A well made film, but unless you already know the story of Congo's independance - probably a confusingmovie to watch ....
Podria haber sido mucho mejor (no pude evitar compararla con la pelicula sobre Malcolm X de Spike Lee). Pero de todas maneras cumple el objetivo de contar la historia de este importante lider africano. I think it could be so much better (I couldn't help to compare it with the film Malcolm X by Spike Lee). Anyway it does a very good job telling the story of this important african leader.
Interesting. This was a great movie and it reveals the big picture and educates people on the issues that led to the problems that many African countries have been facing all this years.
It is hard to rate the depiction of a real tragedy. A story about a world before my time, a prequel to how we live today. The acting was absolutely riveting, very powerful and heart wrenching. A really awe inspiring telling of events. In the tradition of true movie making, filling your head with the story, the time, the feeling. Leaving questions to be asked when you walk away with lessons learnt, never to be forgotten.
Lumumba was a good even great man (much better/greater than Obama, who recently condescendingly lectured Africa to do better, to stop being so corrupt--corrupted by whom?). And the Congo could have been a great country if not for (yes, that's right Obama) Western imperialism/capitalism.
Patrice Lumumba's rise and prompt fall is an important part of modern history that encapsulates many of the ugliest intrigues of early African independence in the 20th Century and the Cold War. This film covers many of those themes, DR Congo's more specific issues, and Lumumba's short prime ministership quite well, but it does not adequately explore his personal life or education in any significant detail.
An informative film but not very skillfully made, and assumes a little bit too much of the viewer in terms of understanding political context.
Helps if you know something about the Congo, its history, and the major players before you see this movie. If you watch it just going in blind, I think there are many things that are not adequately developed or explained. Some things are largely glossed over and/or never addressed. Although it was well acted, I felt very detached from the film, never really engaging with the characters--the potential for this was huge, but never really realized. Still, I think it's a quick and dirty way to get some history. As with anything, however, don't rely solely on this movie for information regarding Lumumba, le Congo, Mobutu, and all else related.
Shame the movie had not explored more of the growth of Lumumba's life towards politics. But his actor does a good job of expressing Lumumba's passion
I thought it was a bit confusing at times but it was an interesting account of a part of history that is basically forgotten. Such a sad story, especially when you look at the state of Congo today and dream of what might have been if Lumumba had been allowed to fulfill his visions.
A little history lesson for you. It's a very Malcom X-esque type movie as the main character is fighting for freedom for his people. Sad and disturbing ending.
