Magnum Force Reviews

Rarely is a sequel as good as the first but Magnum Force is a great movie!

My favorite Dirty Harry movie. As we find out that even Dirty Harry has limits on how far he'll go in dishing out justice.

Mildly entertaining, and totally predictable. Harry really isn't "dirty" in this movie, either.

Best Dirty Harry movie by far.

Clint Eastwood delivers justice to rogue cops with powerful bullets. Director Ted Post's action thriller Magnum Force (1973) keeps Clint Eastwood cool and ready to gun down crooks at a moment's notice. This time, Dirty Harry is feeling conflicted about having to shoot rogue cops taking the law into their own hands, but not for long. Harry rages into full force with fiery shots from his powerful magnum revolver that are electric with each gunshot. The sound design team let the gunshot noises burst loudly, whether it's a revolver or machine gun. Ted Post's direction keeps you engaged as Eastwood investigates and guns down crooks getting away with a crime, even if they are cops this time. The shootouts are so exciting and Magnum Force is nearly as awesome as Dirty Harry. Editor Ferris Webster's sharp cuts keep Magnum Force's pace quick and each action sequence gripping. You are always anticipating Clint firing again. Cinematographer Frank Stanley's smooth camera panning left and right during shootouts is so cool. I love the way he'll get a neat perspective of Harry overlooking bodies or criminals with wild angles. Jack T. Collis' art direction is gritty and raw like John Lamphear's set decoration, stuffing sets with goods in stores and diners. Sass Bedig's explosive special effects and gunshot flares look real and exhilarating. The massive stunt team pulled off fight after fight and shootout after shootout. The pool machine gun massacre is insane. Writers John Milius and Michael Cimino's story is pretty engaging as they continue to think about ethics, justice, and guilt for law officers and murderers. Having Harry's fellow police officers be the violent crooks committing mass murder in the name of vigilante justice is a neat twist on Dirty Harry's rampage. It's fascinating how these movies are all about legal rights versus vigilante justice dealt with a handgun. The action is searing and cool, but you do wonder why Harry should get away with mass murder every time. It makes for an entertaining film for sure. All the firearms details show off Harry's gun knowledge and expertise. Clint Eastwood is fantastic as the cool, clever, and violent Inspector Dirty Harry Callahan. His reserved acting feels mature and subtle, giving Clint a glare of the eyes or a silver-tongued jab at foes with ease. He's as tough as he is funny or trigger happy here. Hal Holbrook is very fun as Harry's foil the good Lieutenant Neil Briggs. David Soul's Officer John Davis, Tim Matheson's Officer Phil Sweet, Kip Niven's Officer Red Astrachan, and Robert Urich's Officer Mike Grimes are great as the supporting cop actors. I loved Christine White's sweet Carol McCoy. I liked her charming scenes with Clint. Composer Lalo Schifrin's killer funky jazz music sets a mad atmosphere for Magnum Force. Lalo's film scores for this series just rule. Makeup artist Joe McKinney makes everyone look rugged and a young Clint even more handsome. Hairstyling from Shirley Dolle gives Eastwood massive 70's hair as usual. I like all of Eastwood's fancy suits to portray Dirty Harry as a man who likes his expensive fashion. In all, Magnum Force is a thrilling 124 minutes of gunshots galore.

Not as good as the original but still great.

This one I like a little better, but Dirty Harry it seems is not my cup'o tea.

50% rating ... Average film. You might like it if you enjoyed Clint Eastwood's Dirty Harry character.

"This is a 44. Magnum, the most powerful handgun in the world, and it could blow your head clean off. Do you feel lucky?" Clint Eastwood is back as Dirty Harry in Magnum Force and this time he's here to catch another mysterious killer who is an vigilante cop who kills people. That's kind of the same thing to the first film. However I have nothing about it because it's the same thing like I said. Magnum Force is a superior one out of all of them. Great sequel to Dirty Harry.

An Action Movie Classic. The music is solid, the acting is really good across the board with a solid gang of memorable villains. The cinematography is filled with really good action scenes, great camerawork, memorable locations, and memorable scenes. The pacing is really good as well and ramps up really well the last 20 minutes after being solid the whole way. The only weakness is really the editing is a decent but very jumpy in the first half but makes up for it in the second. The crimes being committed jump around and feel random although there well done scenes and do eventually link back well to the plot it definitely could have been weaved together a bit less choppy. It can also have trouble in the first half weaving his personal life with the crimes as well which contributes to the jumpiness and pacing (still good in the first half) being weighed down. It still works in the grand scheme and I'm not sure how you would fix that. This has great underlying commentary about vigilantism and builds on the rouge cop issues of the first one on top of expanding Harry's personal side. If that would've been fixed this would be as good if not better than the first one but as it stands this is a great time for any action fan or any fan of any actors in this.

Good sequel and worth the watch if you like the original

Dirty Harry is back despite no explanation to why after he threw his badge away, in the first one. The villains are cops more dirty than Harry himself, well according to him. He is a bit of a vigilante himself.

Classic Clint. ..........

This is a typically stylish and tense/gripping Harry Callaghan film. Its relatively slow, plot pace and action wise, compared to modern day action crime films but its certainly not bad. It focusses, as ever, on the grittier aspects of city life - pimps, dodgy officials etc. The violence is quite bloody, of course. The background, incidental music is quite good at adding to the tension. I particularly enjoyed a scene with Harry holding on to a car bonnet for grim life. There are decent car chase scenes and a good bike chase scene as well. I thought this was quite a gripping film and so I would definitely recommend it.

Magnum Force is just a simple cop movie. What I really like about a lot of films from this era is that they just get straight into things. No big preambles. They just set up the problem and let the protagonist do their thing. A solid follow-up to Dirty Harry.

It has a compelling set-up but ultimately it feels unnecessary as it seems to only exist to "clarify" the politics of Harry Callahan, which were obvious to anyone paying attention of the original film.

A strong follow-up to 'Dirty Harry'. I feel as positively about this as I do about that 1971 original. I don't think they set the world alight per se, but they are unquestionably entertaining and have a strong vibe about them. Clint Eastwood is terrific, while the support cast - though not on the aforementioned's level - are solid. Good story, well paced... I like it.

Efficient action sequel to the terrific Dirty Harry. This is the one with the five rookie traffic cops deciding to administer vigilante justice on the hoodlums and pimps who seem to have escaped the law. It's up to lone maverick Harry Callahan to pin down the perpetrators and drive fast cars. Ted Post directs anonymously, Lalo Schifrin contributes another jazzy score, and the great Hal Holbrook plays Harry's boss and scourge. Very early seventies, quite graphic for its day.

Always recommend an Eastwood classic.
