Lu Over the Wall Reviews
The greatest 01 hour: and 47 minutes ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This movie is so colorful, and soundtrack was really good! Personally, the art style is so good, it's like a combination of Devilman and Ponyo ahahha. What did concern me was that Lu looks like a little kid, but I've read that the relationship between her and kai is platonic and they're just friends so ig that's fine, besides that this movie is really good. My favorite movie for now.
Negatively impacted by its sins that lowered its rising level because they didn't serve the story besides bringing an abrupt change through the twofold generic narrative structure, but from where it is the so-so by the immediate sounds of it is a dot. This spiritual descendant to "Ponyo" is adorably precious and wonderful with a loving heart over the cuteness, uplifted cheerfulness and soulful innocence connected to meaningful friendship while unpredictable in the inventive animation and the characterization – with its own contagious phenomenon in feeling good spirits while separately laughing and foot-tapping, might rank as an animated favorite for Gene Kelly. (A-)
An enjoyable, unique, and charmingly weird story that's best described as "Footloose, but with mermaids". Fantastic animation is accompanied by an unusual visual style that may or may not be for everyone. The plot may follow the "humans are the real monsters" trope a little too closely, it's still a super enjoyable and charming anime.
With elements of ponyo and song of the sea, one can admire the visually pleasing, original animation style while going through a cute yet hard to follow fantasy rehash.
3/11/2019 This is a beat and color explosion as only Japanese animà (C) can effortlessly pull off. The underlying message of man's constant rocky engagement with nature is very much apparent.
BEAUTIFUL, screw whomever dislikes it. the production is great, love the soundtrack, love the use of colours, and overall i love this and i love everyone. thanks.
This anime movie shows how a 4-years old child mermaid kisses many times a boy who is way older than her, they have a love relationship despite a child age... It is showing Japans misogynist obsession due to fear of adult women and Japanese mens insecurity towards adult women with their own mind. This fear and insecurity leads to sexualization of children in anime which is why child pornography in anime culture is normalized in Japan. Also child rape is actually normalized in Japanese culture when female children are often sold to old men which is also legit in Japan. As a doctorand in Japanese studies, I know the facts about Japan´s misogynist obsession. This information is important to know. It is important to protect female children from the older men who are sexually interested in children and they try to normalized childre abuse.
Anyone who's watched something by Masaaki Yuasa knows to always expect the bizarre and surreal; although you can certainly see his influence, it isn't nearly as apparent as in some of his other work. In the stranger scenes where it IS apparent, it becomes obvious that his particular style doesn't quite fit in with the type of story they were trying to tell here and actually ends up detracting from the better parts. They eat up time that could have been used to make the characters easier to connect to, more relatable and sympathetic; time that could have been used to tell a meaningful story. Instead, it feels incredibly disjointed and makes it difficult for the audience to really connect with anyone or anything. Yes, it does have a few moments where it's touching and gives us glimpses of what could have been, but ultimately, I can't help but feel it was let down by the writing and the constraints of trying to make something that's aimed at a younger audience. Side note: the animation is colourful and lively, but the character and world design is bland and generic, the last thing you expect from Yuasa, so that was an extra layer of disappointment.
A mixture of delightfully refreshing and painfully stale, Lu Over the Wall is a film that shows flashes of greatness but never really comes together as a definitively above-average film. Just like its lead character, Kai, Lu Over the Wall spends a lot of its time going through the motions. While much of this movie is uniquely displayed from a visual standpoint, most of what's being conveyed is an obvious plot-line told through point-blank dialogue & characterizations. Simplicity is sometimes to be expected from cartoons but Lu Over the Wall plays its narrative hand so plainly that it may have its viewers bored before the halfway point. The playful direction and cinematic choices of this movie may help hold the attention of its viewers but, due to Lu Over The Wall's meandering pace, I would not be surprised if some will be eager for the ending. There is beautiful, frightening and humorous imagery in this movie and enough overall quality that I would say the film was an enjoyable experience. But there is also enough fat along the way that I won't be eager to experience it again. In the end, Lu Over the Wall's combination of ancient folklore, modern music and striking images gives it a special feel that is, unfortunately, overshadowed by its limited script. Luckily the theater was empty, so I could stretch out over four seats and take a nap. Poor quality animation, rip-off of Miyazaki;s Ponyo, and plot? Perhaps, but I was asleep. Even though it cost us nothing, thanks to Movie Pass, we left early.
I went and saw this film on a complete whim because it was a new animated movie and it was playing near me and it looked colorful and interesting so I gave it a shot. It sucks. It's awful. It's moronic. It rips off Ponyo shamelessly. It's obnoxious. I hate it. Don't watch it.
