Malcolm & Marie Reviews
The intricacies of their relationship are quite compelling. My perspective has shifted between her standpoint and his, ultimately returning to hers. However, the essential truth is that both individuals exhibit human flaws and may genuinely have affection for each other. While this situation may have been overwhelming for a single evening, I believe it represents a culmination of numerous arguments and unresolved resentments that have converged into one night. Both performances are great, but Zendaya’s is exceptional
The movie tells the courage to show your vulnerability to the one you love while you wait and watch what they make out of it, will they use it against you, will they embrace you for it or pity you. It also show how deep simple communications and empathy plays in relationship. This is just real life situation of partners living with fears of being replaceable by the one they love.
As amazing as David Washington is in this.. Zendaya ups him due to her authenticity ";b". Both of them are key in this, and this is the first movie I've seen Washington be an Oscar worthy performer. It's a movie that is similar to a broadway show. A focus on two performers in one location in an engaging, heated conversation, and relationship. Their conversations, thanks to the script, is very interesting. Conversations about the industry, critics, society, and so on. It's the best podcast of all time. And it's very sexy, which is very refreshing in an age were sexy is ostracised. Also directed brilliantly by Sam Levinson... Thank you!!
Brilliant acting, brilliant cinematography, brilliant set, brilliant soundtrack. Perfectly captured intense, complicated passion.
This the movie illustrates Zendaya’s bad acting along with Challengers. She showed no emotion range. Only showed a sad face like when they are teaching a 5 years old how to act sad. No tears, no feelings, nothing in her acting was good.
Amazing acting I was sock why she didn’t get an Oscar but I get it that not even a real movie like she said so.
filme mais ou menos, atuações do dois pode ser boas, mas o roteiro é meio fraco, aquele negócio de focar mais no trabalho do que na mulher, e brigas por coisas que elas fala e mais brigas, até se reconciliarem no final.
Directed by Euphoria's Sam Levinson, 'Malcolm & Marie' is a compelling drama set against a gorgeous black and white world. Both Zendaya and John David Washington deliver career-defining performances as a filmmaker and his girlfriend in this sensational two-hander. Set within the walls of a contemporary home, 'Malcolm & Marie' is about a filmmaker (John David Washington) and his girlfriend (Zendaya) who fall into a night of love and vexation after returning from Malcolm's movie premiere. Malcolm realises something is wrong as Marie silently prepares some Mac and Cheese and warns him "Nothing productive will be said tonight", as Malcolm pushes her to tell him what's bothering her. Marie comes clean, asking Malcolm why he didn't thank her in his speech at the premiere. Malcolm claims her forgot, but that's just the tip of the iceberg for the pair. Revelations about the couple's relationship begin to surface and their love put to the test. Zendaya and Washington both deliver the performance of their careers over the 106 minutes. The chemistry between the two is outstanding and they appear incredibly connected to viewers even while screaming across at each other. The 12-year age gap between Zendaya and Washington may concern some viewers, but they'll see those 12 years cause no problems with them on-screen. The fact that there are only two cast members gives 'Malcolm & Marie' a sense of containment and calm that pulls viewers even closer into their relationship and what's being said on screen really stays with viewers. Shot in black and white and on 35mm film, 'Malcolm & Marie' is a film that completely captivates it's viewers and makes them feel like they're in the scene with Malcolm and Marie. The camera work throughout is stunning and adds to the sense of tranquillity the film gives off. Caterpillar House in Carmel, California is the perfect setting for 'Malcolm & Marie' it's the modern, contemporary setting the film needed. Levinson reunites with British artist Labrinth to create a sensational score for the film. The pair had previously worked together on HBO's 'Euphoria' which Zendaya starred in the leading role. As well as directing, Sam Levinson writes the script, which is a war of words with love and intimacy weaved throughout. The film explores many emotionally heavy themes. It explores how love is shown between two people who are in a relationship with each other. The support and strength needed to be in a relationship with someone is also shown through the character's various monologues. The quote 'It's not until you're about to lose someone that you finally pay attention' show how, when you're with someone, you can actually start to take advantage of having them in your life. It's one of the many things 'Malcolm & Marie' tries to get across to its viewers - cherish the people you have in your life because one day they might not be there. Malcolm makes the point that whenever a film has majority/entirely POC cast, it's overlooked and simply seen as the director trying to make a political statement when it might not be. He expresses his annoyance of this when he recalls his conversation with a film critic, in which he states 'Just because the film doesn't star anybody that looks like her doesn't mean it's political '. 'Malcolm & Marie' isn't just a cinematic masterpiece, it's a film that explores various themes and ideas in such a simple way. Beautifully shot, superbly acted, 'Malcolm & Marie' is a great film for many reasons, whether it be the superb job Levinson does in the director's chair, or the Oscar-worthy performances the cast gives. Viewers that enjoy a more active, high-octane film may find 'Malcolm & Marie' isn't a film for them, but fans of Levinson will see how the film resonates with some of his previous work, including the 2019 series 'Euphoria'. So, if you're a sucker for a domestic drama, this is definitely the film for you, but given the thousands of projects Netflix has to offer, don't be disheartened if it isn't.
It's distressing, problematic, it's AMAZING! It's ART.
Not a lot happens, and I am riveted every moment with these great performances and smart script.
Great movie. But I get why people don't like it, it feels like you part of the argument which makes it so realistic l. I love it
brilliant cinematography and performances from the leads. the script really holds this movie back, but it has its moments. also, cutting twenty minutes wouldn't have hurt either.
This movie is very slow. I didn't connect with the characters and really didn't learn anything new. Both characters were hitting below the belt. I can't say I felt bad for any of them. Malcolm was an ass and Marie was a drug addict with drug adict tendencies.
