Linoleum Reviews
Firstly, I have no idea why the film was called Linoleum. Although in the end there was somewhat of a tying up all the loose ends, the just unfolded too slow and too disconnected for me to enjoy it. I get the end message was nice but I can't say I felt enriched after watching it.
A charmingly peculiar comedy-drama that seems aimless, but hooks you in with its off-color presentation and weird chain of events that occur throughout the movie. The soundtrack is beautifully ethereal and cosmic. Jim Gaffigan gives a terrific emotional performance that really digs deep into the regretful aging melancholy at odds with our youthful inspirational hope and enthusiasm to pursue our dreams. The movie has an interesting dilemma of self-worth, regret, and how we perceive ourselves and the world around us. How life can often feel disappointing when we don’t quite achieve the future we once envisioned in our heads as kids. How it can make us feel smaller and insignificant in hindsight. But it’s important to remember and appreciate all the good we’ve accomplished and why we chose our paths in the first place. And the way the film wraps up with a surprising twist that I legitimately didn’t see coming that ties into the pre-established themes of our own perception of reality and how hard this can be warped with age without the aid of our loved ones. It really makes you re-evaluate the entire film and see the whole thing in a completely different light.
Love this movie. Stop reading about it, don't watch a trailer. Just enjoy and bring a kleenex (if you have a heart in your body). Good job Jimmy! We knew you could do it! Actually we were very surprised how well you did this...........sorry. Good job though!!
I really enjoyed this film and the way they set up every aspect of the story. The movie doesn’t waste a single moment to build on its plot. Using the möbius strip as a key story element had my jaw drop at the end of the film when everything connected in one amazing moment. It totally stuck the landing. It took a moment to get into the film but I’m so glad I stuck with it.
Charming, touching, slightly bewildering, one of the best films I've seen in a long time.
I loved this complex, surreal film which keeps you guessing throughout. It’s so engaging and the characters so interesting that you enjoy the not knowing. It’s very refreshing to see an American film that successfully deals with some pretty deep issues without being melodramatic or sappy. Jim Gaffigan gives the best performance of his career. And all the supporting actors—although most are not well known—are great. Not a single weak link. My husband abd I both loved this from start to finish. Hope a lot of people will watch it even though it’s not a big Hollywood blockbuster—that’s actually a big plus to me. This film so much heart and soul. Director Colin West made an incredible film and in such an artistic way.
Arrgg. Started watching this and was enthralled at the potential. Within the final 10 minutes it became too obtuse and disjointed. Usually with a confusing movie conclusion I'll go back and rewatch it. I honestly don't think I could gain any more understanding or enjoyment with another viewing. They had a good movie premise, but spoilt the chance of it being a Great movie right at the end. A confusing mishmash. Lots of pseudo scientific facts but the main character who wanted to be an astronaut seemed to forget that underneath the habitation module there needs to be hundreds of tons of booster rocket. TBH it was like a birthday party without any presents, cake, jelly and ice-cream or guests...... a disappointment. I don't normally write a comment about movies I watch, but in this case I qas so frustrated with the experience I just had to tell potential viewers.........avoid!
Oh sweet sweet dementia! Linoleum is a wonderful timeless story of a man trying to find his way through his clouded memories. It's a tender tale of dreams and darkness and how love helps you through it all and gets you home in the end.
Is magnificent in so many ways. Just perfect
The movie was great assuming you can tolerate the pulp fiction like time flips and have an open schizophrenic mind .worth watching
A thoughtful, quirky little movie. I found the ending quite moving.
Well this isn't what I expected at all. What a refreshing, nuanced, slow and perhaps brilliant film carried by the writing and directing of Colin West. This is very science fictony and not a comedy drama. Jim Gaffigan and Rhea Seehorn have a chemistry that culminates in the final scene. This film comes together brilliantly in the last five minutes. It has a super pay off which can forgive the confusing moments that occur over the first hour or so. Katelyn Nacon and Gabriel Rush steal the show. This is not for everyone, but the ending will satisfy. Final Score: 9.0/10
Wow, amazing movie. Acting and dialog keeps you intrigued until the end. The story unfolds to a beautiful heartfelt ending.
Wow. Was unsure in the beginning but was pleasantly surprised. Amazing plot and was in awe at Gaffigan’s performance. Never saw the ending coming- I ugly cried!
Not predictable! Great acting.
Something completely different. I was glad to see this and only really did for Gaffigan. This one really surprised me with the metaphysics and unique plot. It didn't fully pull it off for me though, but I still enjoyed it. Saw on Delta.
I stopped the preview because I knew I wanted to see the entire movie immediately, without knowing more about it. I was not disappointed. One of my top ten (literally just finished watching it) of all time. I was bawling by the end. Outstanding acting all around.. Gorgeous sets and wardrobe. Definite 'Donnie Darko' vibes. I'm really looking forward to watching this again (...and again, and...)!
This is one of those "you get it or you don't" movies. I got it, big time. One of the most fascinating, imaginative, and moving films I've seen in a long time. It does require patience, but the wonderful reward, even if somewhat predictable (at least to me), is at the end. You have to be emotionally open to its message and it helps to be of a certain age (older). Perhaps to hear it clearly and understand how it affects you requires sharing your feelings about it with others. You can't say that about most cinema these days, and that makes "Linoleum" special.
Maybe not for everyone, but a thoughtful trip around reality. It's so simple.
have just watched one of the most intriguing and profound films I have ever seen. "Linoleum." It's on Hulu. When you experience it, you'll see what I mean. That is, if you stay with a narrative that is odd, to say the least. I was drawn in by the fantastical and perplexing sequence of interactions between the characters and events, though, and was rewarded with an ending completely unexpected and stunningly affecting. Writer and director Colin West has crafted a breathtakingly brilliant film.
