Malignant Reviews

How has it took me so long to see this, only bought it because it was on sale in HMV.. Watch an absolute belting film, could go down as a cult classic. Gabriel is such a great character

It didn't have the most sound plot, but it was really entertaining to watch and had some really cool scenes. I definitely recommend it for horror fans!

A great production with good enough acting and very good makeup design. Those are the highlights. The story while interesting isn’t very mysterious, the clues are in your face and the movie doesn’t shy away from them. It still can be nice to keep invested in the story but you can’t count on the mystery aspect of it. Also, the third act is a mess, and the ending is just abrupt and unfulfilling.

This film seemed to be a somewhat meandering puzzle until the third act finally arrives with a jolt, justifying the part of your life lost enduring the underwhelming first hour. So whatever you do, don't miss the last thirty minutes here, which are quite something...

The Movie was so bad on so many levels. I can't believe how bad it was. Can't believe people actually liked it. Terrible

Absolutely bonkers in the best way, over-the-top & wickedly gory, James Wan's homage to 70s & 80s horror slashers & giallo films is a ridiculously good time!

When boldness takes over, you can throw together everything you find cool and mix it up, but most of the time, it results in something as absurd as this. Even for those of us who enjoy B-horror, it feels downright disgusting

It's a bunch of caca!

You have to see the whole thing to understand it but it's not James Waans best

Malignant seems to have a very divisive effect on people - and I sit solidly in the camp that absolutely loves it. I went in with no exceptions or previous knowledge of the plot at all, except a promise of a wild twist, and came out delighted by the tonal shift that the twist comes with. The movie clearly plays with the viewer's expectations, and completes a pretty impressive series of 4-6 moments within a scene where what you expect DOESN'T happen. The times when it plays the expectations straight also works wonderfully. I have also never loved a horror movie villain so much! Usually once the monster or villain is revealed, I just stop being scared and ride out the last act a little disappointed. This time, the reveal got me pumped, however, and I couldn't get enough! Sure, it stopped being scary, but I was instead very invested in it. Exceptional and at times silly stuntwork and body doubling, the story keeps you guessing, gorgeous effects, suspenseful yet funny - this movie has everything. At the same time I do get why someone else might hate it. The tonal shift might disappoint, the action might seem too goofy, the unmet or subverted expectations unsatisfactory, the humour/camp ruin the vibe. Really really depends on the person! But I'm not going to ratw it lower because I understand why someone else might like it!

The first half is a full blown American Giallo; the second says "f*ck it all" and throws everything on the fan; one of the most unique horror movies i ever saw. Also features very nice, Cronenberg-esque imagery and effects.

It's pretty cool, the plot of "parasitic twin" is a new twist, far away from most horror movies which is great, could be a pt2, to show more about the hidden twin. Postscript, Gabriel's kinda a hear me out, I see potential lol

It keeps you thinking what's going on for a big part of the movie. I loved the reveal. Even though this magic is gone after the first watch, I still enjoy the weird dialogues, over-reactive characters, and exagerated fight scenes.

I was told to watch Malignant without looking up anything about the story, so I didn’t. However, even then, this movie is far from what I expected. I had a difficult time adjusting to the tone, which I realized (about halfway through) was intentionally campy. While the story and the dialogue are cheesy, the actors are playing it completely serious. James Wan does a fantastic job with the visuals, though. Each scene creates an atmosphere of horror with its sets, lighting, and camera work. I liked Malignant, but I didn’t love it. However, I am willing to give this film another watch in the future.

Malignant might be overflowing with story elements, but it almost never lets you know it. This is one of those films that's best seen as a fun watch on a Saturday night and boy did it succeed at that. It has a certain wacky style that keeps you invested in a plot that's almost impossible to guess the ending from the start. Despite the questions it leaves, Malignant will leave you feeling satisfied nevertheless.

Malignant - 3.5/10. Saw, Insidious, and The Conjuring. All films by James Wan, a modern day titan of the horror genre. All of these films helped cement his legacy as a great horror director. However, his latest offering, Malignant, is a horrible original film. And its sad to say, but it seems like Wan has lost his touch with the genre. Though a noble initiative to try something new, Malignant is just a bizarre and annoyingly acted film which will drive you to roll your eyes and grin at the cheesy dialogue delivery. Its definitely a polarizing film, but its one that didn't work for me on many levels. Annabelle Wallis is a good actress and has done decent work in her career. Though, her performance along with everyone else's in this project makes you think that they were told to ham it up or to purposely over react. Its so strange, from the first scene till the end it feels like everything is so over the top. The only saving grace for the film is Wan's ability to create a good atmosphere and visuals. Thats honestly all the good things I could say about this film. The twist is okay but nothing that could have saved this film. A total disappointment.
