Little Children Reviews

Mar 20, 2025

Great cast! Good performances! And that's about it. The story was a compete mess. Very superficial and nothing profound about it. Desperate housewife has an affair with a desperate stay at home dad. And in between the sad story of a sex offender who lives in the neighborhood. The narrator throughout the movie was supposed to bring this terrible thing together? I don't think so. I skipped it for so many years but I decided to give it a try. Bad idea. Waste of time overall.

Little Children is a brilliant tale and does justice to it's original novel. Given that this film was written by Tom Perrotta (who wrote the novel), it perfectly captures the spirit and what I liked about the book onto the screen. This also stands as an amazing stand alone film, with great performances and probably some of the most brilliant cinematography I've ever seen. The one letdown of the adaptation was the exclusion of Slutty Kay's storyline.

Not at all worth the time. I felt like a wasted my time. Although the actors/actresses did a great job in the movie the purpose of the movie is not well clarified. Is it about children, is it about a devoured sex life of married couples or is it about sexual abuse? Jackie was great with the character but honestly that was cruel to even watch. One scene made my eyes bleed. Maybe the story outlines problems that could;ve been faced by couples with children I guess but I cant see the point clearly. The movie didnt start that great so I didnt have much expectations anyway. But thought it at least could end well.

Kate Winslet is the greatest actress of my time. I honestly never hesitate to watch a film that she's involved with and I am never disappointed. This film sits in the shallows and never dives too deep but it works, it's modest and feels real.

The beauty of art is that it can mean many different things to many different people, regardless of or sometimes even in spite of the artist's intent. How you interpret this movie and what you get out of it will depend on a number of different criteria and how you relate, or don't relate, to the players involved. At its core, I think it's about two disparate but equally unsatisfied people who surprisingly find a connection. We've seen this in a thousand movies. The secret sauce here is the subplot involving the local sex offender, played by Jackie Earle Haley in an absolutely phenomenal performance. It's an amazingly complex role and our feelings about him eventually run the gamut. The storylines converge at the end, and one is forced to re-examine our thoughts and feelings about all of these characters. Winslet and Wilson are both great here, and it's interesting how each of them handle the effects of their affair differently. Connelley's is the only character (and/or performance) that feels a little off. With limited screen time, she isn't given the opportunity to flesh out a character beyond the suspicious jilted spouse. Kudos to Phyllis Somerville in a small but heartrending performance as Haley's mom. There are scenes here among the most disturbing and psychologically troubling I've seen in any movie. I get something new out of this every time I watch it, and it's an awesome movie to discuss with someone afterwards. It's likely you'll have very different opinions about what you saw.

One of the most cringeworthy movies that I have ever seen. Just gross with unlikable main characters. Can't believe Kate Winslet chose to be part of this. Ick, ick, ick!

It was a movie about a**holes. I can't stand watching movies about horrible people. It just kept getting worse and worse.

One of the best films I've ever seen. The pool side shot, is remarkable.

Winslet and Wilson have a suburban affair in this drama about the lives of the folks in the neighborhood. A pedophile moves in to add some spice, but its a painful view into discontentment.

this movie was so bad that i made a rotten tomatoes account just to review it. this was genuinely one of the worst movies i've ever seen. i sat there for 2 hours wanting to take my own life while enduring this actual dumpster truck of a movie. this was the most boring movie i have ever watched and it is written horribly. the story is terrible. i don't know why this piece of sh*t is rated so high but please PLEASE do something else other than watching this. i wasted two hours of my life sitting through this trash. i would have rather been spoon fed raw cow testicles for two hours than watch this.

An intelligent tale of the underbelly of suburbia. A role that is right in Winslet's comfort zone and as you'd expect, nails it.

A thoughtful suburban melodrama, this is like an updated art house Peyton Place.

Apparently this film had very limited theatrical success, but the marketing team may have really shot themselves in the foot there. Imagine saying this out loud to someone you know: "Hey, wanna go watch Little Children with me next week?" Before TÁR comes out for home viewing, I figured it was time to swing back around and watch the film that Todd Field made just prior. You know, the one that came out 16 years earlier. And man, I was not prepared for what Little Children turned out to be, essentially the second-most disturbing suburban sadness drama after Todd Solondz's infamous 1998 film Happiness, which is so off-putting that the content has actually sabotaged its own home market availability. There was a whole wave of films that sought to cash in on the premise of relatable disillusionment in the American middle class, but few deliver what Field does with this film - not just with a sense of isolation in a populated world, but disillusionment and a crushing sense of self-repression. There's such a clear understanding of social phobias and the slow drain that grating daily interactions can bring to bear on a person who once felt vibrant and engaged, breaking down not only a sense of self-worth but formerly strong relationships. People meeting up to find some sort of redemption for past misdeeds or to fill the holes in their spirits that have grown without their knowledge; the reaching becomes a flailing, and then either a collapse or a deadened medium to coast with. Field taps into what most suburban sadness films want to be, but seldom become. Though Kate Winslet and Jackie Earle Haley understandably received waves of critical applause for their work here, Noah Emmerich really delivers an unsung, unhinged portrait of a man who is coming apart at the seams, who will latch on to any scrap of human affection and lashes out at others to compensate for his own trauma. (4/5)

The best acting performance from Jackie Earle Haley!

