside this damning account of what truly occured to Nirvana's lead singer.
I had to stop watching after being subjected to the promo tape by El Duce. "Ok, i'll talk to you on the condition you show my promo tape". same with the guy with the red painted nails
Since I've been in a recent spate of documentaries and music related films, I finally gave this one a spin. Mostly it's a failed experiment, in that the director constantly interjects with what he'd envisioned doing with the music that Courtney Love naturally denied any chance of him using, so you get a lot of missed opportunities. Ultimately, it feels as if the director wasn't sure what take he wanted to put forward then meanders around looking for a voice for the film instead. Rental, at best?
Only 44% audience approval? That doesn't sound right, AT ALL. This was a brilliant documentary, despite how you believe Kurt died. Why did this film and "Soaked in Bleach" get such low ratings on Rotten Tomatoes? Somethings up with that..
I read somewhere that low reviews are due to Courtney Love fans who think Kurt killed himself. If that's the case, then f*** Courtney. But I don't think that's the reason for the low reviews. This film could have been a masterpiece Cobain biographical documentary. Decades after this film, Kurt Cobain: Montage Of Heck was released. Montage Of Heck is a masterpiece. Why isn't this? There's obviously something Montage Of Heck had that this film didn't. Montage Of Heck was filled with emotion, it went deep into Cobain's life and personality, and always kept the audience engaged with heart. Kurt and Courtney seems dull in comparison, and missed out a lot of important details and features that could've made this film better. I sound like an annoying teacher, but I do think more time and effort should've been put into this project. I love Kurt. I love Nirvana. I'm not going to let this affect the rating of this movie. I want to rate it a 5. But 3.5 is a deserved rating. It could've been better.
Absolutely one of the poorest made documentaries I have ever seen. 25% of the film was about the struggles of making the film. 10% explaining what the director is doing. 50% is about some wild theories of whether he was murdered or not. There doesn't seem to be any fact checking. I swear to god there's a scene where he interviews some chick who claims to be their former nanny. She got in contact with the director by leaving a note under his windshield wiper! One of the the final summations in the film is the director pondering whether any of the people he interviewed told him the truth. WOW...
Broomfields un-malicious cockiness is wonderfully shown in this documentary that was ultimately doomed on arrival and drowns in trying to actually find a purpose, feeling unfortunately more like a Courtney Love stitch up than anything else.
It opens a can of worms and does leave you thinking that maybe it wasn't a straight forward suicide. Broomfield interviews a lot of time wasters and freaks who don't exactly act as reliable sources. Still his film does highlight how money and power can manipulate the press and freedom of speech.
Some interesting facts and theories are presented in this documentary but it is poorly put together & presented. Some interviews are worthless to the story but included anyway.
I have never been a Nirvana fan but Kurt was certainly talented and creative. An interesting doco about Kurt and Courtney. I really think they suited each other, they were both lunatics, both on drugs, and had a hate love relationship. Did Courtney kill him? It makes you think? I also believe he had some form of mental illness and abandonment issues and the demons got the better of him in the end.
I thought it was marginal, and some of the people interviewed just weren't necessary to be included. It was an interesting thing to watch on a Saturday afternoon.
After watching Nick Brromfield's outstanding documentary on Aileen Wurnoss, I expected a lot from his outing, investigating one of the worlds most famous, destructive relationships. Instead we dont really get anything concrete here at all, its as if the planning stage kind of slipped Nick by on this one, even at one point admitting to the camera, "I wasnt sure what the angle of this film was going to be". It says it all. Nick bounces between stoners, loners, family members and conspiracy theorists, trying to get a sense of what the duos relationship is like, only to be side tracked for the entire thing on the conspiracy element, which is fair enough, had he followed it up properly. Instead he just dwindles back and forth, one minute were talking about how depressed Kurt was, next minute were being told how Courtney wanted him dead. Neither of which are explored in much depth, leaving the piece to penultimatley end with Nick himself taking a stab at Courtney in a very embarressing mannor. This film has some interesting insight but little else. No skeleton, never mind meat. A missed opportunity and one that could be avoided.
This is absolutely the worst music documentary I have ever seen. The subject matter was promising, as the questions and conspiracies surrounding Kurt Cobain's death are intriguing, however the presentation fell completely flat. The filmmaker pieced together awkward interviews riddled with baited questions and "Oh my gosh another roadblock! THEY'RE TRYING TO SILENCE ME!" moments to form an incohesive and embarrassing attempt at journalism. The only redeeming thing about this film was seeing the many photos from Kurt's life, but aside from that the whole thing is just sloppy. As another reviewer stated, it was almost comical to watch the trainwreck of "journalism" take place, from being kicked out of buildings to interrupting interviewees and making them visibly uncomfortable.
I am a fan of some of Kurt Cobain's music and also of Nick Broomfield's work, plus I'm intrigued by the conspiracy theories that surround Kurt's death. Perhaps the most interesting parts of the documentary were the missing interviews and the things that weren't said, that leave you pondering the where the truth lies.
I couldn't help feel there was always an agenda half the time to make Courtney look guilty, trying to make the evidence stick which is really quite horrible. On the other hand we saw some insight into the life around kurt and Courtney which gave us new depth to these icons which are household names
Nick Broomfield is a nauseating sleaze merchant . This has been described as luridly fascinating, and I guess it is a little, but it is the worst kind of PT Barnum-like exploitation of a train wreck that there is. Broomfield seems the type of person who would arrange for car accidents to happen just so people would see them, then drone on about the coverup that is preventing everyone from knowing the truth about the car accidents. He just feels like a real odious character to me.
