Lords of Dogtown Reviews
Absolutely love this film. Yes it’s not the best film ever made but it’s highly entertaining and the soundtrack is wicked. Always love rewatching this.
This might not hit as deep as the documentary, but it is well acted and has a great score
Lords of Dogtown is a well-edited and refined film that the pioneers of skateboarding and surfing that will resonate deeply with both the skateboarding community and culture, as it delves into its immense popularity, especially in California during the 1970s and continues to be so to this day. The film also boasts solid performances from its lead actors. Grading: A-
It isn't really for older people like me to rate a movie such as this, as it's obviously aimed at the younger generation, and in particular people who are into skateboards not at folks like myself. But anyway. Out of control teenagers surf and skateboard for 102 minutes. A lot of the cast were morally degenerate, which I didn't like. The skateboarding was to a high standard, but they didn't wear protective gear, which I didn't like. There wasn't much of a story other than of people going surfing and skateboarding and being young people, but I suppose that was the story.
Not a bad movie, but not a great one either. If you're into skateboarding this will be right up your alley.
As a rear-view look at the beginning of the new progressive skateboarding style pioneered by a few street rascals from Santa Monica who incorporated their surfing skills into their enthusiasm, it's pretty palatable.
This really makes you wanna go out and skate with your homies
Great movie. Based on a true story. Good peice of history for the kids.
Admittedly not as good as the documentary Dogtown and z boys but if you like the subject matter you'll enjoy the film.
Good acting. Not a fan of the writing
It's got a pretty predictable "rise and fall" biopic kind of storyline. But Catherine Hardwicke directs it with enough flair, making the brilliant choice of a having a grainy and punk rock aesthetic, while casting the perfect kids for their roles. It ends up being a satisfying enough telling of this story. Still, I think the documentary is still probably more interesting...
Chato e entediante...
Its a good movie that I would highly recommend - but I dont think I'd consider it great. It does a wonderful job of re-creating the Santa Monica, CA during the 1970s. Its very cool how they bring back the culture, the mood & vibes, while also explaining why the boys were so influential in the skating community and world. Some of the relationships between the boys honestly don't feel too real. I think the movie kind of rushes some of the main characters' stories and point of views, the movie was just too short - thats the main thing bringing it down in my opinion.
A fun nostalgia ride for me. Lords of Dogtown is pretty carefree, light on disposition, and in the moment. My enjoyment of this movie is captured in being able to live vicariously through the lives of the now legendary lives of early pro skateboarders. It doesn't live up to what it could, but for what it is, it's really tough to criticize it too harshly.
Cool film about some young kids who revolutionised skateboarding. The usual young rebellious scenes you find in these films play out but it's a fun and energetic ride to enjoy.
A visually satisfying film, well edited and accompanied by a great soundtrack, Lords of Dogtown lacks substance, story, and purpose.
The true story of a group of rag tag skateboarders growing up in the seventies. Heath Ledger is memorable as Skip Engblom, the man who puts the team together. Emile Hirsch also gives a fine performance as bad boy boarder Jay Adams.
Borderline masterpiece. Perfectly cast, full of stars and cameos. Great soundtrack and just a beautiflly shot movie. Nealry every frame is a work of art. The colors of the movie are unique and give it a feel all its own. A fast-paced, fun, ride all the way through. It glorifies skating, the wildness of youth and is a perfect artistic tribute to the Lords of Dogtown!
