Louis C.K.: 2017 Reviews
It will go down as one of the best specials in comedy history.
Not his best special, but he is still one of the best to ever do it. If you are too sensitive to handle comedy that includes provocative topics, you probably should stick to watching nick cannon and pete holmes specials.
Louis CK has always had a great edge but it's always been tempered with wistfulness, whimsy, self-deprecation, and ultimately kindness---this time (for 75% of the show) he isn't just edgy, he's angry and hostile. Unattractively angry. Bitter. Caustic. Hateful. Red-faced ranting contemptuous. He's a guy caught in a traffic jam caused by an accident who gets out of his car and starts yelling what assholes everyone is--and don't they realize how he has someplace important to go?! He's the personification of a permanent creased frown. It's weird to hear him joke about men wanting to ejaculate all over things and have people watch...given that he sort of trapped women in his hotel rooms and asked him to do just that. My dislike of this Netflix show has nothing to do with all that--just that it's pretty weird to hear him making a pejorative joke about (he says) how gross men are in taking every opportunity to "splooge," as he says, on walls etc. Moving on. He is generally enraged--as said, he always has had an edge, but here he is purple-faced about everything. From the use of BC and AD in setting years---railing that it's based on "JESUS!!!" as he roars. If it didn't seem like he wanted to beat everyone to a bloody pulp while he was riffing it would be totally different but it's like he had a hot poker up his ass and his blood pressure is about to make him stroke out on stage--causing him to roar and rant as he did--his only kind words are for Jewish people, who really know what year it is, says Louis CK. Bellowing about killing dogs, acting out giving them heroin. Enraged thinking of himself when he used to care about animals. After 30 minutes he calms down a little bit -- at least he's not vein-pulsingly apoplectic. But 7 minutes later he's a madman on the corner off his meds again. Utterly poisonous. Does a bit about old people walking along together, which is rather sweet for about a minute, and quickly morphs into husband dying and the woman being miserable for 10 years--acts out her croaking. He's so miserable--except around 20 minutes before the end, when he talks about how profoundly bad relationships can become and mishaps of relationship emails if you have friends review then, and how love, he believes, always rots and dies. Tho he does add that love is the only thing worthwhile in life. And then segues into a few other bits that are pretty light-hearted and he's actually smiling, and enjoying himself. Some very funny parts there. In summary, overall Louis CK 2017 really kind of sucks, tho the last 25% is finally quite funny.
Not CKs best work. He's adds too much cringe-worthy material to his sets. I would prefer if he just stuck to being funny instead of trying to disgust people.
"Louis C.K. 2017" finds the legendary comedian in typical form: acerbic and angry but also witty and observant, he continues his streak as the 21st century's best. The material flows flawlessly, seamlessly orchestrated. Strikingly, there's vibrant imagery popping out now and then, as if he is directing a movie right in front of you. And there's even some life wisdom to be found, presented as unpretentiously as possible. "Don't be amazed that a butterfly died 'cause you shot it in the face".
Out of the few specials I've seen from Louis C.K., this one is by far the weakest. I still found it funny overall, but some of the jokes failed to land for me, especially near the end. It's not the first special that'll come to mind when I think of his stand up, but it's still an enjoyable watch.
Im a huge Louis CK fan but this lost me right out of the gate. I feel he wrote it backstage just before coming out. Sorry but I dont understand the great reviews. In fairness, I watched all his prior stuff and this was far from it. I had other expectations.
Louis C.K. always does great work through his stand-ups or television series, so it is natural to go in with high expectations based on previous works. However, this comedy special offers nothing new to the grouchy, yet sympathetic father who takes a lot of time in this hour and fifteen minute special to discuss abortion, religion, why you should commit suicide, and whether or not he would enjoy pleasuring a man. While there are a good amount of laughs, you'll probably start to wonder why can Louis never stop talking about masturbation.
Abortion, suicide, decapitations... right out of the gate. Really not funny... Not sure if I've grown up from his humor, or he's become less funny as he's become more popular. Either way, moving on.
fantastic, as always
a lot funnier than his recent material. still can't touch Chewed Up. Louis C.K. is always funny in some way but this joke set was a lot more consistent.
I'm pretty sure Louis is going through something... This was so dark, not like his usual dark and biting, but whoa dark. He is funny, and there are moments where he's really witty and funny, but it's not his best work.
Really good, not sympathetic to get the humor out, which is great throughout, even when out of sight.
