Lovelace Reviews

Feb 28, 2025

Linda Lovelace deserved a better telling of her story. Despite an exceptional cast, it's no surprise about the path the film took considering one of the co-directors was named Epstein.

At first it seemed to me like an empty film, wanting to show a porn fairy tale, with some gaps not filled, then, the story is being completed and there is nothing fairy tale about it. It can't be easy being a porn actor or actress, no matter how "hot" a night for two or even the solitude of a Friday night may be, the underground world of the porn industry is far from glamorous. And Linda Lovelace's trajectory could not be different. And whoever is thinking that there will be "putzzaria à la vontê", can take the horse out of the rain, as the entire plot is shown in a light way, but without losing the heavy tone that was Lovelace's life.

A solid biopic, that could of easily gone down the pornographic path given the subject matter but refrained.

This is not a terrible movie, but it's not a good one either. As others have observed, the script was so weak that the actors never had a chance to make it good. But they tried. Amanda Seyfried gave a damn fine performance -- such that the movie was bad in spite of her, not because of her. Still, she should be more selective about the scripts she chooses. This one was just uninspired and unoriginal.

The first half of Lovelace plays itself out in a linear, paint-by-numbers manner as it details the life of Deep Throat actress Linda Lovelace (Amanda Seyfried) from the time she was living under the oppressive rule of her parents until the time she left home with adult entertainment hustler Chuck Traynor (Peter Sarsgaard). Just when it appears that the film is going to stick to the standard biopic formula, events start to pinball around in time, creating a confusion that was probably similar to Lovelace's turbulent life. While the whole thing is a bit of a mixed bag, it is ultimately saved by Seyfried's performance, a raw and gritty portrayal of a strangely iconic performer, a tragic figure whose life was, sadly, defined by a single performance.

Critics have been too hard on "behind the scenes" dramatization of Linda Lovelace's escape and survival story. The acting is exemplary throughout; the entire cast deserves tremendous accolades, but I'll single our Amanda Seyfried as Linda and Sharon Stone as her mother. The script and to some extent the direction prevent this bio pic and examination of 70s porn from being the classic it could have been. While told from Linda's point of view, Lovelace could have been more psychologically probing and less superficial. A great effort though, worth you time, especially if you idolize any celebrity. Their real life may be nothing you'd expect.

I think eeks up to average . Good cast . Seyfreind does a great job . Quite a story. Sad for her

Interesting excerpt from the annals of the American entertainment industry. More of a cautionary tale of abusive relationships than the pitfalls of the adult entertainment industry.

This film wishes it could make a splash in the way that the women at its center did for her own film but falls quite short. Linda brought to the screen something different, something new, something people wanted to see. This by-the-numbers biopic brings none of that and instead falls into the predictable and well-worn track of its genre. The film immerses itself in what has become the typical 70s nostalgic film conventions. ‘far out', ‘you wanna smoke some grass', ‘let's roller-skate to the disco and then drive home in my Cadillac Coupe DeVille etc.. I was simply waiting for a song like "Spirit in the Sky" to start playing and when it actually did it felt strangely out of place. It's the most 70s-ish song of all, but when it is shoehorned into a scene where it doesn't belong it feels wrong no matter how "groovy" everything is on screen. The story here is no doubt a compelling one but it is hampered by a multitude of messy flashbacks and time jump that fail to enlighten the narrative as they intend to. Amanda Seyfried is able to bring the life the character that the screenplay sorely lacks. John Sarsgaard excels at playing detestable human beings and he is great at it here as well.—————- Overall Lovelace(ironically) seems just to squeamish and frightened to take a deeper dive into its subject and is too willing to settle for being just another run of the mill biopic. ————–Highlight: Robert Patrick (who always plays everyone's dad for some reason) is brilliant in his small role, when he tells Linda that he saw her film it is a real sledgehammer moment.

pretty average biofraphy movie...explains what she did andx how it happened to her...learned about abuse by husband Traynor.....Seyfried did an ok to above average job as Lovelace....a sad story about a person who started a 'trend'......

One of the best true-story movies I've seen, but I'm also a sucker for true stories. Amanda Seyfried plays her role extremely well.

Everything was fine for this short biopic except Amanda Seyfried. Nothing against her acting ability , she is very good actress in other movies but really she looks nothing like Linda Lovelace. Because she doesn't look like it I could buy into the movie. I think they should have gone for Brie Larson. She looks much more like her. As for the movie itself, era was really well and the Peter guy who played her husband played it really well. He is a great actor. Everything else was fine if not overly absorbing.

Interesting movie based on life of the adult film actress Linda Lovelace and the controversy surrounding her film "Deep Throat." It outlines how she got into the business and how she was badly mistreated behind the scenes. I found this movie very nostalgic because it takes place during the early 1970s which is when I was in high school, the music, clothing styles and cars hearken back to those days.

I did not know that Lovelace's story, especially her involvement with the classic porn film Deep Throat, was such a tragic story of naivety and abuse. Seyfriend entirely disappears behind her wig and make up here, giving a pretty damn convincing performance. The writing and direction could have been a little more stringent, though, making it a somewhat uneven movie. People hoping for big sex scenes will not get much out of it either.

It is good movie to watch

Can you say made-for-tv? Took it out after 20 mins.

Lovelace captured how cruel and selfish the porn industry can be, and I liked Seyfried's performance, but as a whole it felt a little underwhelming.
