Lady Macbeth Reviews

Jan 21, 2025

Anchored by an amazing Central performance from Pugh, this is not a tale you know where it will go. Sparse, cruel and explicit.. don't put this baby in the corner!

Not Shakespeare. You already know how it ends so why watch.

Florence Pugh has been developing into a great actress, so this movie caught my eye. With a title like Lady MacBeth, I was expecting Shakespeare, so I decided to check it out. Katherine has married into a respectable English family but it’s becoming increasingly clear that she is bored with this arraigned marriage that leaves her unhappy as her spouse finds her attractive but unloved. So, as he leaves on business, she gets to know the land and the people and begins an affair with a laborer who becomes less discrete because she cares about nothing but her happiness. Such selfishness leads to a wickedness that leads to murder and scandal. This was amazing. A dark, tragic tale of an evil, selfish woman who gets away with many awful things told in the backdrop of an era that didn’t regard a woman as an equal to a man but that is no excuse to do awful things. There is so much about this that is so well told and can see how great a story this can be but making no mistake it’s not a rewatchable one. Great acting, but too tragic to watch again.

brilliantly done and atmospheric but gross motivation made it not credible and unwatchable

Florence Pugh turned a performance for the ages! I only just saw this film recently and I would put it as one of the better performances I have seen in the last year or two, easy. She played that role with such complexity, I couldn't help but to find myself sympathizing with her; helplessly drawn into her twisted plot, until it was too late to turn back. Shot in mostly long takes, the director and editor really gave Florence Pugh freedom deliver the performance she wanted, and the movie is the all better for it. Lady Macbeth delivered on stellar excellent character development, top notch costume design, same too were the production design and art direction. I also wouldn't be surprised if it was mostly shot on locations, because so many of those sets were unmistakably real. In total, just top marks all the way around.

This film was a brilliant exercise in character development and execution ... Well done!

I had been hearing about this film for some time. Glad to finally catch it. This was really interesting. I'm so confused here, because I want to call every single character except the maid the bad guy.

Florence Pugh is so in possession of her characters. This movie was intense. I liked the slow, deep passion and obsession.

the movie about the consequences of sexual deprivation

This thing had me picking up my jaw from the floor from time to time. The main character is such an interesting and frightening force. No wonder Florence Pugh was such an instant star.

A period piece basically about a serial killer, portrayed by the beautiful, uber-talented Florence Pugh.

A haunting and at times brutal psychological thriller, led by the brilliant Pugh.

First off this struck me as a very atmospheric and eery type watch from the start - it has a looming sense about it. There's noteably little in the way of dialogue, with a fair amount of scenes being set (if just at the start) in silence. This leaves the viewer wondering whats led to what is going on, the motives of people and what might happen etc. It appears very much a symbolic watch, being mostly about the perception of women by men at the time its set in (the 1800s), how worthy their deemed etc. Its decidedly unsettling, with violence present, if only now and again but there's a definite tension present throughout. Its not just the dialogue thats sparse but the rural setting also appears desolate and undoubtedly adds to the atmosphere present. I suppose it acts as a sort of metaphor for the female characters, who feel stuck in their various roles/situations. There are some relatively saucy scenes present, so it may not be an ideal watch to see with family but as an example of an atmospheric watch, its good, just be aware that its a slow moving film, so don't expect slick action scenes or a fast paced plot. Florence Pugh does well in the titular character role, I'd say. Her costumes look quite stunning at times and she comes across as a well thought out character. Overall I'd happily recommend this film.

I was not sure how I would feel about this movie given the subject matter, but man did I enjoy it. I did not expect to love this movie. I only read the synopsis before watching and didn't even take a look at the cast, but Florence Pugh's performance blew me away (I've come to expect that of her tbf). Spoiler-ish: The coldness that she depicted when anything or anyone stood in the way of what she wanted was amazing. The scene with Anna and her father-in-law? Absolutely chilling. Spoilers for sure: The manipulation she displayed when Sebastian felt guilty by saying "WE did this for US" when it was indeed her that was dealing the deathly blows. Sebastian is not at all absolved of his part (especially when it came to poor Teddy!), but him taking the punishment (and Anna as well) and Katherine getting off for murdering two men AND A TODDLER…is one of the most realistic endings for this subject I've ever seen. Their love did not conquer racism or be like Romeo and Juliet. Katherine said she would do anything to be with Sebastian, said that she did everything for them, and in the end she saved herself and herself alone. 10/10, standing ovation, all of that.

Very well made. Great story. Well worth watching if you're into period pieces with all kinds of treachery.

Some great acting from Florence Pugh. What starts out as a mundane Lady Chatterley's lover storyline takes a more interesting and dark twist. The film is short, but maybe that helps with the pace. Surprisingly good.

Though the plot is slow and the story joyless, Florence Pugh handles the material with a dark, desperate anger simmering underneath the porcelain surface.

Lady Macbeth is a cinematic gem, mainly for the impressive and raw performance of Florence Pugh, as well as being accompanied by a very interesting plot tuist,a wonderful script and extremely surprising twists. Definitely a film that is great, fantastic, scary, cruel and fascinating at the same time, certainly a masterpiece.

I loved the maincharacter and the actress did such a great job portraying her, you really felt how cold she was. The setting and costumes were great considering the movie was low budget. The plot surprised me in many ways and always threw me on a rollercoaster.
