Last Flag Flying Reviews

Three great actors stuck with terrible writing. Never flinched so many times watching a film, not because it's gruesome or anything, but because of how cheesy and unnatural the dialogue is. I would rather watch the new Snow White.

Filme fraco, o roteiro é fraco, as cenas são fraco, o elenco é fraco, e ninguém ajuda a melhorar o filme, a história é fraca, e o filme deveria ter cenas bem melhores e mais relevantes, para fazer o filme ser bom.

Consistent in the characters and plot. A very sad, bittersweet outlook on war and what patriotism should mean and be. It raises questions on how the military should be handled, and what we are actually fighting for. Amazing acting from amazing actors such as Steve Carell, Laurence Fishburne, and Bryan Cranston.

I'd somehow forgotten how compassionate and gentle this movie is at its heart, instead remembering the ribbing, jokes, and jibes between the three main characters as some of the key parts of the movie. Whilst they are significant, their reason for being is to cement the relationships between the characters and allow the contrasts between them to feel more real and empathic... and to bring levity and added warmth to a serious tale. The story itself is a sad one, but the movie doesn't feel melancholic. It asks significant questions, promotes comparison, brings forth smiles and laughter, and also pokes at the tear ducts. In some ways, I think this has grown more poignant and significant with time.

Pretty good movie. Really did expect a little more from it. I did like the pace and tone. Did well to make you see and feel where each character was coming from. Some things we left still unexplained, yet I don't know that they needed to and maybe that was intentional. Biggest knock, Brian Cranston's accent seemed a little forced, but his portrayal of the alcoholic veteran in denial with something heavy in his heart was spot on.

I expected more of this film considering its 3 big stars. I was underwhelmed. The film at times was confused if it wanted to be a comedy or a drama. The film took to long to get the characters to their emotional endings. A little too much "now they are bickering again" and "now they are telling old war stories again" that just delayed the plot. The last act was touching, but still cringe at moments in its execution. Despite this, the performances were good and the ending pulled at the heartstrings. Overall, an okay film.

A touching, superbly acted character study with some subtly delivered truths but also some sharp, achingly funny lines – particularly from Bryan Cranston's character.

I watched this movie last night, the cast is great, really good chemistry between the 3 main characters. The story itself is great as well as the acting and script however I think the music attached to the movie is below par and is only thing that let's the movie down. Would definitely recommend.

How did I never hear about this movie? It is an instant classic for me. I laughed, I cried, I loved the character development. Featured some of my favorite actors who were very convincing in their roles. This movie was thick with explorations of personal values and life lessons: growing up, consequences of life choices, aspects of emotional maturity, and an examination of different people making different decisions based on their differing personalities and backgrounds. Furthermore, the characters demonstrated how we can learn to respect others' perspectives, as difficult as that can be sometimes, and still show love to each-other.

Beautiful movie about service, loyalty & friendship. Well acted. I'm not crying, you're crying.

Last Flag Flying is an absolute gem of a movie, cinematic arts stripped down to basics with no embellishments. Let's start with a little appreciated highlight - Bob Dylan's superb singing of his 1997 song "Not Dark Yet" over the closing credits. Dylan's voice never sounds better. Backed by achingly sweet looping harmonies, organ sweeps, mesmerizing drums and a bass that goes on and on, this sonic production by Daniel Lanois really is one for the ages. And this song is so appropriate as a closing comment on the movie's story - about three Nam vets coming to terms with the shame of a lie from their past. Superb layered performances by Steve Carroll and Bryan Cranston, so real, and a first-rate script that only had one or two weak lines. Highly recommended. Would definitely watch it again.

The film meanders quite a bit and not in the interesting ways Linklater's films often do. That said most of the performances are quite good, especially Carell who is low key and moving.

As a 7 year served British Vet, who was part of Herrick 9 & 14 around the same time period. I commend this film and the message it portrays. The futility of war and the damage it causes and yet the brotherhood it creates. An excellent performance by Laurance, Bryan and Steve. Truely Touched my heart. Thank you for this production

Almost didn't watch this movie, but glad I did. I think it's a tribute to all the young people, every generation, who lose their lives in more senseless wars. The acting is perfect.

Don't now how this slipped under the radar for me! Chose it as one of my final Netflix DVD's -- (yes I was a 23 year 'lifer'). This ensemble cast was amazing! Well directed, low key but with a strong message of what folly wars have wrought Screenplay was impeccable. Whole production was well-balanced. A must see!

I would have liked to have scored this movie higher but it has too many flaws to really become a classic. Too many bar scenes, motel rooms and supposedly revealing, tedious dialogue. Meandering, repetitive, in fact very long winded. I enjoyed it but with such a stellar cast I expected more. You could easily edit out an additional forty minutes from the script and no-one would notice. It would have been a much better film if it was eighty to ninety minutes long.

It wasn't sappy. It was well done

A heartfelt performance by Steve Carrell lifts this above what might otherwise be a flag-waving tear jerker. As someone who served during Vietnam it resonates strongly and mines the emotions that still nag at anyone who knows someone who was lost in that or subsequent conflicts.

I enjoyed the private male banter and raw emotion. The political commentary was on the money. Thought it cohesive, poignant and funny. I both laughed and cried.
