Looking Glass Reviews

Apr 14, 2025

Spooky and surreal. You'll feel uncomfortable at times, but to me, original filmmaking.

The suspense and mystery are solid and the focus good, but the ending lacks the necessary twists and surprises to take it to the next level.

Cage earns it 3 stars but it is as bad as the ratings suggest. Superficial is the only way to define it. All the characters and plot superficial, very linear with no sub plots that are explored, camera on Nick Cage all the time the way most of his movies are. A predictible ending, Cage commits multiple felonies then gets in his truck and drives away like they ran out of money and had to end it as if running resolved anything.

Not horrible but not good. Kind of a who cares. You think there will be some sinister reveal that the movie builds to. There is not.

Classic Nicolas Cage's movie. Since 2000 he only makes mindless, weird movies with only reason to make wonderful memes. It's so sad cause Cage was once a good actor

An interesting idea, unfortunately completely ruined by a lousy script and a very mediocre director. When the movie could actually end with a bang and make it worthwhile, it just receices a simple "Plop", which leaves you with the thought: WtF??? For this I had been watching Nicolas and Robin for nearly 2 hours?! Even I could have done a better directing job. 3 1/2 out of 10 points. P.S: When it comes to the actors and their performances Bill Bolender as the ex-owner of the motel is the only one who does a great job, and he only appears for a few minutes. The others are all extremely pale as if they were tired and just wanted to do the minimum to get their paychecks and leave.

This movie doesn't show the symbolic meanings because of the stupid story.

A decent enough mystery flick, unfairly panned, but I see why. Bottom line is it does keep you guessing why all the secrecy in this small town and, we'll most of the mystery coming to light at the end, except for why everyone requests room number 10???. It is rather annoying though how cage just doesn't open his mouth to communicate with ANYBODY the whole time but I'm glad I gave this a try.

Amoooo…

"Looking Glass" is another in a long stream of Nicholas Cage B movies, but this one is weirder than usual. Ray and Maggie (Cage and Robin Tunney) are a married couple taking a geo cure after their young child has died in an accident. They have bought an aging motel in a western desert town. When they arrive to take ownership, the seller has vanished and left them the keys. He has also disconnected his phone and disappeared. So we already have the "creepy motel" scenario, and the other elements pretty much fall into place: contentious locals, strange occurrences, odd people renting rooms, etc. Ray discovers a tunnel in a storage room that leads to a peephole looking into room 10. As he rents the room to couple of people--a trucker who patronizes a string of prostitutes and an S & M lesbian hooker--he can't resist a little voyeurism as his wife sleeps. There's more weirdness: A dead pig shows up in the motel pool. Ray learns that a girl committed suicide in room 10 a few months before he and Maggie took over the place. And the guy across the street in the gas station / convenience store keeps staring at the motel. Further complications include marital strife relating to the death of the couple's kid, and a local cop investigating the girl's death who is suspicious of Ray (and we're suspicious of the cop). Cage is fairly laid back in this film, at least compared to the manic performances he's best known for. He is unsociable and unfriendly to everyone he meets. I guess the idea is to make us suspect that he's hiding something, but he overdoes it. Tunney is believable as his over-emotional, long-suffering wife. The plot affords no clues as it proceeds, and the task of the viewer is to try and put everything together. It's actually pretty interesting, but I'm sorry to report that the "reveal" in the final act is no revelation at all. It didn't even surprise me, and I'm not that good at guessing outcomes. Patrick Cady's camera work is excellent, with evocative camera angles. He also uses bright colors, unlike so many noir projects that employ dim lighting and tinted film. I hate that. Great camera work can't save this film from its predictable ending. Nevertheless, it has some good moments and is worth a watch-----with B movie expectations.

What was Cage and Tunney thinking? Only good part is you see Tunney's boobs in it for a second. All downhill ever after.

Dialogue could have been much better. I saw some repeating, and other flaws in it. The movie was predictable. Antagonists included the cop, the station jerks and tension between Cage and the wife character. I would have written the cop as more central as the antagonist and not made it so obvious he was the bad guy. The second he popped up it was obvious he wasn't what he appeared. I think Cage was intended to draw an audience, but it looked like his heart wasn't in it. I'm surprised they repeated the line at the first coffee pot scene over and over that someone didn't realize how unnatural that sounds and fix it before it went to production. If I sent that screenplay to a competition, they'd chew it up and red mark it to death. That said, writing screenplays is extremely hard to do. Shooting and directing is even harder, so I'm not bashing it. There are far worse movies, but this had the potential to be very thrilling and it fell a little short.

Nothing anywhere near perfect, or even super logical, but I still enjoyed watching 'Looking Glass'. It builds up the tension and darkness well, with the ghost town feel to everything. The cinematography, particularly the lighting, is rather nice. The premise and its execution, while intriguing, does have problems, but the two leads are fun to watch. Nicolas Cage (Ray) and Robin Tunney (Maggie) make for a good pairing, both give satisfactory performances. Marc Blucas is, I thought anyway, pretty decent in his role as Howard; though the writing does let his character down. Other negatives for the film include the average music and crappy opening credits. Overall though, I felt suitably entertained by this.

It's bad. Not 1 star bad, but a solid 2 star bad. The plot is non existent and the ending looks like it was done by a 5 year old with crayons that wrote the end. Cage is good as usual, which gives itv2 stars.

Can’t make up its mind what it wants to be. Coen Bros lite? A gritty desert film like Red Rock West? An exploration of voyeurism like Rear Window? In the end it’s just a muddle of all three. As for Nic Cage: a reserved performance for a change.

May 24, 2020

One of the worst movies I have ever seen. Wooden performance by Cage. Slow, boring and silly.

Tawdry waste of time.

Jan 11, 2019

So predictable, you can guess the killer as soon as they appear. Also the pacing is very slow, yet it difficult to feel any simpathy for the main characters.

Cage walks around the whole movie looking lost and not being able to realise how he’s fallen this far
