Luck Reviews
The entertaining animated comedy Luck is a G-rated version of Michael Schur’s profound and hilarious The Good Place...
| Original Score: 3/5 | Aug 15, 2022
The enchanting setting becomes a backdrop to action that’s dispiritingly mundane.

Luck feels overthought and overwritten.

There’s much to enjoy – a chase sequence with a lucky black cat is a giddy delight, displaying Jacques Tati levels of audacious inventiveness.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Aug 7, 2022
The bigger problem is there are too many ideas, and fantastical solutions to manufactured problems, most of which feel as if they’re being made up as the movie goes along.

It's fruitless to try to follow the film's line of logic and better to take it on a strictly surface level: Sam is nice. Bob is cute... If you're looking for much more from this mystifying adventure, well, good luck with that.

Luck is like a megamix of several different Pixars (especially Monsters Inc and Inside Out), but with the narrative logic and emotional core removed.

There’s little magic in director Peggy Holmes’ tale of a trip to a magical land.

... A school holiday time-killer full of cartoon leprechauns.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Aug 5, 2022
“Luck” is a somewhat confounding blend of past, present, and future. The confoundedness comes of throwback elements and visionary never quite cohering — that, and an increasingly cluttered plot turning a sweet-natured film into a bit of a slog.
| Original Score: 2/4 | Aug 5, 2022
A movie that feels like a very colorful, moving instruction manual, in which things… just happen.
| Original Score: D+ | Aug 5, 2022
The story gets overly complicated and at times is more video game than story, but Sam’s endearing optimism and kindness and the beautifully imagined different environments and appealing characters keep it from getting bogged down.
| Original Score: B+ | Aug 5, 2022
Luck is a mixed bag. It has lively physical humour and appealing characters... But at 106 minutes, it’s at least 15 minutes too long, with a complicated story that should have been smoothed out in development.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Aug 4, 2022
It’s an engaging concept for a film, and the original screenplay by Kiel Murray shuffles familiar tropes for luck into a novel setting.

“Luck” is an all-out charmer, enchanting us with impressive animation, a pithy and touching screenplay.
| Original Score: 3.5/4 | Aug 4, 2022
Registers as original enough conceptually to maintain one’s interest as we follow the formulaic structure of its screenplay. The resulting fable feels like a typical case of “you’ve definitely seen this before, but not precisely in this manner.”

Everything about this robotically made movie looks derivative and contrived; the videogame aesthetic is dull and the quirky high concept plays like a pound-shop knockoff of Inside Out and Soul.
| Original Score: 2/5 | Aug 3, 2022
“Luck” is a terrible idea for a movie, executed poorly, and by someone who used to know better. The best thing I can say about the finished product is that, unlike most forms of bad luck, this one is wonderfully easy to avoid altogether.

Agreeably wholesome.

While the new studio's debut can't touch Toy Story, it's an auspicious start for a talented group of storytellers.
