Little Big Man Reviews

Dec 27, 2024

This show should be shown in history classes. So much here and told in such an interesting and fun way. Dustin Hoffman and others are great in it. A wonderful western telling some really - although possibly embellished historical fiction. Would love for the people of the 2024 and younger crowd to see how movies used to have action and real stories to them.

An endlessly entertaining forgotten gem that has aged well.

An All Time Classic. The acting is spearheaded by Dustin Hoffman and Chief Dan George who have great chemistry and Hoffman balances being charming, naïve, humorous, and above all else likeable throughout. Custer is a really good villain as well. The closest I can somewhat describe his character and the tone of this film is a Western version of Being There (1979) for the most part. The cinematography is excellent with plenty of beautiful shots, memorable scenes, and a great final battle. The music is very good though I wouldn't call it catchy but it is memorable for its bluesy country mix. The editing is excellent and always focused on Hoffman throughout and PERFECTLY balances humor, drama, and character development that a large chunk of the time I can't tell if this is being a satire or serious and it blends perfectly. It absolutely is a Western first though and a comedy satire second. It also in a sense is a satire demystifying the west as well. The comedy is very clever and gets consistent chuckles throughout but never crosses over into slap stick or outright comedy if that makes sense. It's a great balance between fun, laughs, and drama. This all leads to beautiful pacing throughout and weaves between drama and comedy seamlessly. Anyone should give this a try once.

We just watched this movie again tonight (May, 2023) - about the fifth time I've watched it. It is such a colorful, entertaining movie that brings humor into a story that is overall filled with tragedy. I don't know about its historic authenticity, but it opens one's eyes to the failures of the early American government to understand and accommodate the natives who were here before they were.

Such a great film. Very interesting & engaging story, great characters, and surprisingly a ton of great humor despite the seriousness of a lot of the subject matter. One of Dustin Hoffmann's best movies.

Little Big Man from 1970 is considered a revisionist western, but stands out from the tradition with a subtile sense of humor, irony and even sarcasm. It starts out as quite serious, but gradually develops into a comedy or parody of the genre, with some of the characters getting a bit too over animated. Just as you wonder about the point with this, the film turns into a great tragedy, where we suddenly are deep into the bloodiest massacre. It's not easy to fully understand what the intention is with this immense contrast between comedy and tragedy, but it absolutely makes one's stomach turn, and the film is based on a novel. All in all this film is some kind of western history predecessor to Forest Gump, where we follow Jack 'Little Big Man' Crabb through much of the mere two decade where the Wild West was lost. The cast is brilliant and it's hard to believe that Dustin Hoffman in the main role is actually four years older than co-actress Faye Dunaway, but he had the young looks and proves himself as on of the greatest character actors. Hpwever, his performance and the makeup allowing him to portray the 121 year old Jack Crabb will for ever be most outstanding.

Make America human again. Superb movie made by the director of Bonnie and Clyde. Here the violence lies in the facts of a country built in the Indians' blood, far away from a classic western, and into the pacifist main character Jack Crabb who doesn't know where he truly belongs, he only knows that he is a human being and questions with a lot of humor the values of our society, echoing also with the Vietnam war.

A goofy first half followed by a much better second half. Little Big Man is about Jack Crabb and his life with American Indians and the White Americans. The first half is a bit slow and over-acted. Jack Crabb is saved by the American Indians and is raised by them, until he is nearly killed and states he is white and knows of George Washington (which remarkably stops him from being killed). He is then raised by a white religious family where the matriarch is played by an overacted Faye Dunaway and includes a scene of her washing Hoffman in a bath. He leaves them to go around selling a fake healing potion with this other business man which I felt was a bit uninteresting and boring. Crabb is then reunited with his sister, who I found very irritating, and becomes a gunslinger (where not much happens). He marries a Swedish woman, which I didn't find that funny except for the hilarious horse and cart scene. From this point on the film becomes much better and explores the savagery of the White Americans against the Native Americans. Hoffman's acting also becomes somewhat better in these battle scenes. I thought Old Lodge Skins's dialogue was much more emotional and impactful. The actor, Chief Dan George was deservedly nominated for the Best Supporting Oscar, although I haven't seen the other nominated performances and so can't say if he deserved it or not. The final battle was a bit silly, especially Custor, who became too much of an eejit. His water gurgling and his Grant monologue was a bit too ridiculous. I was glad too see the film end on a more somber note showing the old Jack Crabb sitting in silence in a world so different from what he knew. Overall, the second half really saved this film but some overly silly scenes and performances did hinder this film for me.

