Locke Reviews
By year’s end, this will still be one of the more important films we see all year.
| Original Score: A | Aug 19, 2024
It may sound dull, but it is anything but.

British filmmaker Steven Knight wrote the tough, lean, uncompromising scripts for 'Dirty Pretty Things' and 'Eastern Promises.' Locke is just as uncompromising, but what’s at stake here is the measure of a man faced with a difficult decision

Hardy commands the screen the entire time.
| Original Score: B | Sep 9, 2021
When Hardy's as brilliantly subtle as this, there's no need for hokey drama - here, he makes less mean so, so much more.
| Original Score: 4/5 | Jun 16, 2021
There are heightened emotions throughout, but as high as Hardy soars, the film grounds him with a gimmicky idea that keeps him car bound.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Feb 1, 2021
Too often the experimental nature of the lone locale and its solitary onscreen actor creeps to the forefront, taking the momentum away from Hardy's almost monologic discourse.
| Original Score: 3/10 | Dec 4, 2020
This is a film that needs to be experienced.
| Original Score: 3.5/4.0 | Sep 14, 2020
Writer/director Steven Knight wrests a commendable amount of emotional turmoil from the material, with a strange sort of poetry wrought from cement mix.
| Original Score: 4.5/5 | Aug 26, 2020
Steven Knight's direction and tight script allows Hardy to go through the motions.
| Original Score: 4/5 | Jul 16, 2020
That Locke is much more entertaining than it sounds is a tribute to Knight's skill as a writer and Hardy's handsome, expressive mug.

Sumptuous visuals. Mesmerizing character study in one night of a man's life. Masterful storytelling.

Destination unknown.

Affecting a honeyed Welsh accent, Hardy is superb as a micro-manager trying to keep a lid on the chaos from his dashboard cocoon, while soft-focus orbs of highway lights stream by. It's like a play within a car.
| Aug 8, 2019
It is no surprise Locke won Steven Knight the British Independent Film Award for best screenplay.
| Original Score: 4.5/5 | Jul 31, 2019
A sensational film that demands to be seen, the double act of Knight's dialogue and Hardy's performance creates a taught, riveting thriller.
| Original Score: 4/5 | Jun 8, 2019
It just goes to show with good writing and storytelling anything can be good, even a man driving for 84 minutes.
| Original Score: A | May 2, 2019
Visually, Knight rises to the main challenge the man-in-a-box format presents, keeping the film visually interesting top to bottom.
| Original Score: 8.5/10 | Mar 28, 2019
Fortunately, Knight's steadfast devotion to his film's core conceit pays dramatic dividends from first minute to last.
| Original Score: 4/5 | Mar 20, 2019
It is often that I comment about an actor carrying a film on their shoulders and standing apart from their co-stars. And Hardy certainly does that impeccably.
