Macbeth Reviews

Through it all Fassbender and Cottilard shine. They both are so keenly in tune with their characters and the unique period dialogue they are given.

| Original Score: 4/5 | Aug 23, 2022

[A] familiar story in a more traditional setting, but still manages to bring forth a new, bolder version of Macbeth that Michael Fassbender does a brilliant job delivering.

| Oct 9, 2021

Even if it stumbles somewhat over its historical appreciation of Shakespeare's drama, this Macbeth, at its best, conveys a genuine sense of the corruption and barbarism of our own times.

| Aug 20, 2020

The atmosphere is otherworldly, a surrealistic fantasy drenched in blood and muck.

| Original Score: B- | Jul 14, 2020

What catches the attention in 'Macbeth' is how it can become extremely theatrical and, at the same time, imposingly cinematic. [Full Review in Spanish]

It's a very well-made movie.

If you like Shakespeare and you're into cinematography, you'll like it.

I am rarely left so disappointed with a movie as when great actors follow an auteur and go rambling off the rails.

| Original Score: D | Oct 17, 2019

Performance, setting, look, and sound successfully come together to generate the drama and monumental scale required of Kurzel to do justice to Shakespeare's work.

| Original Score: 4/5 | May 10, 2019

One cannot fault the outstanding cinematic style of this Macbeth, which succeeds admirably in creating mood.

| Original Score: 4/5 | May 8, 2019

Jacob Koskoff, Michael Lesslie and Todd Louiso have adapted Shakespeare's text intelligently and agree or disagree with their various elisions and interpretations, it is good to see the boldness of their decisions.

| Original Score: 4/5 | Apr 8, 2019

The film's screenwriters... have changed the order of some scenes around yet the narrative flows exceptionally well.

Michael Fassbender is one of the best things about this film. [Full Review in Spanish]

Cotillard just edges Fassbender in this, her Lady Macbeth held up by a skeleton of iron enclosing a broken heart. This is a bloody, brutal and dank film, with freezing beaches and rain drenched moorsand a background song of hauntinglydisruptive violins.

| Original Score: 4/5 | Jan 18, 2019

Fashioning an aesthetic which is both highly stylised and naturalistic, Kurzel crafts a rich banquet of a film (intended!)

| Original Score: 4/5 | Nov 4, 2018

Justin Kurzel's vision of Macbeth certainly makes a bold attempt of truly turning the play into a film.

| Original Score: 8/10 | Nov 1, 2018

Full of sound and fury and signifying something: a stark world whose leaders have visions of demonic witches that spur them on to greater evil.

| Aug 29, 2018

Fassbender has all the makings of a terrific Macbeth - the intensity, the towering melancholy, the warrior attitude and physique - and he duly delivers, as does Cotillard as his partner in medieval crime.

| Aug 23, 2018

Not even the majestic and mesmeric performance of Michael Fassbender can rescue this film from the madness it descends into.

| Aug 22, 2018

An uninteresting and slow-moving film.