Strong character study of people living on the edge of their emotional limits. I'd actually watched this movie years ago, but it was involving enough to enjoy - though that's not quite the right word - again. No surprise Jackie Earle Haley got a nomination for best supporting actor - a tour de force in which he really embodied the kind of person other people fear, though he's not imposing at all, on the contrary. His infamy precedes him and yet he seems harmless when one gets to know him.

I'm pretty sure I've never seen Kate Winslet produce anything less than excellence in her career, and Little Children didn't offer anything to change that view. It's an odd film, directed by Todd Field in only his second directorial outing. But as I feel like I say every week, odd often means interesting and this is certainly that. It's an excellent three hander, Winslet wonderfully supported by Patrick Wilson and Jackie Earle Haley. Winslet and Wilson are two depleted spouses from separate marriages who strike up a relationship which immediately stinks of more than just friendship. They bond over their two children, made easier by the fact that Wilson's Brad is a stay at home Dad, and can spend every week day with Winslet's Sarah. This seemingly simple story is hijacked by the return from jail of a sex offender, Hayley's Ronnie, who goes back to living with his Mum, in the same neighbourhood. The occupants of the town are horrified by this, especially ex policeman Larry (Neil Emmerich) who appears to take serious exception to this. Hayley's performance is superb, and although the screenplay obviously far from sympathises with Ronnie's past offences, it excellently scripts his inner turmoil at attempting to have a future with some sort of normality. The characters intersect throughout the film, and there is a very dark comedic tone to the film that is emphasised by a very cleverly written narration throughout the film. I feel like the film isn't hugely well known, despite award nominations, and is well worth your time, especially for the three central performances, and a terrifically adapted screenplay, from the novel of the same name.

Here we go again with another lame ass film . First off the guy narrating made the movie even worse and tacky nobody gives a damn what Kate **honestly forgot everyone's name** that's how lame this movie is but anyways no one cares what Kate is thinking we can read it all over her face and everyone else face and body language started falling asleep I'll spare you pretty much the child molester walks free which I have no idea why that needed to be in this film but it just had to be which is stupid ! community can't handle it and then they decided to add a typical miserable married person who cheats wants to Run away but didn't happen because he messed up skate boarding and Kate loses her daughter and then they both decided that they should just go home and accept what they have . so spectacular let's give this golden globe pppppppppppleaaaaassseeee . Lame ass movie

I can already tell this movie is going to be on the more serious side. There's great chemistry between Winslet and the NighOwl guy. Wow Jennifer Connelly looks great. Interesting to see how the community treats the sex offender guy, who is the actor who plays Rorschach, like a pariah. Interesting how the movie goes into all the different characters lives, even the sex offenders life. We see how he's a grown ass mommies boy who still lives with his mom. If it weren't for his mom, he'd probably be in prison or dead. His mom has a good heart and tries to guide him down the right path. Unfortunately he has a mental illness and was caught doing something fucked up. That scene when he's in the car with his date and he's masturbating in her car to the playground was one of the most twisted, disturbing and unsettling scenes I've seen, wow. The way it was filmed was very impactful. I feel so bad for her little girl, Lucy. All she wants is the love and attention from her mother but she neglects her and acts like she wishes she never had her. God, that climatic ending was so intense, you didn't know what was going to happen. I'm glad each character learned a lesson at the end and was able to move on. Oddly and darkly comedic in nature. Almost has a Truman Show mixed with American Beauty vibe. Its social commentary on perversion is oddly comical with an undertone of darkness and reality. A peculiar glimpse into the odd suburban life that can exist anywhere. It's interesting because everyone has their dark little secrets and urges, but I guess she are worse than others. It just depends on the point of view. Great social commentary on the panicked and fearful culture that exists in our society. This movie was very thought provoking and aware. Very smartly and cleverly written and wonderfully acted. Very very, very interesting character study of a movie. This movie actually turned out to be quite beautiful; with all of its messages that are life lessons we can all learn from. It definitely captivated my attention and was thoroughly entertaining, but it's themes are quite dark. And for that reason I don't think I'd care to own the movie. I would re-watch it again at some point though.

I can never turn away from this film. Kate Winslet is riveting in her perfect imperfection. I love how she steals the man from his perfect wife just by accepting him for who he is and loving him not just in spite of his flaws, but for them. I love that even though he fails her in the end, she doesn't fall apart. I love how it shows all the flaws and strengths of each person and how relatable it makes them, even the villain. It shows our terrible, beautiful humanity. It's quite wonderful in a stark way.
