Lovely, Dark, and Deep Reviews

Apr 14, 2025

Lovely, Dark, and Deep (2023) Nightmarish Trip in the Wilderness (11,614 – 14 Apr 2025 – by Claudio Carvalho) The rookie backcountry ranger of Arvores National Park, Lennon (Georgina Campbell), hears the lecture of the chief of the rangers Zhang (Wai Ching Ho). She is the replacement for Barney (Soren Hellerup), a ranger that is missing. She learns that several people and rangers have disappeared in the park, and she goes by helicopter to her station in the wilderness. When she finds a missing woman, the team of rangers rescue her and organize a search party to look for another missing woman, Sara Greenberg (Maria de Sá). Her colleague Jackson (Nick Blood) orders her to stay in the station; however, Lennon disobeys the order and finds Sara. Zhang fires her and says that she must stay in the outpost for four days more. Soon Lennon has a nightmarish trip in the wilderness and learns the secret of the park. “Lovely, Dark, and Deep” (2023) is a strange movie about missing people in the wilderness of the Arvores National Park; The viewer follows the rookie ranger Lennon, who lost her sister in the park when she was young. The plot is intriguing until the moment has a nightmarish trip in the wilderness and learns the silly and unbelievable secret of the park. My vote is three. Very well executed and visually satisfying. The sound design and music are great. I went in with 0 expectations and ended up liking it. If you don't mind an atmospheric slow burn with trippy elements, that leaves a lot of questions open for your own interpretation, you will have a good time. Georgina Campbell's performance is brilliant.

The woods can be a lovely place but it can also be dark and deep Tessa Sutherland presents her first time directorial debut Georgina Gee plays a newly hired park ranger named Lennon In the back country she’s assigned to a district and as she travels through the wilderness something dark and sinister is lurking out there She’s wondering if she’s losing her mind or stumbling onto a mystery involving several missing persons What’s actually out there? The movie ended up being a letdown It wasn’t scary all the way through and it ends up being more on a emotional psychological level Campbell does give a very sympathetic performance though despite not all the answers given and having no real jolts of terror

Lovely, Dark, and Deep follows the path of a new Park Ranger going out for the summer alone in her territory. But, she has something in her past that makes us question her stability. In addition to this, there is something wrong in this forest: people go missing, and they aren't ever found. As the movie progresses, the film starts to slip in its perspective, with reality being twisted, things in the background move, and the main character appears to go deeper into her own mind and break with her reality. This is captured well by the production. The film has a small and slow quality to it that does make it slightly more difficult to feel connected to the character and the plot. But, there is enough there for a watch. The final resolution or twist doesn't do enough for the slower contemplative pace. It makes enough of a plotting that I'm glad I watched it, but overall it's a decent film, not great. Production is high, and the scenery well captured. The forest does almost become its own character.

Lovely, Dark, and Deep is certainly an intriguing movie... I'm still trying to unpack what I saw! Georgina Campbell as Lennon in the lead role was very good. Stunning scenery and cinematography adds to the unsettling atmosphere. This is a really hard movie to recommend... if you are after something brooding and offbeat, you may get something out of it. It really is a movie you may just need to take a chance on... possibly, you'll really get into this movie and want to stay until the end, or you'll give up before the halfway mark... I was in the middle and watched to the end.

Within about 30 minutes, you’ll probably know if this movie is over your head. If you’re the type of viewer who wants labels like “It’s an alien! It takes you to another dimension on its ship!” you’ll probably get why the audience score is so much lower than the professional score. If you get just how ham-fisted and lazy an explanation for everything in a supernatural mystery/horror film can seem, then you might get why so many critics who see exponentially more movies than the average person enjoyed it so much more.

It had potential - and was well acted. But the national parks "taking people" and it being a big park ranger cover-up just kinda got weird.

I honestly dont know what to say. Park ranger who lost her sister and the forest is taking people........back packers etc say 'are you real' like their possesed. The ending is rubbish. Don't watch. Worse film I'm ever watched

Razor-thin plot that’s dull as a butter knife. Lots of shots of trees with spooky music playing. About halfway through, the movie throws everything but the kitchen sink at audiences in an attempt at representing the protagonist’s disorientation, but none of the bizarre occurrences (none of which is truly that bizarre) really register because none are set up in any meaningful way. What would be startling events are instead merely random because there’s no spacing, no setup. Disorientation is fine, as long as it’s not there to compensate for a lack of story. The flashbacks to the protagonist’s childhood are too vague to hold any meaning for viewers and the protagonist herself just isn’t interesting enough for me to care. I thought the lead actress was decent in the role considering it had very little to offer. The movie actually has moments that could serve as interesting plot twists, but the script is so eager to hit readers with another random hallucination that they end up falling flat. Despite the interesting premise it became clear early on that the direction was uninspired when it goes into an extended pan of upside-down forests; the whole upside-down shot has become pretty hackneyed in contemporary horror films. Quite the pedestrian suspense film.

Big disparity between the critic and audience score. Believe me, go with the audience score. This film is not good, to the point it borders on tedious. Honestly, pulling nostril hairs for 90 minutes would be less painful and preferable to having to sit through this again. I’ll give it a generous one star because at least it’s not a sequel or a reboot, but it becomes a complete chore trying to make it to the end. Oh and who on earth thought that Asian lady could act? Wow, she should make a film with Tommy Wiseau. This film thinks it’s something amazing, but the reality is quite the opposite. It’s abysmal.

Decent watch. Pacing is TERRIBLE. There's too many long, drawn out scenes of nothing. No replay value

This intriguing film begins well. The remote, desolate location is beautifully filmed and appropriately mysterious. Plus, Campbell is particularly strong and affecting here as a park ranger searching for answers. However, the film unfortunately lost me during the vague and puzzling nightmare sequence in the last reel. Some critics may have viewed this section as “artistic”, but to me it was simply incomprehensible, and it marred an otherwise compelling effort.

It was okay. Pretty well-acted, but the ending disappointed me.

The case of a new missing girl revives the childhood tragedy of a back-country ranger: the disappearance of her own sister. Motivated by this recent case, she embarks on a dangerous journey through the trails of a haunted forest. "Love, Dark, And Deep" is a piece of contemporary American folk horror that explores the unexplained cases of missing people in the wilderness. The movie leverages one of the most common fears of every human being: the fear of getting lost. Despite its uneven jump scares and inconclusive ending, the movie is effective in delivering a creepy atmosphere.

Absolutely the worst movie I’ve seen ever. The plot was unclear and disjointed. I lost 3.99 on what posed as a horror movie and turned out to be a piece of junk.

this movie was the biggest waste of my life. DO NOT WATCH IT. They just threw a bunch of random stuff in to make it scary with no story line. this movie is a 1/10 don’t waste your time.

Started strong and you can see some skill from the film maker. But, it was a lot of recycled ideas, tossed together in a nonsensical way. Over the top in its way and in the end got absolutely nothing across. I felt like if they controlled themselves a bit with the trippiness and were more targeted. There could have been a great movie. Instead we got whatever this was.

I love the complexity of this movie!!!! The layers are peeled back and peeled back, and the best part is that I have not figured out the ending 30 minutes into the film!! Watched it a second time directly after the first and it was even more satisfying!!!!!! Of course, any film with Georgina Campbell has my vote! True puzzle piece horror!
