Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome Reviews

Mar 21, 2025

In a sense losing a bit of character because of the less real Aussie involvement, but still brutal, Max developed more depth and the production is surely up a notch. More harsh than before and more challenges. Still directed beautifully

The hollywoody-zation of it's story is definetly inconsistent in it's execution, either ruining or enhancing moments; though, to be honest, i would be lying in saying i didn't have a great time with this movie, and it's bigger budget definitely helped; with great characters, effects and visuals, acting, and eye-catching action scenes alongside world-building that are still some of the best that sci-fi has to offer.

I had a lot of love for the third film. While opinions on the third film are mixed due to its plot, I found Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome to be an exceptional installment. It consistently delivers engaging action sequences with some that are fresh, particularly for fans of motorcycle chasing scenes and the continuous thrill ride that the Road Warrior series promised. Grading: B

The first half of the movie looks and feels like Mad Max at its best, but then the second half rolls around and you wonder who thought that turning it into a children's movie was the right move. It's not just introduction of kid characters, but a complete switch in tone for the franchise, which presumably alienates most adult viewers. Suspension of belief, normally used to justify preposterous vehicle designs, is stretched too thin as the movie determinedly churns out happy endings where there obviously should have been none. Still, the first half of the movie might just make it worth the watch.

Easily the weakest of the franchise despite its iconic titular thunderdome concept. The thunderdome fight and barter town are pretty fun with all of its grungy post-apocalyptic glory, but I was surprised and kind of baffled when the movie took a sharp left turn into Ewok territory when Mad Max visits a weird tribe of plane-obsessed children that make you feel like you’re watching an off-brand Hook. It’s not bad, but it’s so jarring and out-of-left-field for the franchise and eats up a decent amount of screentime. That being said, it still has a cute payoff with their plane ride getaway following a legitimately fun car chase finale. The final shots of them living in the abandoned ruins of Sydney while discussing the mythical legend of Mad Max felt like a nice way to cap off the original Mad Max trilogy despite its bizarre middle chunk departure. It’s not a great installment, but it certainly isn’t bad and I’d argue it earns its countless parodies and homages across pop culture.

Without s doubt the worst of the trilogy!

Filme bacaninha, o roteiro é bacana, o vilão é bacana com o visual horrivel, mas o que torna o filme melhor são as cenas de ação que são bacanas, o filme se passava parecia dentro de uma cupula de um pouco estranho.

Probably the least popular of the franchise, but I still like it a lot. Gibson and Miller are again great in their duties, elevating this to a worthy entry in the Mad Max series. Turner is good too. And who can forget MasterBlaster. Good movie overall.

This franchise had a great opportunity to take the story arc to a new level but instead it dumbs everything down to a very odd, boring one.

Repite la formula de las anteriores, no innova y pierde acción.

It must have been due to the era but these first three movies just keep getting worse and worse.

A big step back from the road warrior. The kids ruined it for me.

The Mad Max movies will always be incredible. And this one sticks to that line. Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome is a great film with great action, story and cinematography. But it's not as good as the other ones.

A great ending to the trilogy.

Silly me thinking it was the Gyro Captain and The feral kid in the beginning. Beyond Thunderdome is quite a step down from the second title, despite its tripled budget. The plot feels significantly underdeveloped, failing to capture the same intensity and coherence. Max's journey to the other side of the world seems aimless and lacks a compelling reason, diminishing the story's impact. The performances from the cast are noticeably weaker, lacking the depth and energy that made the previous films so engaging. Even with a higher budget, the film struggles to match the narrative and emotional resonance of Mad Max 2, leaving it as a disappointing conclusion to the original trilogy.

Absolute brilliant movie. One of my top ten. Has much more depth than the road warrior. All mad max is good.

very well entertaining! the climax gives a gist of what direction George Miller was trying to execute them. Must watch if you love Mad Max for its quirky story telling and characters

Let's be one hundred percent honest, this is not terrible. But unlike how Road Warrior was a step forward, this one is a fair step backwards. The story itself did feel a little sidetracked since it goes from wandering into a utopian city to a messy plotline to Lord of the Flies like to having Max be a second coming of a savior in a cheesy form. The best performance I can give are Mel Gibson, as Max, and Tina Turner, as the villain, the One God rest her soul, while everyone else's performance ranger from decent to forgettable. The best part I'd have to give is the Thunderdome itself as a pop culture reference we still share on rare occasions today. The final chase scene was okay as one of the very few actions we get out of this Mad Max Universal Movie. Even as a casual first-timer, I still enjoyed it, but felt underperforming. 6/10.

Beyond Thunderdome features an appealing setting, with improved world/social structure-building compared to its predecessors. However, the character and story development feel weak. The disjointed second act directly impacts the viewing experience of the third act, significantly diminishing the overall effect.

The story was lacking. The first three quarters of the movie was slow. The kids made it feel like a Peter Pan movie, but not in a good way. And, I'm sorry, but the chase scene was boring.