This movie only gets the 3 stars I've given it due to strong lead performances and a unique style of presenting the story (camera work, black and white theme, etc).
Although the setting Is somewhat claustrophobic and the story hard to follow. John David Washington and Zendaya have amazing performances that make this film totally worth the watch. And if you consider that this film was made in the heart of the pandemic then I'm much more forgiving to the flaws of the film. Definitely recommend.
How did this not win a bunch of awards. Didn't know what I was going to watch. Ended up being great! Made me cry. Relationship wise- I related to the female character. They were both perfect!! This deserves 5 stars..
As "Malcolm & Marie" (2021 release; 106 min.) opens, the couple arrives home late at night, after Malcolm's latest film has premiered to apparently great buzz. Malcolm is putting on some great music, while Marie starts preparing some mac and cheese. As the conversation turns, we learn that Marie is quite upset with Malcolm as he failed to thank her in his post-movie's speech, despite the film being inspired by her drug addiction in a prior life. It marks the start of a looooong evening... Couple of comments: this is the latest project from Sam Levinson, best known for the HBO 온라인카지노추천 series "Euphoria", starring Zendaya. When "Euphoria" shut down production due to COVID-19, he pitched some ideas for a feature film to Zendaya, who eagerly accepted this particular idea. John David Washington equally jumped on it. It all sounded so promising, and when I saw the film's trailer recently, I couldn't wait to see this. Alas, something doesn't quite add up. The biggest shortcoming is without a doubt the script. It's just not equipped to provide 1 hr. and 45 min. of in-depth characters. To be clear: there are only 2 characters in the film. The trajectory of the characters is too obvious: from hot to cold, to hot again, and then to cold again, and at some point you just want to yell "enough already!". Check out the long monologue that Malcolm gives upon reading the LA Times review of his new film "by that white chick". I mean, even John David Washington collapses in the film at the end of that rant from sheer exhaustion! But then there are scenes that are very powerful. So in the end it's a bit of a mixed bag, and frankly this feels like a missed opportunity. Please note that the film is shot in B&W, and features an outstanding soundtrack with choice cuts from James Brown, Outcast, and many others. It is also noteworthy that this is touted as the first Hollywood film produced and shot entirely during the COVID-19 pandemic, adhering fully to the COVID restrictions during the movie's production. "Malcolm & Marie" was self-financed by Sam Levison and his wife (with a minuscule $2.5 million production budget), and then Netflix snapped it up for an eye-popping $30 million. The film was released for a limited theatrical run this past weekend, before then moving on to Netflix in the near future. Meanwhile if you are interested in a relationship drama or are simply a fan of Zendaya or John David Washington, I'd readily suggest you check this out.
Been trying to finish watching it for a month or so but the storyline is boring and the movie has no climax. Finally got it down to about 40 minutes left but I can't finish it. Wouldn't recommend.
I love the concept of the movie, it's very thoughtful and enjoyable. It's a movie. It's a movie I will refer to my friends...Incase you haven't seen it you can watch it here.. https://tinyurl.com/5xnyw5hp
A film that is essentially a feature-length falling out between the titular characters, Malcolm & Marie is paced with peaks and valleys; the two enjoy small quiet moments together as well as full blown knock down, drag out verbal altercations that rise and fall throughout the movie that leaves viewers tired and on the ropes. The main issue with the film is the fact that after the first half hour, those peaks and valleys start looking increasingly similar; one snide remark, one dagger and yet again our characters are off to the races. The fact that Malcolm is so clearly bent on winning the arguments instead of listening to what Marie has to say reveals more about this poisonous relationship than the arguments themselves. To compare this movie to a boxing match isn't farfetched; the blows, dodges, counterpunches, and parries mimic that of two heavyweights duking it out during a 12 round match. Unfortunately, all that bluster in the script leaves very little room for the progression of a story or character development: by the final moments playing over the credits, viewers are left with the sense that all ended where it began, with our characters changed little for the better. The main strength in this movie is the acting tour-de-force, presented in full display by both Zendaya and Washington. Frustration, anger, resentment, genuine love, and disgust are a revolving door of emotions as the couple continue to tear into and tear down each other during its 106 minute runtime. Whereas Washington is all emotions on the surface, bitter anger and pettiness (along with a number of explosive monologues), it's Zendaya's slow builds from cold fury to outright explosion that propels the story from one verbal spat to the next, stopping only to give viewers some momentary respite and allow them to reset before the next round. The fact that the movie is equal parts fascinating and frustrating while being handled entirely by two people is a testament to the acumen of both actors. This isn't a movie where you root for the characters to succeed, it's a movie where you root for them to both seek therapy and anger management classes, and that's largely due in part to how Zendaya and Washington approach each other and the material. From a writing perspective, Levinson starts off strong, giving each character a distinct voice and personality before ultimately delving into thinly veiled caricatures: Malcom becoming the voice of Levinson's frustration with film critics while Marie at times plays ‘what if' devil's advocate for those who'd rebuke Levinson's complaints. Directing wise, he does a competent job, using the camera to invade the personal space of both characters while at times pulling back far enough to leave them alone with their emotions. The grainy picture combined with the austere set design lends a visual that is at times more interesting in the background than the actions happening in the foreground. An emotional look into the nature of destructive people, toxic relationships, ego, and suffering, Malcolm & Marie is a hard watch due to the constant antagonizing nature of the characters and due to it's interesting premise stretched thin. This movie would work excellently as a short film, but as a feature length film (much like the characters portrayed within), it hits hard in the beginning and fizzles out towards the end. Commendations must be given for a project whipped together from scratch in a handful of weeks and produced during the middle of a pandemic, but ultimately the film lacks any substantive material beyond an acting showcase.
