Lord of Illusions Reviews

Of the three feature films directed by Clive Barker, this one is my favorite. I highly recommend the Director's Cut.

While lord of illusions is faithful to the short story the last illusion it is unfortunately let down by bad CGI which is a shame because this is a great movie with awesome characters and it definitely one that I will be rewatching quite a few times.

Clive Barker has a distinct way of showing graphic violence in his horror movies. This one is no different. However, the visual effects that are more CGI-based than practically designed appear to be extremely dated. I wish it were all matted visuals or practical effects to give them a more tangible element.

An enjoyable supernatural Noir. Whenever the characters or plot start to get dull, there's usually some striking imagery to distract you.

all style no substance, it really felt like a bunch of random disjointed ideas the director thought would look cool but without any real narrative purpose or connective tissue to make any of the scenes much more than shock factor. Some of the shots were genuinely cool looking, but the storytelling fell short. The dialogue was unimpressive and often felt very stilted and artificial. It almost feels like a story cobbled together from the doodles one would find in the margins of a bored hormone addled highschool aged boy's notebook in a way that makes me feel like I can see the director through the film like the organs of a glass frog in the least flattering way possible. There were also tons of tits for no reason! But hey! Some of the imagery was actually sick as hell it's just a shame it wasn't used with more intention. Worth watching for inspiration if you're someone who likes picking movies apart to analyze what works and what doesn't.

It was ok more like a tv movie. The plot, acting and FX were pretty marginal. Watch if there's absolutely nothing else on.

A lot of critics didn’t know how to handle Clive Barker movies. When top critic who called this one of the worst of the year. Threw in that Clive Barker was a no talent. Which clearly isn’t true watching those movie.

Not my favorite Barker movie, but certainly has it's moments.

Based on the writings of Clive Barker, this film is an interesting mix of a film noir detective story fused with horror. Scott Bakula plays private eye Harry D'Amour who gets involved in a case involving a world reknowned illusionist and a deadly cult. I hadn't watched this in a very long time and forgot how much I love this flick. Have always loved Clive Barker's work and this is one of my favourite adaptations. Kevin J O'Connor and Famke Janssen costar. Dark in tone and plenty of weirdness and gore to enjoy.

Lord of Illusions only makes partial sense, but like the best of 80's Visionary-focused movies (like Legend and Blade Runner), the story really just acts as a means to present the unique vision on display. And boy-oh-boy, does Lord of Illusions possess quite a set of sights to behold! This movie might also be the most thematically dark ultra-visionary film that I've ever seen (at least on this side of 2004's Casshern), which gives the film a sense of urgency and intensity to go with its sudden outbursts of visual creativity. The characters are also a step-up from most in Clive Barker's films; not quite on par with those of Nightbreed or The Undying, but the they're more than serviceable. And the way the film builds its climax is certainly entertaining, featuring a rather powerful central villain. If you love works of Visionary filmmakers, Lord of Illusions is an absolute must-see, and is very likely the best film Clive Barker ever made. As a movie it's not particularly cohesive, but as a work of Artistic Creativity, it's absolute master-class!

Supernatural detective flick with disturbing visuals & an engrossing score attempts a 1940s vibe, but sidelines shadows & mood in favour of a different kind of S&M esthetic. Practical MU & FX succeed where hokey VFX fail. #nitrosMovieChallenge

Loved this film. I went to the premiere of this movie when it first came out and watched it on a large screen and it was magnificent! I recently watched it on my home 온라인카지노추천 (2021) and still loved it. This film just affirmed why Clive Barker is the master of horror. While this film may seem, as some have shared on here, a bit cheesy - it is still a great storyline and stunning imagery with a brilliant soundtrack. Clive's eye for details makes this film a fun watch.

Once you get past the plot holes. Lord if illusions is one of the best horror films of the 90's. It has an all 🌟 cast and great special effects for the time. The director's cut is even better.

Another one of Clive Barker's horror entries mixing sex, blood, and the macabre private eye Harry D'Amour (Scott Bakula) travels to Los Angeles and meets with a new client, Dorothea Swann (Famke Janssen Swann reveals that she and her husband — famed magician Philip Swann (Kevin J. O'Connor) — have been targeted by a religious cult experimenting with reincarnation. After Philip dies on stage in the midst of a dangerous trick, D'Amour must struggle to protect Dorothea from the ruthless cult members and their newly reanimated religious leader, Nix Two realms of magic exist apparently; the one where hell is real and there are demons and the other where real magic is used to cover up the presence of the devil But which is the illusion and which is the reality? Harry digs deeper to find the truth but the results end up being more gruesome Barker delivers the icky makeup effects with lots of blood to spare although some of the visual effects have a lot to be desired The ending is where things get crazy, grisly, and freakishly insane Barker much like HP Lovecraft has a knack for the odd and terror-fueled fear of the unknown Magic is one thing but calling upon the dark forces is another I think this is still a good work of art from Clive Barker even if it falls short of his other successes

Anyone giving this more than two stars must be on crack. OK, that was a bit harsh; maybe just a little too stoned to notice how bad it was or maybe a little too stoned to care. OK, hubby and I actually finished it and we weren't stoned at all. The bad acting and absurdity of it made us laugh so I upped my rating from 1.5 stars to 2.

Solid horror film that while flawed, showed that Clive Barker was a talented director. The cast is solid across the board, with Scott Bakula giving Det. Harry D'Amour the right mix of intelligence and wit, giving pointing jabs that make fun of the situation while getting to the truth of it. Of course, Famke Janssen is an excellent femme fatale with one of her earlier roles. Behind the camera, Clive Barker adapts his original short story expertly, giving a nice mix of horror and detective story (which is much better illustrated in the longer director's cut), though all the pieces don't quite fit together. The main villain, Nix, could have been built up better, along with the larger connection to the world of illusionists and magicians. Overall, still makes for fun horror viewing, along with making you want Barker to give another try at directing.

Slick and special effects driven, Lord of Illusions boasts high production values but lacks dramatic tension. In an apparent attempt to feature as much gore, horror makeup, and video manipulation as possible, the film withholds almost no information from the audience, effectively undermining the mystery and muddling which character is the story's protagonist. In spite of the weak plot, the film's camp villains, intriguing supernatural premise, and well executed effects may salvage its entertainment value for those with a stomach for stylized torture and gore.
