Locke Reviews

Apr 28, 2025

I don’t care how good Hardy’s acting is. This movie was boring and predictable. Dude abandons his job managing a once in a lifetime MAJOR project and gets fired, shocker. Dudes wife kicks him to the curb after finding out he cheated and knocked another woman up, shocker. Dude flushed his whole life down the drain cuz he has abandonment issues and doesn’t want to repeat his father’s mistake, yawn!

Not much of a story, and nothing really happens.

This was easily the worst movie I’ve ever sat through!

What a bold artistic choice to have one actor in a single setting for the entirety of the film. I can think of no better actor to assume such a role than Tom Hardy. Honestly, as I type this review here in 2025, the only other name that comes to mind that could pull off such a feat is Leonardo Dicaprio. Greats like Robert De Niro and Al Pacino are both in their 80s. Marlon Brando is deceased and Jack Nicholson is retired. Daniel Day-Lewis is actually coming out of retirement, though, he has been retired for some years. Mr. Day-Lewis can do absolutely anything as an actor if he is still at his best. Anyway, I digress. The cinematography is awesome! The shots are so beautiful, again, for a guy driving a car, the cinematographer makes the most of it. I love it when the filmmaker utilizes any and all available tools to assist in the storytelling. Tom Hardy gives such a heartfelt, emotional performance. One of his best, in my opinion. The character he is playing, Ivan, is a loving husband, a loving father, a hard worker and an overall, good man. He made a terrible mistake, but he is accountable. He has good morals and stands to do what is right, even if it costs him his marriage or his job. The writer/director really packed a lot of tension in this situation. A well-written screenplay for certain. Locke is a very good film and I most definitely recommend it. 88/100

Reasonably simplistic in terms of eventfulness through its slated duration headlined by the aesthetically-tuned, naturally lighted immersion, livened by Tom Hardy’s single-handed stellar performance with resonance that captivates per effective enclosure. (B+)

One of the best movies I’ve ever seen by far.

This is a kinda old movie 2014, wow. I didn’t get to watch this earlier. Tom Hardy should be the next Bond.

Tom Hardy might have done some good acting but the film just doesn't do it for me

Not terrible, but certainly not great or interesting. Ending is bad.

Brutally underrated, it's unbelievably good. Tom Hardy is just perfect here.

How is this so great? 'Locke' truly ought not to be as engrossing as it is. I didn't know anything about it (bar the lead) before watching, if at that point you told me the premise and how it plays out I would've guaranteed an utterly boring movie, at best. However, this 2013 release is actually quality. Tom Hardy definitely reaches the upper echelons in any favourite actor discussions, so things with him in are always likely to be a hit with me; eh, well, ignoring 'The Drop' anyway. Hardy is excellent in this, to be able to convey so much within such restraints is very impressive. I watched 'Deserter' before this and noted his iffy French accent, here he has a shot at Welsh... and it's gwych. It somehow adds a dynamic to events onscreen. I shouldn't be surprised at how grand the writing is here given Steven Knight is behind it, I either like or love everything I've seen of that guy's work elsewhere - 'Hummingbird', 'Peaky Blinders', 'Taboo' (really gonna need that season two, chaps...), 'A Christmas Carol'. The guy knows what he does, that's for sure. Oh, and the touch of having known names starring alongside Hardy via voice only is an inspired choice, too. Driving. Birth. Football. Concrete. And yet somehow it's an outstanding picture. How about that?

The perfect cast with a great story. Everyone plays their part really well and Tom Hardy is brilliant as always.

It's amazing how Hardy can keep you interested while being the only character seen in the movie. Loved it.

Deep, existential, thrilling and a capsulation of what it means to be human, to have life, and the consequences that come with it. MAGNIFICENT. The one location genre needs to be studied.

So much can happen over the duration of just one car ride! As Locke attempts to make it to the birth of his child during a one-night stand, he must contend with his business, his marraige and his own insecurities as he makes a long and arduous drive across town. Despite the fact that he is the only character in this movie, Tom Hardy manages to make his flawed character a Shakespearean figure that we can't help but enjoy watching!

A potentially interesting idea executed with the subtlety and nuance of a short story from a Sophomore English textbook.

"Locke" is the testament that Tom Hardy is simply the most charismatic actor of today. He masterfully proves that by literally being the only actor who is on the screen in the whole movie. The film does not have memorable scenes, it does not have action, but Hardy manages to pull this whole drama all by himself. A true masterpiece that very few actors can pull off.

I agree with the top critics. For a film to be set in one place for over an hour would need a top actor, top cinematographer, and top director. I felt it had all three. It starts slow, but steadily, patiently, builds up, as the audience becomes privy to his complicated situation. I was hooked. I was also satisfied with the denouement.

In the moment and palpable with a wholly authentic feel to it, Locke could have utilized the claustrophobia of its location more to its benefit, but it is a riveting and well-paced final product that is blessed with an excpetional script and a truly outstanding performance from Tom Hardy.
