Listen Up Philip Reviews
It would be insufferable if it wasn’t so sharp and witty.

A Philip Roth-inspired triptych...

It’s a good thing that you aren’t required to like or root for a main character in order to enjoy a movie. If that were the case the film “Listen Up Philip” wouldn’t have a fan in the world.

Jason Schwartzman's off-kilter, idiosyncratic screen presence and line delivery can be just as much of a hindrance as an asset.

A key work in the foundation of a new independent cinema. Movies that don't demand the characters to go on an arc, but the viewers.

Perry shamelessly imitates his betters at their worst; only the arrogance is genuine.

Listen Up Philip is a quirky movie that will satisfy those of a certain disposition. You'll never find it fascinating or frustrating but you can't deny that this is a breath of fresh air in that time of year when CGI is exploding across multiplexes.

Running a bit longer than it needs to doesn't help, but regardless of any nitpicks, this is surely an interesting film and unlike many put out this year. It has its own particular atmosphere stamped on it.

Listen Up Philip, in the end, is just like the central character it describes. It petulantly demands to be heard even as it has nothing to say.

Between the slapdash and choking cinematography, the oppressive narration, and the hideous characters, I didn't find anything fun or funny in this so-called "comedy."

Like the Seinfeld mantra, there's "no hugging, no learning" for Philip or Ike, just characters who are fascinating and maddening in their apparent talent, self-centeredness and isolation.

As it went on, wallowing along... I started really losing patience with it.

Very droll and well-observed.

The cast give consistently good performances, with Elisabeth Moss on especially good form as Ashley.
| Original Score: 3/5 | May 7, 2020
A fascinating study of the mythical American belief of achieving genius.

There are little touches as such, and Jason Schwartzman remains his usual self-destructive best, but whenever the film shifts away from his insufferable young hipster author, Listen Up Philip readily becomes a plodding bore.

Everything works to add a greater intimacy to Philip's life: a life that we may enjoy looking into and a character that we may enjoy watching but, truthfully, a person that we would hate to be compared to ourselves.

An odd vagueness of intention dissipates the energy of this initially bracing study of a novelist.

After those 20 minutes pass, carried mostly by Schwartman, the movie finds its vintage brogue-clad feet.

The dialogue is brilliant - fast, smart and incredibly funny.
