The Late Show Reviews
Brilliant film! The acting is top-notch and the writing is taut. One of those subtle masterpieces that gets better every time you watch it. They don't make them like this anymore.
Good charismatic performances by the leads, but in terms of storytelling it was a bit of a fizzer. Failed to build tension and had a made for 온라인카지노추천 vibe. Really did not have much comedy and what little it did have was very muted.
Maybe the oddest of the oddball neo-noirs. The plot isn't all that interesting but the movie knows that. These characters are why we are invested with Tomlin and Carney's hilarious and enduring duo at the heart of the whole thing.
Art Carney plays a small time, broken-down private detective in 1970's Los Angeles in this Robert Altman deconstruction of the noir genre. When a long time friend (Howard Duff) is killed, he begins to investigate, only to get pulled into a web of theft, infidelity and murder. Carney is absolutely wonderful as veteran detective Ira Welles, who is forced to deal with a variety of quirky, off-beat characters living at the edge of LA. society. He has plenty of help from a solid supporting cast that includes Lilly Tomlin, Bill Macey and Eugene Roach. Highly recommended to any fans of Film Noir and its descendent, neo-noir which flourished during the 1970;s.
Art Carney proves there's more to his talent than just Jackie Gleason's foil in The Honeymooners. You'd be inclined to doubt the pairing of Carney and Lilly Tomlin but it works. This film was the sleeper of the year when it came out.

Very entertaining, clever script, wonderful work by Lily Tomlin and Art Carney. If you get a chance, definitely see it. (I'd give it 4.5 stars if I could.)
A disarmingly poignant comedy wherein the clever plot is a conduit of the deeper truth of two apparently completely different people somehow finding each other in a way that can't help to draw you in. Take the chance to give this film a view and you'll be taken by the quality of the script, the direction, the quirkiness, and most of all through the wonderful performances; the chemistry between Carney and Tomlin is magical.
I didn't find it the least bit entertaining.
Ebert was right, as usual. This is a wonderful mix of straight gumshoe movie and a sort of piss take on detective movies. Helluva cast: Carney, Tomlin, Macy, Roche, Joanna Cassidy and the twins. There's some issues with the clearly limited production values and some editing, but those qualms aside, this is a fun little flick, with some really nice comedic moments. I love Carney's character. He's seen it all and has very little time for flakes & phonies or tolerance for fools. "Sit down and shut up". "Not in the last 10 minutes"- 2 of my favorite lines. 3.7 stars.
good mix of an old detective struggling midlife crisis and a peculiar case who falls under a satisfying conclusion surrounded by an also peculiar cast with strange chemistry and a rather forgettable scenario location who fails to deliver an proper Mood , nevertheless The late Show had enough premise and very entertaining performances that keep you up to see what comes Next....74% is my Rating Score , Fresh but skippable , nice sunday afternoon movie ....
Writer/director Robert Benton is someone who absolutely has my number and I'm a huge fan of everything he does, from "There Was a Crooked Man" and "Bonnie and Clyde" to "Nobody's Fool" and "Twilight" (the Paul Newman film, not the lovesick vampire movie), I love all of his films. In this one, Benton presents a charming revisionist detective film with broken down detective Art Carney being hired by kooky Lily Tomlin to find her cat. Like most old detetive stories, a simple missing person (or cat) case turns into something much more complicated. Carney and Tomlin are a terrifically mismatched pair. The supporting players are amazing. But most of all, Benton's dialogue and script are a spot on love letter to classic Hollywood detective pictures while at the same time subverting the genre tropes. This one is a must see for fans of classic Hollywood noir and/or 70s revisionist films.
The honeymooners and this movie prove that Carney is one of the best American actors of all time. Shame he did not get many great roles such as this one. If you are a fan of detective fiction, smart scripts and film making, watch this flick. Rx!
In a nod and wink to hard-boiled film noirs of old, actors Art Carney and Lili Tomlin make an amazing pair - eccentric, hilarious, and nothing short of brilliant.
Art Carney's late career resurgence is quite interesting, and The Late Show is solid if unremarkable. Interesting PI movie. Tomlin's character gets on my nerves in that Shirley MacLaine New Age-y sort of way. Or is that just Tomlin's go-to character for her at this time, I'm not sure. Art Carney is just so easily watchable, even while not really doing much.