"Major, it would cost us the vital element of surprise." "Surprise? General, they know we're here!" "Yes, but they don't know that I intend to attack them without mercy!" Based on premise alone, I was assuming that Little Big Man would be a bit of fun revisionism, touching on the big events of the 19th century Western frontier like a sort of exclusively domestic Forrest Gump (and it does play out that way throughout a fair bit of its runtime), but instead it also incorporates a surprisingly dark sense of humor alongside a very critical rendition of the US presence in the settlement of the West. I can't imagine that this was met with much approval by the crowd that was still watching the half-dead wizened John Wayne stagger out for a paycheck for Western dramas (that were admittedly getting more complex, but still had a core that had remained pretty consistent throughout 40 years of traditionalism), but it's surprisingly prescient for its time and plenty entertaining, and operates as a solid parody on those same films. Given Faye Dunaway's role, I'm surprised we didn't get a "Ms. Pendrake, you're trying to seduce me." (3.5/5)

Western, comedy, historical farce. It has it all.

My absolute favorite movie of all time. Seems at first like it might move along slowly, then jumps from scene to scene, time period to time period, almost constant action, a series of vignettes, with short periods of rest while we listen to the wisdom of Old Lodge Skins, the Cheyenne chief who adopted a small white boy, the survivor of a wagon train raid, Dustin Hoffmanns's Little Big Man... the boy grows up and ends up on the losing end of pretty much every battle he is involved in, including serving as a scout for the infamous George Armstrong Custer who is portrayed as a madman US Army General bent on destroying the Native American tribal way of life... there is laughter, there are tears, there is love, and vengeance, and final glory.... a film for the ages in my eyes, and very well done as a history of the US Governments plot to drive the Native American from his native home and into the useless and wild wilderness... a story for the ages. Chief Dan George, Faye Dunaway, wonderful parts done by all.

The movie has some humorous moments but overall it’s an average film that’s too long, inconsistent in its tone, one sided in its history, and downright bizarre and awkward at times.

The prosthetics and makeup on Dustin look so good. You can tell it's him through his voice. See! Not all Native American tribes were savages. Really nice seeing how this tribe took him in and brought him up after he lost his family, pretty touching. Wow, Faye is gleaming with beauty. It's funny how these "Christian" white folk seem to be more savage than the Indians that raised him. Beating him when he "sins" and shit. That Indian girl, Sunshine, is so pretty. Wow, she's really cute. Damn! The dudes a champion! He knocked up three girls in one night lol. Wow, Little Big Man went through a lot in his life. I'm glad Custer got what he deserved. I love the relationship between him and the grandfather chief. He always seems to find himself back with his Indian family which is always nice to see. Always go back to your roots and you always find truth. Interesting to see this man's story and journey. So full of different phases and diversity. I think all this is about tolerance and learning from different walks of life. Really nice social commentary on how the white man wanted to eliminate the Native Americans. They were the real savages, not the Indians. Great wide angle shots throughout the movie showing the beautiful landscape of Montana, California and Canada. I'll never understand why the white man had such a bloodlust to eradicate the Native Americans. I think it was summed up pretty good by Grandfather. He said its because they view everything as already dead, whereas their tribe sees everything as living and with life. I think this movie does a really goo job at depicting how evil and savage the white man really was, having no regard for human life. Basically slaughtering and hunting them as if they were animals. I guess the moral of this story is that the white man could learn a lot from the Indians who had a different outlook and philosophy of life, a more beautiful one that doesn't really involve religion or sin.

Anti-American and anti-Christian propaganda disguised as satire. Doesn't work for me on any level.
