Kurt Vonnegut: Unstuck in Time Reviews

Vonnegut remains such contradictory company. His harrowing observations of inhumanity, most famously in Slaughterhouse-Five’s first-hand descriptions of the bombing of Dresden, seemed to render him ever more goofy.

| Original Score: 4/5 | Apr 26, 2023

[Weide's] thoughtful approach largely fits a subject where sadness, cynicism, laughter and optimism jostle fascinatingly together.

KURT VONNEGUT: UNSTUCK IN TIME, a biography of Kurt Vonnegut, has most of his early life told with home movies. Later the narrative is from photos of his articles, books, first pages of manuscripts, and footage shot by director Robert B. Weide and others.

| Original Score: 6/10 | Sep 18, 2022

It barely tries to assess the literary value of the author’s work, but it captures his good-humoured personality...

A film full of intimacy and affection, of insight into the effort it takes to be both an artist and a human being.

| Original Score: 5/5 | Jul 27, 2022

Vonnegut says he prefers laughter to crying, and it’s easy to see why... I don’t mean to make Unstuck in Time sound melancholy; it is charming, too.

[A] touching, if slightly unfocused, account of the fascinating life of Slaughterhouse- Five writer Kurt Vonnegut.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Jul 26, 2022

Despite being compiled on and off over decades, this fond, intimate documentary portrait of the influential, celebrity author and social satirist, gains from the lengthy process and is coherent and timely, even if it indulges the filmmaker a smidgin

| Original Score: 4/5 | Jul 26, 2022

The real warmth, the way the camera becomes almost incidental in the encounters between documentarian and subject... gives this film its satisfying emotional depth.

| Original Score: 4/5 | Jul 24, 2022

In a huge, non-chronological narrative whirl, the film duly celebrates Vonnegut’s work, but it also reveals a man haunted... it’s unlike any other literary documentary and, consequently, essential viewing.

| Original Score: 4/5 | Jul 22, 2022

Sentimental but level-headed, Unstuck In Time is at its best when you hear Vonnegut, rather than other people’s impression of him. However, even newcomers to his work will find something to appreciate in this labour of love.

| Original Score: 4/5 | Jul 22, 2022

A thrilling and personal account of a man who stood for much more than many give him credit for.

| Original Score: 5/5 | Jul 22, 2022

A comical, compelling profile of a singular figure in 20th-century American letters.

| Original Score: 4/5 | Jul 21, 2022

A remarkable documentary about a writer like no other.

A very touching and insightful film.

| Original Score: 4/5 | Jul 20, 2022

Provides a valuable and engrossing running commentary on the complex power of art and literature to shape and enrich the lives of all those it touches.

| Original Score: 4/5 | Jul 20, 2022

A well made story sprinkled with emotion and hardship.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Jul 19, 2022

Definitely one for the books...Vonnegut himself comes over as a lovable, irascible jokester, forever talkative and funny, the many clips from his lectures – some of which can be seen in full on YouTube – showing what a bone-dry wit the guy had.

| Original Score: 3.5/5 | Jul 6, 2022

You don’t have to be a fan of Vonnegut to enjoy this 127-minute documentary. Indeed, there is not a lot of literary analysis. It’s more a story of what happens off the page.

| Original Score: 4/5 | Jul 1, 2022

Moving at a steady pace, enough time is granted to see a beaming smile turn bittersweet. [Full review in Spanish]
