Lost Girls Reviews
Luz Garbus directed this crime drama, which is based on the book "Lost Girls: An Unsolved American Mystery" by Robert Kolker. The film stars Amy Ryan, Thomasin McKenzie, and Gabriel Byrne. The film was screened at the Sundance Film Festival. It is based on the true story of Shannon Gilbert (1986-2010), a young escort who went missing after placing a protracted call for help to 911. Her mother, Mari Gilbert, who placed her daughter in foster care at the age of 12, is determined to find out what happened to her daughter when police got apathetic with finding her. I learned about Shannon Gilbert while watching several crime documentaries on YouTube, where her voice call was published, in which she is breathing heavily, pleading for help, pounding on the doors of neighbors in a gated neighborhood for help, and repeatedly screaming about some persons attempting to kill her. The film was made in 2020, therefore it closes with unanswered facts about the suspect(s). However, in July 2023, after more than a decade of searching for the infamous Gilgo Beach Killer, Rex Heuermann was apprehended in New York, where he worked as an architect. Amy Ryan delivers an outstanding performance, as does the entire ensemble cast. I stumbled onto the film when looking for Thomasin McKenzie movies. A good treat for those who enjoy criminal investigation films.
Lost Girls - 7.5/10. True crime films/documentaries have covered a lot of subjects. But surprisingly, the case of the Long Island beaches murder cases hasn't been one that has been covered that often. With powerful performances from Amy Ryan, Thomasin McKenzie, and Gabriel Byrne, and Lola Kirke, the movie centers around the story of Marigil Bert and her fight to find her missing daughter. With her pursuit to find her daughter, she ends up bringing attention to other unsolved murders that have happened in the region as well. The film works in a lot of ways in terms of creating a tense atmosphere. The tone makes for a dreary watch, and it follows suit with a lot of true crime related productions. Amy Ryan is one of the most underrated actress in her generation, and she delivers an amazing layered performance as Mari. The grief, anger and determination she shows in her performance helps elevate the film. Overall, a solid, but tough film to watch.
Okay. Rather straight forward storytelling that is let down by it's uneveness despite an excellent performance from Amy Ryan.
Could be better. Still good. Sad movie, but not crying sad, just sad story.
Basic movie but good, went by quick which means it didn’t drag. Based on true story which I always find more intriguing. Unfortunate ending.
The sheer power and timeliness of the subject matter, based on a true story, leads me to give this a lukewarm recommendation despite my reservations. Cinematically, it's nothing more than an extended episode of a LAW AND ORDER or CSI type of show. All of the production elements are 온라인카지노추천-movie level. Ryan is probably one of the best and most underrated actresses working today, but I'm afraid I don't think she was the right choice for this role. She gives it her all, and this is somewhat reminiscent of her Oscar nominated performance in GONE BABY GONE, but she just doesn't feel authentic to me. Despite the incendiary material this movie tackles, I don't feel any passion in the filmmaking. It just feels like a workmanlike, watchable movie that'll keep you interested for a couple hours but you likely won't remember in a week.
I found it unrealistic and obvious acting, in comparison to many other fantastic real life dramas I have watched. However interesting and compelling due to it being a true story.
It took a few months to realize Rex Huermann appears to be the girls' killer. I'm so glad the families can have some closure now. It's sad the mother featured in this film was murdered by her other daughter, who has schizophrenia. In honor of these new findings, I'm going to re-watch this movie tonight, with the knowledge that these cases will be officially solved soon.
Good performances and drama all round. Particularly poignant now they've arrested the suspected killer. Great performance by Amy Ryan as the mother of one of the lost girls
Very interesting movie based off of a true story. In the movie they never caught the serial killer, but it looks like in real life, they are close to it now :) it is a story about how prostitutes are easy victims for murder, and how their murders aren't taken seriously. Most of the prostitutes have problematic relationships with their mother/family, or have mental illnesses.
Viewers didn't realize "Craiglist" were shut down the company after tragedies lost women life many more out there are crime. But killers are not easy to catch until year present,
I normally like Amy Ryan but her performance here is a little grating. Not entirely her fault as it's a pretty lazy script filled with cliche characters and predictable tropes. Additionally, there is no resolution to the story, it just ends with a Lifetime move style inspirational speech. Ironically, the Long Island Serial Killer was identified and charged not terrible long after this movie's release. Maybe we'll now get a good film about these women.
Worst movie. Either she meeds to be found alive or they find the killer. There is no story here.
The acting was the thing that made the movie. It's obviously thrilling that it's a true story but it didn't make it an unforgettable movie. A for the effort though.
A true-crime story about a woman trying to get the police to take her daughter's disappearance seriously. Amy Ryan was solid. The movie was fine, but unremarkable.
A good rendition of a real story about how somewhat good services of 911, police, media and justice, only incidentally not the best they could have been lead to a horror story for parents -of girls at least, just enough for serial killers to thrive.
#4 in Netflix Movies when I watched it (2020-03). A sad story. Reasonably well told.
a pretty good movie with an unsatisfying ending
