Living in Oblivion Reviews

Feb 5, 2025

I’m giving this 5 stars because it’s rather brilliant and the best movie ever made about being a director, specifically. But being a director myself (and in the DGA), it’s a 100 minute PTSD episode wrapped in a nice package. It was horrifying watching this thing, frankly. I’ve had every single nightmare occur on set that happened in this movie, from romantic entanglements off set between cast and crew to an obstinate lead actor to the usual technical issues, and probably 10x more than that. So I didn’t find this a “hilarious comedy” at all, it’s probably funny to everyone else, but I found it a horror movie about my life basically. It made me realize this must be how making almost any movie really goes, it’s not just me. If you want to know what it’s like to direct, watch this thing. Trust me, it’s perfectly accurate. This stuff ALL happens, and worse.

I had not heard of the film, and was wonderfully surprised by this quirky look at the nitty gritty of indie filmmaking. The cast is full of ringers, led by Steve Buscemi and Catherine Keener.

Steve Buscemi en unos de sus papeles más notorios, aunque poco conocido. El lado ameno del cine independiente y las dificultades del mismo, desde la óptica del cine independiente. Puede que no sea del agrado de todos, pero vale la pena conocerla.

I'm not sure if the general public would warm to this film, but if you've ever directed a film crew you'll love it. Although it's a bit close to the bone. From banging the clapperboard in actors faces, self agrandising cast trying to upturn a scene, one thing after another ruining the take. There is another layer too, where the film style itself is a nod to film clichés and blunders. It's a lot of fun. And anything Steve Buscemi in it is worth watching... he's awesome.

Very funny satire of small time movie making. Buscemi rules!

Moreso than probably any other movie, including Day for Night and 8 ½, Living in Oblivion allows the viewer an inside look at the filmmaking process. Nick Reve (Steve Buscemi) is a director working on a low-budget independent film where Murphy's Law seems to be the only law. While dealing with a pretentious cinematographer (Dermot Mulroney), a doltish leading man (James LeGros), and an angry dwarf (Peter Dinklage), Reve needs to figure out how to keep his senile mother (Rica Martens) off the set. Despite a gimmick (without giving away too much) that seems lazy, the cast seems to be having a ton of fun, there are some genuine laughs, and you might just learn a thing or two about how to make a movie.

Very funny and well put together comedy about a struggling indie movie director.

How did this one evade me for so long? A great indie movie with some of my favorite actors.

Unique, exciting seeing everything play out, interesting set up, and I love the final scene. The final scene is actually what brought me to the movie. Nice!

Living in Oblivion is a boring film. It is about the one hellish day in the life of an independent filmmaker. Steve Buscemi and Catherine Keener give terrible performances. The script is badly written. Tom DiCillo did a horrible job directing this movie. I was not impressed with this motion picture.

shot entirely in a hand-held manner and in black-and-white comes a satire that realistically captures the ups and downs of the process of filmmaking starring Steve Buscemi, Katherine Keener, and Dermony Mulroney the title is both the name of this movie and the actual project being made Buscemi as Nick is trying to get his first movie as a director off the ground but we know like any project there's obstacles in the way so many of them are contractual, financial, emotional etc. Keener is the leading lady Nicole whom Nick has a big affection for but a love triangle ensues between them and Chad played by James Legros everyone knows filming a movie isn't easy as like any job there's good and bad qualities to be had, it's all time sensitive and tensions can arise among the stars as well as the rest of the crew even his mother makes an unexpected contribution to his whole endeavor Nick is in a way 'living in oblivion' trying his hardest to get this film finished, there's only so much a director can handle to go with the flow when it comes to egos conflicting with one another, the level of incompetence and cooperation, as well as budgetary restraints funny, crazy, small but refreshing the movie even asks how certain people got into the filmmaking business or if it's worth it? even the industry itself is mocked at is Hollywood all fluff?, should more films about roughness, grittiness, and violence be more common?, do we only pick the most talented people in the business or is it just for an easy pay day? we can have big success or failure when it comes to getting something off the ground for any aspiring indie filmmakers this is a great example to take notes on how to deal with the stress and anxieties of filming a must watch for anybody that needs a breather from the bigger studio-related projects it's the people behind the cameras that are the true artists

A very enjoyable movie made with Love for the art of Films.

An indie film about the folly of making indie films... It's a really fun spoof that skewers the pretentiousness that can go into these films. And also shines a light on how much of a nightmare it can be putting a film together. It's a small miracle anything gets made.

Meh. Heard this was a really funny movie, so I watched it expecting that. No, a lotta yelling, monotonous scenes done over & over again (ha ha, so 'gut busting'), and one funny scene with Dinklage at the end. Again, meh.

The best comedy movie ever made!

A little cute indi film, about a little cute indi film. Even if I had no idea how a low budged production works, I felt that this might be the way things goes. Moderately funny too.

Living in Oblivion is at times nuanced and has layers of meaning underneath the basic plot. The movie was well-acted and there was some perceptible transformation on the part of the two main characters, yet the overall level of he characters' frustration dominated the film to the point where the ending was distinctly dissatisfying, and the heaviness of their frustration is what lingered for me.

A comedy about the day in the life of a director. Interesting to think about the egos, people, and how to work as a director when there are so many personalities trying to collaborate and make something as complicated as a film happen.
