Le Week-End Reviews
How she treats him is awful. Imagine it the other way around she SHE falls down and he just tuts and walk away!!!
What an astonishing ninety-some minutes of movie watching! This remarkable slice of cinema is some sort of damn near perfect film, as ridiculous the idea of that is. I don't really give a care, it knocked me out. This is a long-lived in house; this is well worn in shoes, with shredded soles and frayed laces where aglets used to sleep; flop, crinkle, sag and bop. A weekend away in Paris, where the city of lights becomes a setting for encounters, attacks (verbal and even physical), reflection, desire unfulfilled but love scrambling madly to stay afloat in a sea of (yes, I will) ennui, a lake of flakes. The near-constant swinging of Meg's moods, moments of Nick's self-pitying, questioning himself and his marriage, their open admonishments and admissions- these are the broken little palaces of life and monogamy. Is she bipolar? Tripolar? Are they breaking up? Or is this the ebb & flow, the familiarity breeding its contempt, the winging and wagging that will make it all bare-able from now on? Jim Broadbent and Lindsay Duncan are astonishing as this very authentic, almost too fully realized couple. They maintain this brilliance with their keen skills, but the ingenious, perceptive writing of Hanif Kureishi make it all the easier. Its director, Roger Michell, hits all the notes right, letting the city, the script, and his grand lead actors fill it all in. Plus, there's Jeff Goldblum being endlessly, helplessly Jeff Goldblum. This man is never really sad. I am Jack's jealous ego. 4 stars
It took a little while, but I found myself immersed in Nick and Meg's relationship and their romantic Paris adventure. Jeff Goldblum was the only actor I recognized and he was wonderful. This movie showed a more realistic portrait of a couple on vacation than I've ever seen. It reminded me of the many wonderful trips I took with my husband which made some scenes bittersweet. The background music was Nick Drake, who was one of my husband's favorite singers. Normally I am turned off by a lot swearing (particularly the F word) but it didn't bother me that much. Good writing, acting and absolutely gorgeous scenery made up for it. Looking forward to watching it again
Jim Broadbent and Lindsay Duncan are an older married couple on vacation in Paris and the characters they play are authentic and emblematic of married life. Then Jeff Goldblum shows up and energizes a movie that needed a bit of spunk for my taste. This is a romantic, yet subtle British comedy with that underlying sense of sadness. It's totally worth watching for any of the three main characters, but if you're a fan of just one, this is a must. The film tackles some really difficult issues and it won me over. Final Score: 8.4/10
The story was somewhat pointless and nonsensical. It;s unrealistic that these two senior citizens with ordinary lives would [mini spoiler alert] suddenly become able and willing to defraud restaurants and hotels for large sums. Jeff Goldblum was the only enjoyable character in this movie. And even then, his fawning over the protagonist did not make that much sense.
I love Jim Broadbent but this movie illustrates perfectly the saying first world problems. The director is going for bittersweet as the tone of the story but only achieves meh.
Im surprised to read so many bad reviews of this film on here. One other reviewer wrote its just about life. Yeah, and thats what makes it such a nice film to watch! The dinner speech by Jim Broadbent has to be one of the funniest things Ive watched in ages. Its wonderful that the only person who appreciates it, is the pothead son of Jeff Goldblum. This film is not a classic. But there are some great actors in the film - including the still very sexy at 60 Lindsay Duncan - and despite all the misery in the film, it still ends on a positive note. So cheer up! Perhaps the film is more like life than some dare to imagine.
Its a intellectual discovery of an older couples connection and self realization during a 30-year anniversary getaway to Paris. More than I ever got! All too real and accurate, it hurts to admit that it reflects many intertwined lives. Nonetheless they stick it out together. They have too much history. They are forever deeply connected. Interesting exploration of relationships, especially in contrast to that of an d friend and his new younger pregnant wife.
A truthful & hard bitingly honest depiction of a struggling British Couple having a Long Weekend in Paris & re-connecting with an old friend. I find this film may be to hard hitting for Rom Com followers but had some terrific scenes that where truthful. Jim Broadbent was sensational in his role & added much depth. The location of Paris is used superbly & is an important for struggling marriages. A clever film that is worth a viewing.
Quirky, oddball, rather wonderful movie about a middle-aged couple celebrating their thirtieth wedding anniversary by bickering, falling out and finally rediscovering their affection for each other. Lovely truthful performances from Broadbent, Duncan and Goldblum; discreet direction by Roger Michell; and a lovely nouvelle vague score by Jeremy Sams. Hanif Kureishi's script only misfires when he goes for whimsy and the occasional airing of his personal peccadilloes. Lovely.

A delightful drama about the depth and understanding of true love. Le Weekend is heartwarming in more ways than one and that's all by virtue of the charming performances of this great cast. This movie is simply lovely.
This movie was awful. I couldn't even watch the whole thing. It was like spending an evening with a couple who like to have spats and insult each other in front of other people because they think their boring marital problems are so fascinating to other people.
