Love Exposure Reviews
Fastest 4 hours in my life. I didn’t know how time went by. So interesting, but was a bit slow-paced after it hit the 3 hour mark. Covers the major themes we see in most movies. Love, life, faith, lust etc
"Love Exposure" is one of the most strange films I have ever witnessed. It is a 4-hour journey that never goes where I expected it to. The movie is definitely one of the most original stories I have seen and I do think it deserves props for its creativity. It is bizarre and features a variety of genre styles that keep it pretty entertaining. That being said, I do feel this is a movie that feels long, particularly near the end. The movie is split into chapters and I would say it is at its most entertaining in the first half, but I still mostly found something to like in each section. Overall, it is an undeniably strange movie, but it is one that makes an honest effort to be different and is worth experiencing as a result.
MAGNUM OPUS OF SION SONO! The story is so captivating that you're just going to eat it all up and be surprised how quickly four hours can pass you by.
Five stars for the persistence in taking me by surprise
Even in the first part when you feel like trying it off, trust me when I say to keep watching, and you won't be disappointed.
Love Exposure is wonderfully bizarre and quirky. I had no problem sitting through the entire four hours.
chi ha il pane non ha i denti per non amare un film cosi o forse devo dire.....chi ha gli occhi non ha il cervello.
Well... this was a different kind of movie, to say the least. Going into the final act I was not a fan of the film and couldn't for the life of me understand how people could like it, let alone be giving it 4.5* and 5*. But then the last hour of the movie really salvaged it. The upskirt photography, which is required for the plot of Love Exposure is uncomfortable and way too over the top (not at all in a good way)... it's really uncomfy because they're showing girls' panties who look like they're 12-13 years old. How anyone can watch that and think it's nice art is just messed up in my book. I'm sure (or rather I really really hope) all the girls were at least 18 years old and they must be because I can't find any uproar about that issue. Other than that I would classify this as more of a comedic love story than anything else. There are definitely some thrills to be had, and some dramatic moments, as expected in a 4 hour movie. The thing that really boggles my mind is that wiki says the film was originally **6** hours long but had to be cut down to 4 at the producers' request. I don't think any 1 movie can be or should be 6 hours long. Even for Sion Sono - who is the only reason I watched this epic movie.
This is ridiculous stuff! I wonder how come it is regarded as one of the best Japanese films of the 21st century. It might be sheer nonsense on purpose but its hard to sit through the running time just short of 4 hours. The beauty of the whole thing is that nothing makes any sense and it was almost impossible to connect with the characters at any level. Sure it is different, but very hard to digest.
Even though it is long by regular movie goer standards, you will not notice the time while watching it! The plot is complex, but it all comes together. I am not sure this is the best translation of the original Japanese. I would have maybe translated it as "Revealing Love". While religion features prominently in the movie, it is not a religious movie, love in its different forms and its power is the main theme. Happy Watching!
Runs far too long, but the story and characters are interesting enough to keep you engaged throughout. Quite an offbeat, but touching love story.
Super wacky and kinda fun, but mostly just wacky. And surprisingly not boring considering its run-time.
A fascinating battle between God and the Devil arranged over 4 hours of endlessly entertaining scenarios, encompassing erotica, soap opera, comedy, graphic violence, melodrama, mucky jokes and a budgerigar. It's wonderfully mad, beautifully shot, extremely well acted and has an ending that is as warm as toast. Only 4 hours long, cut down from six apparently. Why? Two more hours would have been perfect..
The first half is way better than the second half. Not just as far as pace/editing but as far as storytelling. It's just not as interesting a story as it once was after a while. But, it's a very good movie, and the first 90 minutes in particular is some of the best filmmaking I've seen in a very long time. Definitely check this one out.
Another great film from Sion Sono, after having recently caught Why Don't You Play in Hell? Like that movie, Love Exposure contains so much energy and crazy filmmaking. I cheated a little and watched this in two parts over two nights, but that being said the time length never bothered me, I liked seeing the twists and turns the film was taking me through. So far, I'm really liking Sion Sono's "style." It reminds me of a less focused Tarantino. Can't wait to check out his other films, though some may be a little hard to track down. The young main performers are all great, despite their at times cartoon-y actions and line deliveries, all really seem to capture their characters really well. The movie is also interesting in how it depicts sex and religion.
