Little Women Reviews
A quiet little gem of a film.
| Original Score: 3.0/4.0 | Sep 14, 2020
This adaptation completely bungles the update.

Kudos to Niederpruem for attempting a contemporary vision for the March sisters, but the present-day context erases and ignores too much of what was remarkable in Alcott's classic story.

I wanted to champion a sweet locally filmed movie and tell you all to hunt it down. Sadly I cannot.
| Original Score: 2/10 | Feb 25, 2019
Anyone appreciative of the novel or any one of its well-made adaptations will recognize the shallow hunk of junk this really is.
| Feb 9, 2019
It fell short, and it's nothing you need to see on a big screen. Or on a small one either.

Not all of the plot adjustments work, but the production is cheerful and heartfelt, and for some reason it's always Christmas, so it wins points for sheer merriness.
| Original Score: B- | Oct 16, 2018
A disappointing, 21st Century update that's behind instead of ahead of the times.
| Original Score: 1.5/4 | Oct 8, 2018
Don't march out to this one.
| Original Score: 1.5/4 | Oct 5, 2018
Artificial, stiltedly foolish update of Louise Mae Alcott's 150 year-old classic.
| Original Score: 4/10 | Sep 29, 2018
None of the characters have chemistry, which is particularly problematic when it comes to the film's romantic plotlines.
| Original Score: 1/5 | Sep 28, 2018
Niederpruem gives it her very earnest all, but falls short both on continuity issues... and on making her gradually aging cast match up.
| Original Score: 2/4 | Sep 28, 2018
For devotees, the essence of the Little Women story remains, and, for newcomers, it is a sweet film that should inspire them to explore the book and the more traditional adaptations.
| Original Score: 3/4 | Sep 28, 2018
Louisa May Alcott's timeless novel is revived for yet another generation, but the changes leave little to love.
| Sep 28, 2018
A modern day version of "Little Women" has to be one of the cheesiest ideas ever considered, but by golly they did it - and did it up right thanks to a fresh and talented cast.
| Original Score: 7/10 | Sep 28, 2018
The girls in this contemporary retelling are not messy and complex human beings but Hallmark Channel characters, two-dimensional symbols of virtuous nostalgia.
| Sep 27, 2018
You can't wait for this little woman to grow up and get a life.
| Original Score: 1.5/5 | Sep 27, 2018
Most damning is that Niederpruem fails to engage with her central, powerful idea. Despite setting Little Women in modern times, the film is disinterested in using the new period to explore the bigger questions at the heart of Alcott's novel.
| Original Score: C- | Sep 27, 2018
This cinematic update ultimately not so much honors its source material but exploits it. Not in a bad way, mind you, merely an unnecessary one.
| Sep 27, 2018
This modern update of the beloved classic novel is embarrassingly misjudged, so earnest and on-the-nose a transfer to today that the March sisters feel not like modern girls but odd, out-of-step transplants from another time.
