L'Avventura Reviews

“Lavventura” doesn’t seek a conventional framework. It asks the audience the observe, think, and process. It is that type of engagement that makes Antonioni’s film a true classic.

| Original Score: 4.5/5 | Aug 22, 2022

L'Avventura is a film all of one piece: landscape and architecture, the sound of the sea and the eloquent asides of Giovanni Fusco's score.

L’avventura fascinated and infuriated audiences with its deliberately cryptic tale...

Antonioni's film has been bitterly dividing audiences for six decades now, and the same viewer doesnt always see it the same way twice. 19-year-old me thought it was pretentious hogwash, now I think its a masterpiece.

Episode 43: The New World / Synecdoche, New York / L'Avventura

| Original Score: 100/100 | Oct 4, 2021

An original game changer, Antonioni spun cinema into a direction of new possibilities, down avenues well-traveled now by generations of filmmakers since.

| Original Score: 5/5 | Nov 3, 2020

Compared to movies, period, L'Avventura is good. But "good" for Antonioni is too flat and monotonous a praise, much like this picture.

Sandro and Claudia spend almost the entire film chasing a ghost, but in doing so are really uncovering the fragility of everything their complacent lives had held so concrete.

| Original Score: 4/5 | May 12, 2020

An assault on modernity that transformed modern cinema.

The best picture I've seen since Hiroshima, Mon Amour.

Rightly considered to be a cinematic landmark.

Antonioni's cool, beautifully photographed film isn't really a mystery and certainly not a thriller. Audiences over the years have delighted in deciding what it really is all about.

The film just looks great. That black and white cinematography is just divine.

For those who love obscure European cinema this is one of the true masterpieces.

| Original Score: 5/5 | Apr 5, 2017

The adventure was not merely sexual, however, but a radical rethink of film language: the characters' motivations were left opaque and unexplained, and the story never quite resolves itself -- rather like life.

| Original Score: 4/5 | Jun 10, 2016

L'Avventura eschews conventional narrative drive or sophomoric emotional satisfaction in favour of gorgeous compositions, inimitable style and an acerbic sensibility.

| Original Score: 5/5 | May 23, 2016

This is a world without design, where characters can no longer single-mindedly pursue goals and resolve problems.

| Original Score: 10/10 | Jan 29, 2015

Antonioni's film rewrote the language of cinema, questioning its addiction to storytelling and opening up the possibility for other, more enigmatic and poetic forms of expression.

| Original Score: 4.5/5 | Dec 1, 2014

There are certain things audiences have come to expect from the plots of motion pictures, and even in 2014, L'avventura feels angry and fresh because it upends those expectations gleefully. Being anti-plot doesn't necessarily mean that its plotless.

| Original Score: 4.5/5 | Nov 22, 2014

It's easy to bash Antonioni as passe. It's harder, I think, to explain the cinematic power of the way his camera watches, and waits, while the people on screen stave off a dreadful loneliness.
